This is a great place to stay but it helps to know the program. The condos are owned by private owners. Most are great people and some are only interested in making as much money with as little time and investment as possible. Many owners pay someone else to rent the units for them. The don't know about your experience and don't want to. I highly recommend you rent through the resident manager Mr Lonsdale (876 919 7164). If he's not available leave a number and he will call you back. He manages the entire operation and answers only to the association board. He's been there 25 years and is a man of integrity. He represents various owners and is on site and will take care of any problems. Do not be afraid to barter a bit, sometimes it helps and it is the Jamaican way of doing business. If ANY food bits are left on counters or floor you will positively have ants. After cleaning the problem area they will disappear after some time but you will always see an occasional ant checking to see if you are careless again. When it rains the rivers flow from the hills and bring mud with them. The water normally clears in a few hours. Stay out of the water until it clears. Be polite to the beggars. Most of these are not the druggies and alcoholics you see in some countries. There are few jobs in Jamaica and they pay very poorly. That nicely dressed lady helping you probably lives in a shack in the hills. Some families sleep in shifts so all have a place to lay down. If a disheveled person says they haven't eaten there is a good chance they haven't. Do not feel obligated to give and be patient with the persistent ones, this is their only means of survival. Get Jamaican currency from the cambios and it will be easier to pay for items. The local banks have ATMS and the fees are reasonable. Some ATMS have a choice between US and Jamaican currency. Do not be afraid to walk the main roads at night. There are eyes looking out for you that you do not see. I am a night owl and wander back from downtown late and have never had an incident. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be somewhat vigilant late at night. I drink the tap water and have never gotten ill. I eat from the venders and have never gotten ill. Remember, this is a third world country and you will experience some unpleasantries you haven't run into before. This is what most of the world is like. Relax, don't expect a sanitized world, and go with the flow and you'll have a great time!
