Owner description: Scenic drive through a three-mile-long canyon, shaded by trees and ferns.

When visiting Ocho Rios, we booked river tubing and Dunn's River Falls. After we finished both activities we enjoyed lunch and didn't really want to do shopping and didn't have time for the beach so we added a drive through Fern Gully. It is a short drive that is cool and peaceful and beautiful if you enjoy natural beauty. Our guide told us that there are over 200 species of ferns in the area and that it is a rainforest type environment. That's why the ferns flourish so much. While driving, it is so quiet. There are areas where you don't hear a single sound--so nice after encountering the many tourists at the Falls. There are vendors set up in the area, but we didn't stop and shop. Again, this is not a destination for a long time visit, but it made a nice conclusion for our day in Ocho Rios before returning to the ship.

I always enjoy driving up through Breadnut Hill going up to Fern Gully and driving back down the gully showing my guests the various shops and natural sights of Fern Gully.

Fern Gully is a winding road that goes to the top of one of the hills. The road follows the path of a dried up river. There is lush foliage on either side of the road that towers. The reason for the two stars is that we were in a taxi and were unable to see most of the foliage unless we stuck our heads out the window and looked up. It might be better in a convertible or large bus with windows in the roof. There are tourist arts stands along the way and the cabbie feels obligated to stop at his friend's shop. Just say no. Go to the main Craft area on Main Street for better buys. The Fern Gully doesn't make sense if it costs you anything.
