“Some people like to moan...”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

We have been reading some of the negative reviews and don’t know what everyone is talking about. We can only rave about the place. The food was excellent, the staff were so friendly, and the entertainment team knock themselves out to make sure guests have a good time. We went at the beginning of July and met with a family who go there regularly. We also met a really discerning couple from NI who, like us, were hard pressed to find anything to complain about. We had no water one morning, but it was sorted in no time; it was hard to get through to reception on the phone at times, and we did find one of the waiting staff in one of the ‘quality restaurants’ rather offhand, but we didn’t let it bother us. What can I say...some people just don’t seem to be happy unless they have something to moan about. PS Keston rocks!

Had a fantastic time at RIU. Two of my best friends were married, we took in some local stores and even got some diving in. The staff was fantastic and if you got to know them they would bend over backwards and get you anything. The restaurants are fantastic as well, but don't forget to make reservations ahead of time they will fill up quick. Only two issues I had were the air conditioning wasn't the best but kept the room comfortable enough to sleep. Theotherwas the elevator in the deluxe wing kept breaking down, once with me in it. Don't forget to take cash with you because even though you won't need cash, if you tip your staff just about every where you get remembered, $1-2 is all it takes sometimes.

Me and my Husband stayed here on our honeymoon, we were very Impressed! The service and entertainment was amazing! The resort itself is beautiful and right on the beach. The rooms were average nothing to special, but they were kept very clean by the staff! We didn't feel comfortable going out in town, but not to worry the resort brings in local vendors and there is an area of the resort that Becomes a little market. The food was again average( as far as the buffet went) however make dinner reservations for
The good stuff! The night life is great and this was the perfect place to meet couples, hang out and
Enjoy our vacation! We loved the Riu and would recommend this resort

My best friend I and both turned 40 this year and decided to do a girls trip. We booked through Cheap Caribbean and got a killer deal. The transportation we booked was easy to find in the airport. The air conditioned bus was comfortable and the driver was entertaining. This hotel is about an hour and a half away from the airport. Not a big deal to us as we were taking in the sites along the way. I'll just list pros and cons.

PROS:
-The grounds and hotel are gorgeous.
-Rooms are very nice. Contrary to lots of reviews, we experienced no smell at all.
-Pools are clean. The smaller pool was loud but the larger pool was always more quiet and never crowded.
-Beach was large and gorgeous. There was always plenty of chairs, shade and room as to not be on top of other people. Contrary to some reviews, we did not see any seaweed on the beach or in the water. Yes, there is some seaweed on the ocean floor but that is to be expected.
-The food was very good. We ate at the steakhouse and the Asian restaurants and they were both very good. We also ate at both buffets and there was always a HUGE selection that had something for everyone.
-The bartenders were excellent! Always smiling and really looking like they loved their jobs. We tipped because they absolutely deserved it.
-The entertainment was top notch, especially in the evenings. They did everything from shows to drinking games and it was always a BLAST. The entertainers also mingled all day long and really made the guests feel special.
-Dunns River. This is an extra excursion that you will have to pay for but it's totally worth it. It's a really cool experience.

CONS:
-Front desk staff was awful with the exception of maybe one or 2 people throughout our stay. To me this is unacceptable as they are the first person you deal with. They acted like they didn't care one bit about their jobs. Totally not ok.
-The drinks are obviously completely watered down. I drank at least 6 pina coladas and was still completely sober. That shouldn't be possible. Ask for an extra shot in every drink if you're looking to really loosen up.
-Put any valuables in your safe or security will do it for you. We had been leaving our cell phones and cameras out when housekeeping came (maybe not a smart idea) and when we returned later there was a note that said security had placed the items in the safe and taken the key. We had to call security to come unlock the safe to get our belongings. I thought this was a little over the top but understand that it was done to protect the housekeeper.
-Peddlers. The resort owns the beach that the hotel is on so they can't bother you on the beach but the peddlers arrive by boat and snorkel up in the water to harass you. They are selling anything from shells to necklaces to illegal substances. The resort does have security that does a very good job keeping these guys away but it does happen and they are relentless.

Overall, our experience at this resort was awesome and I cannot wait to return to Jamaica.

Room Tip: Rooms in the 'I' block are best. They are centrally located with great views.

Four of us arrived for 5 nights on Sunday, 9/16 to celebrate anniversary’s.

Transportation
Shuttle from MBJ to Ocho Rios was about 1.5 hours with shared transportation. Mini-bus a/c worked well and the drive went smooth. For our excursions, we hired a local JUTA licensed driver for the day and negotiated a rate at least 60% below the posted rates. We went shopping (prepared to be haggled), to Dunn’s River falls (nice couple hours), and to the Rain Forest; plus received a narrated tour of the villages and Jamaican lifestyles: All in total about 7 hours. The shuttle drivers expected tips when handling luggage ($1/bag), and were bold enough to ask some travelers. The tour guide at Dunn’s River even went to the parking lot looking for tips from tourists of the falls. There is nothing within walking distance of the resort if you want to leave the property. The falls/city are 3-5 miles away.

Check-in and Room
Check-in (deluxe wing) was a breeze. Front desk was wonderful and always smiling and willing to help if needed. At sign-in, had to agree to a $250 lost bracelet charge, a $25 lost towel fee, a $20 if room access card was lost, plus a $75 Safe Key replacement charge. Fortunately, no problems for any of us. OVJR Suite was nice; typical of AI resorts (maybe a bit small). Balcony view was nice, high floor could see ocean. OFJR Suite had about same views and was NOT OF; on an angle OV; but a bit nicer (same size room). Rooms were clean and no sign of bugs. We stayed on the 3rd floor. Elevators were in good location and were in operation. Mini-bar was restocked every other day; bed made daily. Left a few bucks each day for the chamber-maid. A/C would only work with door wall closed. Jacuzzi tub big enough for one; no problems with hot water. No clocks or radios in the rooms.

Food and Beverage
I suggest you make dinner reservations on the day of arrival, or as early as possible. Two specialty restaurants for "wing guests only" also served other non-wing guests (not sure why). The food was tasty in these restaurants, don't go late or you will lose your reservation (<15 min maybe OK). The Japanese restaurant sushi appetizer was delicious; main course was not so Japanese. The Steak House was very good, tender and juicy with firm vegetables. The Asian buffet was nothing special, but did have sushi too. Sir Georges was very nice, food was delicious and service was very good. The main buffet at St. Anne’s was just OK, with a large variety of food and it was not too busy. We got tired of the same food; they also ran out of lettuce and breads one day. The Italian restraint made for a nice late night meal or snack. There is no room service, but you could take a plate back to your room. We typically left a few bucks after served meals and a couple bucks after buffets. Servers did not expect a tip and many tables did not leave one. Jerk chicken on the beach was very good and is highly recommended – blend the sweet & spicy sauces for optimal taste.

Drinks were great and liquor was good. Not shy on the shots and servers were by pools and in bars. Again, OK to tip but did not change the type of service. There were no top-shelf brands, mostly the local stuff; not too bad. Appleton Rum seemed to be the local favorite. The beer, Red Stripe, was always cold and plentiful. Good chance to mix it up and try something different.

Pools, Beach and Entertainment,
Pools closed at 6pm, which was a drag. They pretty much kick you out at 6:15 and that’s it. Deluxe wing pools were very clean and much quieter than non-deluxe side. Infinity pool on deluxe wing was nice, but not much shade on this side of the resort pools. Finding chairs were no problem. Swim-up bar was great and partially shaded. Beach was clean and water was “bluetiful”. Both ocean and pool water temps were very warm, easily in the 80’s.

Free snorkeling, kayaks and paddleboats: Deposit required but refunded after equipment return: You were required to sign a “hold harmless” waiver. If you knew how to sail, you could take sailboat; or you had to pay a fee for a lesson before you could go. If you snorkel (1 hour free), go in the ocean in front of the deluxe wing out by the swimming buoy: That is where the reef is and plenty to see under water. A $25 deposit is required. It was too hot to play tennis, but there were two courts: Balls and rackets at the front desk.

Daily entertainment varied and all staff seemed to work hard to make guests enjoy their stay. The daily activities board in lobby identified what and when. Every night they had a show and/or theme; some on the beach and others on stage. The Sports Bar included 2 pool tables (coin-op), an air hockey table (out of order), 3 arcade games ($.25/pp), and a small casino. About ½ of the slot machines did not work, but we did win a few dollars. The on-site disco was not very busy and could be improved, perhaps with better dance music.

You will be approached to buy illegal drugs. The resort attempts to keep solicitors off property, and for the most part do a very good job. Walking the beach to far in either direction gets you to the other public areas. At night, people swim up out of the dark ocean and approach you in the dark. At no time did I feel a security risk.

Summary
Overall, the resort was good. It was not a white glove resort and is not comparable to the RIU Palace resorts. If on a tight budget, it is a good choice. The people of Jamaica seemed to be genuinely friendly and happy, which made the holiday enjoyable. I would go back to this resort, but I have many other places I would like to go first.

Room Tip: Stay in the deluxe wing if you want less noise, more restaraunt choices and a cleaner pool.

We stayed 9/6-9/16. It was our first time staying at this resort. We have stayed at a Riu in Cancun several years ago, so knew what to expect. Last year we stayed at Iberostar Suites in Montego Bay. I was expecting the same, but knew that Riu would likely not be as nice. Honestly, I would have thought this place was excellent if I did not have anything to compare it to. We stayed in a junior suite, ocean view. I suspect that all of the rooms have some view of the ocean.

The entertainment area was always full, we didn't bother to sit through the entire show each night. What we saw was good though. It was off season, so all of the tours that we wanted to do, did not have their minimum amount of reservations. I would suggest hiring a private driver, especially if you want to see something not so typical. We used Glen Garwood. I highly recommend him. So knowledgeable about the country, great driver and personable.

Pros- Beach is wonderful, we always had our choice of beach loungers. There was always one available in the shade or sun, whatever your preference. This may be different during peak times. Wifi availability included in the deluxe area. The jerk hut and the barbecue on the beach were great. The jerk hut was my favorite for lunch. The drinks were not watered down at all. I did notice that my drinks were getting stronger as the week went on. I usually gave a tip per drink to the bartenders. The staff was friendly and attentive. Didn't see many people do it, but tipping a few dollars can go a long way. The variety of the food at the buffet was sufficient and the quality was adequate. We were able to make our reservations at the specialty restaurants at one time, despite the reviews that have said that you have to stand in line each day. Since it was off season, all of the restaurants and buffet areas were not open. During the day Piccola and Plantation were available for lunch. Mammee Bay was not open for lunch. This was sufficient since the resort was not packed and there is the jerk hut.

Cons- I was hesitant about the resort when I read the reviews before I booked to stay there. I was most concerned about the comments about roaches. I only saw two while I was there. One huge cockroach walking through the entertainment area, no big deal this is the tropics. The other was a roach on the dessert bar at the Mammee Bay Steak House. We took JTL tours for airport transport through Travelocity. After being dropped off at the airport, the bus full of passengers were responsible for unloading the bus. Very chaotic. That has nothing to do with the Riu, but wanted to mention it.

It was my first time to Jamacia and RIU made it the best vacation ever. The check-in was so smooth and the lady was so nice. Our room was immaculate, the maids did a great job. The best part of our trip was the ENTERTAINMENT STAFF. They were so friendly and very energetic with the long hours that they had to work. Pim and 007 were so entertaining and they can really dance!!! They were so fun with great personalities!!! The food was great and waiters/waitresses were so friendly and nice. They could use some seasoning on most of the food. Now I am looking for deals on-line so I can come back soon.
