We hired our own personal taxi driver who took us thru Fern Gully. Our Drivers name was Dave. Daves adventure tours. He was fun to be around and told us alot about Jamaica and the herbs that grow there and what the natives of the island use them for. He also took us up the mountain to a beautiful bar with the most amazing view of Ocho Rios. Would recommend this driver anyday. You can find him in the driveway at Sunset Jamaica Grande.

A decision to make Fern Gully a destination in itself will depend upon how much one loves nature and enjoys seeing unique and localized natural anomalies. This being said, it is a special place.

Most people may enjoy making it a part of their Ocho Rios tour.

Our Jaital guide drove through the Fern gully on our way out of town on our Nine Miles Bob Marley tour.

The road follows the route of what was once an old riverbed, which dried up following the earthquake of 1907. The river at the time was one of the eight rivers within the Ocho Rios area (which supposedly is how the town got its name).

We understand that nowadays it is not as dark and covered as it was once; that at various times the light was completely shut out in some places due to the canopy of ferns being so tall and bending over the roadway.

There are apparently 300 of the 500 species of Ferns in Jamaica growing just in this gorge.
It is a lovely, serene, winding drive through rainforest, hardwoods and ferns.

There are several vendors along the route selling local fruits, veggies and crafts including unique woodwork and sculptures (though we’re not sure that some of the pieces could be prominently displayed as souvenirs back home)!

Overall, it is well worth the drive-thru for the various and special things to see!

Fern Gully was neat to see, but it is what it is. What we really liked about this was our tour guide or taxi driver was excellent and gave us history, and information through our drive up into the mountains and showed many neat things about Jamaica. Fern Gully was just one of the many sights we saw on that day, and had to be one of the best excursions we did. Fern Gully is just an area with many ferns in it. Our tour guide showed so much more.

At one time there were ferns covering the road and making it almost dark during the daytime. No longer is this happening. I thought it was not that scenic at all. Once you get to the top, there is a decent view but not spectacular. Of coarse there are people wanting to sell you stuff. Be very careful with taxi drivers and have them write out what it will cost to go somewhere.
