“Amazing Honeymoon!”
Reviewed April 21, 2014

We just returned from our weeklong honeymoon at San Souci. It was fantastic! The food, the service, the room, the pools, the beaches. All just wonderful! Was everything perfect? No but is anything?

Being greeted after getting our luggage and taken into an air conditioned room with wata and Red Stripe and clean bathrooms is a great way to start. Our driver kept us entertained on the nearly 2-hour trip. We learned so much! Met at the resort with a cool cloth and glass of champagne and led right in to get our room. We were escorted to our room and it was great! Large balcony, 2 bathrooms, stocked mini-bar as we requested. Perfect! Room was a bit dated but who cares? We were barely in our room! We took a walk, got lost, and then got a ride to where we wanted to go. There are TONS of stairs but it helps keep you from gaining weight from the amazing food!

The beach bar was good, maybe too much syrup in some but still great. The swim up bar, I felt, had better quality drinks because they tasted less syrupy. Byron was great! Jamaican Delights are fabulous!

Water sports were very fun! Derron, a lifeguard, sang all the time and he is talented! Snorkeling, hydro-bikes, paddles boats, and the ocean kayaks were great ways to spend our time.

The beaches are nice. We only went to Sunset beach after 6 so we didn't experience the nudity. The main beach is quiet and we loved the little pier to sit on in the middle of the swimming area. We didn't like the little sandy area by the fitness area because there were lots of bees!

Our favorite daytime hangout was the mineral pool. It's quiet and relaxing.

The spa was great too! Ruth and Kenneth took care of us.

The restaurants are also wonderful. Make reservations for Casanova and for Pallazinna. The Beach Grille is great and no reservations are needed. It's called something else for dinner but it's the same place with different food. Kemal was our server the first time we ate there and remembered our names all week, as did most of the staff. Our favorite dinner spot was Pallazinna. The pasta bar is great and the food is yummy! Oshawn was our favorite server at Casanova. Breakfast and lunch at Pallazinna is a buffet with different stations inside and out. Again, YUMMY. Kerdaine is very friendly and makes every visit better. Room service was ok. Good fruit but selection at Pallazinna is way better. The chips for the nachos were stale. The best snack place is Charlie's Bar. It's a veggie bar with a small menu to choose from as well as great smoothies! The pumpkin-jalapeño dip is unbelievably delicious! Nickoy is quiet but quite funny as he serves and cooks for you.

Our favorite nighttime spot was the Martini Bar. Kimberly and Q are so kind and thoughtful. I couldn't get enough of the Flirtinis. I wish we had discovered it earlier! It's only open 5-9 and not at all on Tuesdays or Fridays.

Make sure you ask for your mini bar to be restocked before 2 AM or it won't be.

We always had new towels even if we hung them up to say we would reuse them. New ones were there after the room was cleaned and new ones were there after the nightly turn-down service.

The guest services people and the tour desk people are so friendly and helpful...even when we got on the wrong tour bus and messed up our trip and another couple's trip, they took care of us.

We are already trying to see when we can go back. We love the relaxing atmosphere and the friendly staff who welcomed us daily by name. Thank you!

Room Tip: Tuesday's beach dinner is phenomenal! Don't take too much or you won't have room for all...

Thank you very much for the phenomenal review of Couples Sans Souci! We're glad that you took advantage of our built in exercise program (otherwise known as the stairs) - we find that it helps keep the desserts guilt free.

It's wonderful to hear how much you enjoyed the resort and our team. Hopefully we'll have another opportunity to host you again.

Nothing was too much trouble for the staff at this luxurious hotel. The food was fantastic with a good choice of restaurants. The room was spacious and comfortable. I would thoroughly recommend this place to anyone who wants a relaxing holiday where your every need is cared for but where there is plenty to do should you want it. Because the resort is small we never had any trouble finding a seat on the beach or around the pool. The evening entertainment was brilliant particularly the gala night and the beach party.

Room Tip: Look for one that overlooks the beach

The Couples Lounge is still top notch and a cold Red Stripe on tap is a great way to spend the few minutes before they send you on your way to your resort. It is sad that other resorts have closed their lounges and leave guests to figure out their own transportation. Couples still does it the old way, and I love it still! Considering the inclusions at the Couples resorts they still seem like a great value for the price to me because of the included excursions, wifi, stocked minibars, great food and rooms, included transportation and airport lounge, etc....
We arrived at 4 PM and our room was ready. We were booked in a One Bedroom Beachfront Suite (Block A or B) and I was going to request a third floor room in Block A, but that is where they had us placed already. We were in Suite A34. The view of the main pool, beach, and water was excellent.
We loved the room and really appreciated the separate seating/tv area and the sheer size of the room. This room was almost 2x as large the rooms at other resorts we have enjoyed. The bed was very firm, and the furniture was attractive. The Dresser was old and the drawers were not easy to open and close but it was not much of an issue. This is to be addressed in the huge room renovation scheduled to being during low season later this year. We briefly toured the new look in the one newly renovated 'sample' room and it is great. Still very large, but with more of an open floor plan than in the existing rooms. We would be happy with the new design, but also loved the old layout. I will not miss that huge Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom when it is taken out during renovation. It took forever to fill it up and the jets were not strong enough to do much. We used it once, just because it was there but will not miss it when it's gone. It will be a year or so before all the rooms are done, but the time line mentioned at the Repeater Dinner was somewhat cloudy with no hard dates mentioned. We loved our room and would likely book the same class again due to its location on the bottom level of the resort and its proximity to Sunset Beach. The people who talked to who booked the rooms higher up were equally delighted with their rooms due to the amazing views, more recently renovated rooms, and larger balconies. I would not hesitate to stay up there either. The people up there loved it.
Speaking of the beaches.... this was the major weakness for us at CSS. We have been to Jamaica more than enough times and stayed at more than enough different places in Jamaica to know that the beaches on the north coast will never be the equal of those in Negril. They are beautiful to look at, and that is important too, but Negril has spoiled us a bit over the years. We actually only got in the ocean twice during the week (we are in it every 30 minutes or so when at CN). After meeting someone who spent the day getting urchin spines pulled from her foot by a local doctor we noticed that the only people who were going in the water more than ankle deep tended to have water shoes on. I would recommend them if you want to get in the water. Don't expect the beautiful white sandy bottom that is comfortable to walk on at CN and many other places in Negril.
Wifi was free all over the resort (but not at SSB from what I could tell). The signal in our room worked well on balcoy, but not as well inside the room. I hope they boost that signal for the next folks.
Room service was prompt, friendly, and the food was very good. We did not have dinner in the room, but we did do breakfast on the balcony once, nachos to watch a movie with one night, and a great Club Sandwich for 'second lunch' one day when we had late dinner reservations. The minibar was stocked on our arrival with Red Stripes, Coke, bottled water, Ting, Orange Juice, and Cranberry Juice (as requested in our online check-in as Romance Rewards members. The bottles of liquor on the bar were fresh new bottles of Appleton Rum and Kirov Vodka (love the Appleton, not a huge fan of the Kirov!). But these were the bottles I had requested and there were many other choices for those who want something different. They checked every day to see if we needed anything restocked and took care of it quickly each time.
Breakfast : We did either room service or the buffet at Palazina each day. It was excellent every day. . The fruit selection was great every single day! I love mango, papaya, naseberries, etc... and they were plentiful and fresh every morning.
Lunch is room service (sandwiches, pizza, soup, etc...), or buffet at Palazina, ala carte at Bella Vista on the beach, or buffet over at the nude beach. They cook burgers and things all day at the nude grill over on Sunset Beach, but they also set out a nice selection of salads, vegetables, and entrees at lunch time every day. It was great to be able to have a really good meal with varied selections without having to leave SSB. For the most part we found it worth the walk over to Bella Vista for the Jerk Chicken, soups, etc.. with table service. This was our favorite place to eat with nice tables, linen napkins, great service, and a wide menu.
Dinner could of course be room service, but we preferred the restaurants. Couples resorts continue to have the best food I have had at an A-I in Jamaica. Casanova is their 'upscale' restaurant that requires reservations but also long pants, real shoes, and collared shirt for men. We only ate there one night. The food was good, as was the service, but the place was too hot and there was a battle it seemed going on between the piano player in Casanova and the Showtime band just outside the open doors. We ate at Palazina one night and it was good, but again, it did not draw us back. Every other night we chose Bella Vista and had the best meals, service, and ambiance of all for us. The cool breezes off the water just steps away, and the torches set along the beach made it beautiful as well as comfortable and the food and service were top notch!
There were three nights during the week when dinner was not at a restaurant. Friday night gala had great food and entertainment on the lawn. Tuesday night is the Beach Party which is dominated by mainly Jamaican dishes. Wednesday night is the Repeat Guest Dinner Party on the main pool deck. The food and entertainment was great at all three events and the decorations and preparations they put into getting the venues set up and ready for each event are just amazing.
The bars and bartenders were all excellent at every bar.. and we tried them all! On the nude beach the ladies there made the rounds on the beach to refill drinks and take orders all day long. We prefer to go to the bar ourselves, but we would not have needed to! Outstanding!
Sunset Beach is nude (not C/O) until it opens to allow all to view the sunset in the evening. Then it is C/O. The beach is large, with lots of sun, lots of shade, lots of palapas (shade structures), a great bar, a large pool with a pool volleyball game going in part of it almost all day, and a great snack grill that operates most of the day. . It is an excellent nude complex, I just wish the beach had a nicer sandy bottom to walk on to make getting in out of the ocean more pleasant.
Couples includes off resort excursions at each resort. We love the 3x per week Sunset Cruise to the cliffs when we are at CN! At CSS (and CTI) one of the included activities is Dunn's River Falls. This is a great excursion for anyone who has not done it, and a real added value since it is included in the A-I , but this is something we might do once every 5 trips or so. We get a lot more joy and value out of the sunset catamaran booze cruises several times a week at CN.
Due to being members of the Romance Rewards program we had a couple hundred $ in resort credit to spend. We usually spend it in the gift shop, but this time we did a couples massage on SSB and it was outstanding!
The down side at CSS (for some people) has not changed since it was GLSS... it is a lot of stairs to go up from the beach level to the evening entertainment, Balloon Bar, etc... You can call from the phones all over the resort they will pick you up in a van and take you up and down whenever you want, so it's not like you have to walk it if you don't want too. But a walk around the grounds at CSS is amazing! It is breathtakingly beautiful with so many hidden wonders to discover! There is a pool at the top level, a mineral pool and hot tub around the middle level, and the main and nude pools on the beach level. The resort was full but never once felt crowded at any time due to only having 150 rooms and a large number of great places to spend your time.
CN should take a lesson from CSS in the case of the beach grill at lunch! At CSS you sit and order lunch from a great menu at your table ,while at CN you have to order at the counter and hang around to pick up your food when they call you. CSS has this right and CN should pay attention! Bella Vista Restaurant at CSS was a real treasure day and night!
We will go back to CSS, though I think I still prefer CN because of the included Cat Cruises, Lychee and Otaheite Restaurants, and the amazing beach!

Room Tip: The views are amazing from Blocks C-G! A and B are down near the beach,

My husband and I just came home from a week at Couples San Souci, Ochos Rios, Jamaica, and we had a wonderful week. Couples San Souci stands out in two areas. First of all, the grounds are beautiful. The resort is built on a hill, and every nook and cranny is well maintained and lovely. The views from the top are the prettiest we have seen in Jamaica (this was our third trip to this resort, and our 10th plus to Jamaica). The flowers and gardens are well maintained, and the pond near the a/u beach is just lovely, a perfect place for a stroll or a visit to see the birds, turtles, fish, and the resident parrot in his cage. The grounds reflect the second strength of Couples San Souci: The staff. Everyone from manager Pierre to the cleaning and grounds staff are friendly, responsive, and seem to really enjoy their jobs and take pride in their contributions to the resort. We were there at the time of the bi-annual staff recognition party, and it was nice to know so many staff and departments were recognized for their service. The entertainment also was excellent: Tammy T and the Entertainment Director both provided great vocals at the gala, and the steel drum band at the beach party was enthusiastic and fun. The food throughout the resort was consistently good, and the wait staff was friendly and responsive to our needs. The people who managed the bars were efficient and knowledgeable, and the drinks were delicious. The rooms were very clean, with a lovely sitting area, a large walk in shower (that could use some safety strips), a large Jacuzzi that we never used (as the weather was beautiful, and a well stocked frig. Our room even had a box of Bigalow tea and a small electric teapot for us tea drinkers; what a nice touch!. The furnishings and bathrooms are probably due for an update, but we were shown a prototype of the updates CSS are working on, and we look forward to those improvements (as long as it doesn't raise the prices!). Since our last visit, many improvements had been made, including a renovation at the beach restaurant, Bueno Vista, as well as new hot tub and a reworking of the main pool on the a/n side. We meet up with many friends in Jamaica each year around this time, and we already are planning our stay for next year.

Room Tip: When we travel in the Carribbean, I like to be on the second floor. Sometimes, if it is very humid...

The rooms are a bit dated, yet are very spacious. The service was wonderful. The food and drinks were good. I enjoyed the local cuisine. Tennis lessons were fun. The grounds were beautiful! The beaches were small, but clean with little or no waves. It was a nice place to relax. I liked the mineral pool and healthy snack bar. The martini bar was a lot of fun too. Sometimes the events at the Balloon Bar kept us awake longer then we wished, but it wasn't too bad.

We did a private dinner on Sunset Beach, and it was amazing! I had a lobster... and that was the best lobster I have ever had, EVER. It was a very private dinner. There was one other couple who arrived towards the end of our dinner and they were seated all the way across the beach. Bring bug spray if you attend to hang around Sunset Beach at night.

Onto the tours! We are more the explore the area type and there really wasn't much of that to do. We convinced our driver to take us into the heart of Ochos Rios, so that was fun. I forget his name, but he was very cool. He answered a lot of our questions honestly and I learned a lot from him. Dolphin Cove was fun, but you are there a lot longer then you need to be... and the prices at the resort are way overpriced for it. Dunn's River Falls was fun and refreshing. The lagoon trip was uneventful. You take a small boat out into the bay and swim for maybe 10 minutes... not worth the price. I wish the trips into town were more frequent. The snorkeling trips were not that impressive to me, but I'm comparing it to Belize, so.

It is a long drive to the resort from the airport. The roads are not bad, but it's a lot of quick stops and go stuff, so if you get car sick easily take something beforehand. Be prepared to tip people. They told us at the airport to put our bags in a pile and wouldn't let us carry them to the bus. It is a weird feeling because we are used to traveling and keeping our belongings with us. Well, once we got to the bus we were strongly encouraged to tip the men who carried our bags. We are two very able bodied people who were more than willing to carry our own bags. It was silly. We should have the option to carry our own bags.

I agonized over finding the perfect hotel for our honeymoon, it was all in vain. Couples San Souci was perfect. It's no wonder they have 'repeaters' who've been coming for 20 years. I've stayed at big resorts like the RIU in the past but this one was small and intimate. I felt more catered too and they remembered our names. You can keep to yourself or get to know other friendly couples (adults only). The rooms are large, quiet and comfortable. There's plenty of seating and you can eat breakfast on the huge balcony. I miss having cook to order omelettes every morning, with fresh pancakes and a smoothie.

This resort has a no tipping policy. I inquired at the front desk just like Trip Advisor advises. We actually wanted to tip but they wouldn’t give us change because they said it’s prohibited. I was stunned because we still got good service.

People complain about the stairs. I needed a workout after eating so much but if you have mobility issues, that could be a problem. We actually preferred the regular beach to the 'au natural' one. There's always a chair and umbrella available and it's a short walk no matter which area you stay in. We did see some peeping toms looking through the bushes on our bike ride past the au natural beach. Also, the the ocean floor there was more rocky. I'd recommend beach shoes which we bought in the on site store for about $10. But the toiletries they sell are high.

The meals were great even at the non-reservation restaurants and Chef George more than accommodated my food allergies. The restaurants are open late which is great if you have a late flight. I took a fitness class in the mineral pool. They make fresh juices there until 5pm (with veggies and fruits) as well as vegetarian wraps. The hubby worked out at the gym and he even found a heavy bag for boxing.

Yes the nighttime entertainment was lousy but making fun of the lounge singers and watching people dance is part of the fun ;). There's a business center to print and a really short tour you can take to get acquainted with the property. Check the calendar for activities such as hat making, art, etc.

The glass bottom boat ride and snorkeling were fun (weather permitting). Even though it rained a lot in December, we still found plenty to do without leaving the resort. But if you leave, I'd suggest going to the Blue Hole vs. the crowded Dunn's River Falls. If you do go to Dunn's, don't buy the DVD! The Blue Hole is free and you get your own guide, all you have to do is tip them. Catch a cab and wear a life jacket. My husband is already ready to return to San Souci. I hope you love it as much as we did!

Room Tip: Ocho Rios is loud. You can't hear other couples but if you sleep with your windows open, you wi...
