“Very nice people but be prepared”
Reviewed January 5, 2013

Like the title suggests, the people are very friendly. However, they can be slightly "assertive" when trying to make a deal. We went to a smaller market venue to do the shopping, which was nice because it wasnt full with tourists. We had a hard time refusing some of the store owners because they were friendly but we found some great items at reasonable prices. They will negotiate on the prices but be reasonable with your offers; you don't want to insult them and they are trying to make a living.
All the little huts have similar items so dont buy the first things you see. If you walk around and check out the other stores, you can haggle better with the shop owners.

“Scary place with very aggressive vendors and drug pushers”
Reviewed December 31, 2012

No wonder that you don't see this place crowded. The place is full of shacks with no electricity and the vendors start pushing you right from the moment you step foot in it. From hair braids to T shirts, the prices start in USD even if you don't want to buy in USD.

Found a coupla folks who tried to even push ganja..

We felt very uneasy with children and decided to leave as quickly as we entered...

“Stay at resort”
Reviewed December 27, 2012

Very disappointed. A little uneasy with crowd. Quality of what was available merchandise and market was not worth the time. Felt I should have stayed at my hotel beach and spa.

“It's not a craft market!”
Reviewed December 26, 2012

I was looking forward to visiting this market, as it was called "Craft Market" on the Ocho Rios Attractions map. I was hoping to shop for unique handmade items of local artists. I was very disappointed to find out that the market is full of the same junky souvenirs over and over again and the vendors are very aggressive and pushy.

Also the washroom at the market was incredibly filthy. Bring your own bathroom tissue, as the washroom doesn't have any... at least when I was there :(

“Don't Bother Unless You Really Need that Souvenir”
Reviewed November 23, 2012

I would not bother shopping here unless you are disparate to get a souvenir and are ok with shopping as a contact sport. The market is full of the same junky souvenirs over and over again and the vendors are very aggressive and pushy; probably the worst I have experienced anywhere despite extensive travels in Mexico, the Caribbean and Asia where vendors are often aggressive. If you do shop here, split your money into small amounts in different pockets so when you pull out your money to buy from one vendor, the others vendors will not see that you have a lot more. You will still be descended upon by the other vendors but it will not be quite as bad and you can claim you have little or no more money and they lose interest more quickly. This is a technique I use with some success on a regular basis when shopping in such circumstances.
