Definitely a must do... but BE CAUTIOUS

I am not surprised by the terrible reviews. Although we had a great time we are 20 something year olds who are very active and athletic. I would never let any young children, older adults (who are inactive or unhealthy) or seniors do this tour. It's very poorly supervised and I can't imagine it would be easy for any emergency service to reach you if something were to happen.

I only saw a guide maybe 3 times on the 2+ hours climbing. There was a group of at least 100 people and they have you form a large chain. At certain points you need someone to pull you up to the next level, but often the chain of hands would break and you found yourself in a pretty dangerous situation trying to climb a 5 foot rock on your own.

Again a must do, but I did it once and probably would pass on doing it a second time.

Thank Ndlove

We travelled on the Cool Runnings Catamaran to the Dunns RIver falls, snorkelling en route which was an excellent extra part of the day out. The climb itself is a fantastic experience and the guides are excellent with everyone young and old including taking photos along the way.

Climbing as a human chain is a great experience as everyone is in it together and you really work as a team for 970ft literally against the tide. It was a great experience and exhilarating when you got to the top and looked back down.

The boat trip back saw the full party swing into action with the rum punch flowing and dancing on deck with all the children leading the way (with the dancing!!). Definitely do the combined cruise and climb for the full experience.

Dunn’s River Falls are an amazing attraction, both for the tourist and nature enthusiast, as one can walk up a large portion of the naturally spring-fed waterfalls, while enjoying the lush greenery on either side of the length of the falls. Conveniently based in Ocho Rios near many other attractions, Dunn’s River Falls is easy to access from both cruise ships and is only about a 1.5 hour drive from MoBay.
Once arriving, we were assigned to a group of approx. 20 people (all strangers), with a very loud tour guide who blatantly tell you they work off of tips, and expects them at the end of the walk. Another person with a video camera states that he will video you and the entire group, for a fee (approx. $40 USD) and proceeds to engage the group in chanting and screaming sayings for the benefit of the video. We were not thrilled with this escapade as it sounded like something out of spring break. The guide tells you to hold hands in a long chain with the other group members, and assists by telling you where to step and walk along the falls in the safest manner to avoid slipping. We did not opt to do the video, nor did we hold hands with the strangers of our group and we were able to walk the falls with no issues or injuries, staying near our initial group, but allowed to be more independent.
The guide will try to take your camera at the beginning of the walk, and will take photos of you throughout using your own camera, but expects a tip at the end for his assistance. I held onto my waterproof camera and once the guides realized they weren’t going to get any additional money from us, left us alone with no more pressure, and we took amazing pictures on our own. The entire walk up the falls took approx. 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on how quickly you walked, or how many times you stop to take pictures. Some sections of the falls were slippery – especially the sections and rocks with black moss – so go slow or avoid them. Overall, the walk up the falls was not strenuous, was definitely enjoyable with great scenery, and as we walked more on our own, did not feel overly crowded or hurried even with other groups around.
I’ve done the other River Walk in JA, and that was extremely less crowded, less touristy, and more natural feeling, however, Dunn’s felt and was more like climbing an actual waterfall rather than just a walk along a river. The choice of which water walk to do definitely depends on personal style and activity preference. Having done both Dunn’s and the River Walk, I can honestly say I like the tranquility of the River Walk, but Dunn’s must be done at least once.
Dunn’s River Falls is definitely a must-do attraction and activity, as the property has been developed and expanded to include many touristy features and accommodations, and yet still maintains that natural element while traversing through the river falls.
Recommendations:
- Best time to go is very early, or very late in the day. We went early (before 9AM) and had only several groups walking the falls with us.
- Avoid, at all costs, days that the cruise ships are docked on the island. The large number of crowds will diminish the best part of the activity- the Waterfalls itself!
- Bring your own water shoes that fit well. You can rent/buy them at little shops on-site, but the several people I saw who bought/rented, end up breaking or losing the shoes during the river walk.
- Bring money in small denominations of bills if you wish to store your stuff in one of the lockers for rent, or if you wish to visit the shops when exiting the falls.
- Use a waterproof camera, since you, and it, will get wet.
- Especially if coming from MoBay or other distant towns, pair the trip to Dunn’s River Falls with other excursions or even a trip to the duty free shops in Ocho town to get the most out of your day.
- This excursion may not be suitable or easy for all people, as we saw several older persons, those with mobility issues, and those with very young/small children struggling to get up the waterfalls.

What an experience! Climbing up the smooth rocks in a group chain in the cool water in a tropical paradise. The guides are fantastic, they get you to fall and slide into naturally formed deep pools as part of your journey up the falls.

Very picturesque and a natural wonder. Fantastic!

highly recommend this experience, however one needs to be reasonably fit to navigate the falls as the falls are steep in places & the rocks very slippery. advice one goes with a guide to ensure a safe experience.
