“Great Experience”
Reviewed February 12, 2014

We stayed at Royalton from Feb 5-10, 2014.

Overall this resort was fantastic. It was clean, the staff was friendly, and the food was great.

Positives:

Beach: The beach was fantastic, it was clean, the water was beautiful, and a comfortable place to swim. There was even a private island with additional lounge chairs and umbrellas to accommodate people if the beach got overcrowded.

Staff: The staff was friendly and extremely helpful. Everyone from the bartenders to the pool staff had a smile on their face. Timroy Cunningham was great and went out of his way to answer any questions we had about the resort.

Food: The buffet had a wide variety of food depending on what you felt like. The food was fresh and was constantly replenished. The steak house was our favorite of the A la carte restaurants.

Drinks: The resort offered premium alcohol at no additional cost, which was nice. All the drinks were made with care and the staff had no problem making a non-traditional request.

Rooms: The rooms were clean and ultra modern. The beds were comfortable and the rain showerhead was a nice touch. The mini fridge was filled up daily with soft drinks, juices, and beer, all complimentary. The TV offered Canadian and American channels, which was nice and allowed us to keep up to date on the Olympics.

Extras: The hotel has Wi-Fi everywhere. We were able to read and use our electronic devices on the beach. The waterslides were fun and were a nice way to break up the day on the beach. The sports bar was awesome. We able to change the channel and watch two leaf games while having wings and poutine, which was a surprise to us! The gym was new and had everything you needed for a light workout.

Negatives:

The minute you stepped off the resort beach, or even on the resort beach for that matter, we were constantly hassled to buy drugs and merchandise. This made for walks on the beach less enjoyable.

The Italian A la carte was not very good, and I would recommend eating at the buffet rather than going there.

The excursions were expensive, anywhere from $130-$160, which we found more expensive then other places we have travelled too.
After dinner we usually came back to our room to change and rest before going back out at roughly around 9:00pm. Around this time every night, housekeeping knocked on our door and after we repeatedly asked them not to come in, they entered the room. We found it odd that they would first of all come to the room at that time of night, and proceed to enter the room after we requested them not too.

Like I said before, overall we had a great experience here and would recommend people looking for a quiet, and peaceful vacation. It is not a very lively resort, so if you’re looking for lots of activities and a party atmosphere, this probably isn’t the resort for you.

My husband and I were tired of the -40 wind chills and the foot of snow that's been on the ground all during January. On a whim, we worked with our local travel agency and booked a 4-day weekend to this resort. We were there Feb. 7-10, 2014.

We had read the reviews before we booked, but we tend to be pretty laid back and had a feeling that things were not as bad as some people make out. After our 4 days there, we can honestly say that we believe some people like to complain just to complain. If you're going into a trip like this with the mindset that you're on vacation and there to relax, then you'll be able to appreciate the GORGEOUS place you're in and the EXCELLENT service you're receiving.

Our room - We had a room with a king bed on the 4th floor with an ocean view. It was lovely! We both found the bed to be even more comfortable than our bed at home. We loved sitting on the balcony and enjoying the breeze. We had no issues with anything not functioning, etc. Our room was attended to each day, including the drinks in our mini fridge. Sure, it's not a full bar with only water, beer, soda and juice - BUT we were perfectly capable to walk down a ways to go downstairs to one of the full bars and get whatever we wanted to take back.

Beach - Yes, it's small... but we were there to relax and enjoy the scenery, and it's plenty big for that. We never had any issue finding a chair, and at some point each day a cabana bed would open up and we'd move to one. We walked on the beach, we swam in the ocean, and we just enjoyed this beautiful place. There was a nice breeze, so we never got too hot.

Pools - BEAUTIFUL! We spent a good bit of time in the pools each day, especially the one with the swim up bar. So convenient! Also, no issues getting dry towels from the towel hut anytime we needed fresh ones. We got in the hot tub a few times and found that to be good as well.

Bars - We always got great drinks and great service. Remon at the pool bar was our favorite - he was a lot of fun to talk to and would make us all sorts of different drinks to try... and all were delicious! We had no issue getting a variety of drinks all weekend! When we were on the beach or in the pool chairs, a server regularly came by to attend to us.

Food - We found it to be delicious. We especially loved having jerk chicken on the beach for lunch each day. We easily got snacks in the cafe and sports bar when we wanted them. We loved the breakfast buffet. And we tried all the restaurants except the Japanese one and found that we had a good meal. Was it the best meal of your life? No. But it was still tasty and had flavor, and we felt plenty satisfied after each time we ate.

We didn't use the spa, the fitness center or do any of the activities. We were there to escape the cold and just relax, so we spent most of our time just laying around the beach or pool. In the evenings after dinner we'd go for a walk on the beach, and then we'd head back to the room to crash so we could get up early and squeeze in more fun the next day!

Room Tip: We got a free upgrade to an ocean view room with our package. I can see where some of the rooms wit...

Just got back from spending a Great Week at this Resort. Please IGNORE ALL negative reviews !!!!
We have been to various 5 Star Resorts throughout the Carribbean during the past 15 years and this has been one of our very favourites by far. We have never written a review in the past, but feel that this resort deserved it. The Staff throughout the resort was fantastic.....from Michelle who took care of our room, Chandrik and Samantha at the Coffee Shop and Floyd from the Entertainment Crew.
Not a day went by that we weren't greeted personally by name.....this is hard to come by. We found the staff in general were very pleasant and helpful at all times. Service was wonderful everywhere we went.....never missing anything. The little perks that they offer make being away from home seamless. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the resort.....that means everywhere....even the beach !!! You can imagine what a convenience this is when travelling with tennagers. Also, free direct calling to North America from your room......makes keeping in touch with family no issue. No reservations required for any restaurants.......nothing like not having to rush out when your on vacation.........be sure to try the Zen Japanese restaurant.....Chef Damian is quite entertaining. Fresh Beach Towels available all day long.......security actually keeps an eye on unused loungers and will remove towels if no one there for a while. Saves having to get up early just to get a spot by the pool. Beds are very comfortable and rooms are very nicely decorated. Turn down service everynight. Soft towels in the room and Cottonelle Toilet Paper to boot. Mini fridge stocked daily with water, juices, soft drinks and of course Red Stripe Beer.Grounds and pools are immaculate. Amazing water park for the young kids and adult water slides too. They have a great Martini Bar for specialty drinks for those who enjoy a nice cocktail........nice touch. Lunch Hut on the Beach everyday was a must for the "Jerk Chicken".........impressive Beach Party once a week...........they literally clear the Beach area and set up Dinner Tables for everyone......band, entertainment and local vendors. We could go on and on......overall we had a great experience and will definately return to this resort......actually looking forward to another trip.

Having known this hotel as Starfish Trelawny I could not believe difference. Unfortunately was only there on a day pass but longing to go back. It was stylish, laid back and beautifully designed. Pools and beach areas spacious and not too noisy. Staff were excellent.

The good : Very modern rooms , yet smaller than your average resort. The bad : If you pay for an upgrade to an ocean view room, I hope it is on a higher floor. You might make out the difference between the ocean and the skyline through a tiny opening. The way the building is shaped, about 1/3 of the rooms with "ocean view " will be minimal at best.
The "dream beds" there are by far the most comfortable I have ever slept on after being to more than 10 resort vacations.
Free long distance crystal clear phone calls back to Toronto was a pleasant suprise. WiFi was pretty good everywhere as well.
There are several very modern and upgraded areas such as the water park geared for kids, a gym / workout room, a coffee bar with ice cream and pastries.
The 2 of 3 a la Carte restaurants we went to Japanese , and Steakhous were very good as well. Also the jerk hut on the beach had some tasty stuff there. In general , all the food everywhere was really good. The only disappointment was that some snack foods like fries or even nachos and cheese that would be usually "self serve" at the sports bar - had to be ordered, and sometimes we waited over half hour for it.
No plastic bracelets was a nice change unless you are a Diamond guest.
Activities - Free non motorized water sports stuff - didn't notice any motorized activity at all around there .
Beach volleyball - most of us had scrapes on our knees from the rocks and stones below the surface of the sand.
Entertainment ; the shows and costumes were very good - unfortunately for us rain sometimes interfered with these outdoor shows . But the extreme opposite for the animation team for the daytime activities. Not much structure to their activities. Hardly any activities scheduled ..... or available. Where many resorts would have a few dance routines, they didn't have much at all. Whoever controlled the music was as annoying as someone changing the channel on the radio station every 30 seconds.
The staff cleaning the rooms and serving food and drinks and bar tenders were as pleasant as to be expected.
If you encountered a problem, the front desk staff weren't very helpful at all. They would say that they would call the Supervisor of the area with your issue, but that would be a dead end.
There you have it - good and bad extremes. There is a good chance you could get a room with a nice view - and if you don't encounter any problems, you can enjoy your visit here. Good small quaint place for weddings too.

There are so many good and bad aspects to this hotel that they really cancel each other to make it only a good hotel. We had a group of 50 people staying at the hotel and the reviews in general were excellent but there was so many bad experiences it really soured the whole group. The hotel is brand new but with that comes workmanship issues- broken doors, flooded rooms and sporadic supply of water. The staff were trying their best to make up for the inadequacies but they have a tough job. Check-in is terrible! We had to wait 3 hours for a room and this was only after I confronted them a number of times. They had some rooms ready so we hand picked guests who were elderly or young children as priority. I put this down to the understaffing of the cleaning ladies. They are extremely nice but very very slow. And they don't stock the rooms properly at all and we only got beer 2 of the 7 days! (other all inclusives we've been to had hard liquor and lots of beer in the room) Reservations at the sit down restaurants was impossible for groups over 4 and the Organization was borderline comical. Some restaurants were practically empty all night because they couldn't figure out how to seat people so they seemed to ignore the problem! Entertainment at night was good some nights with limbo, fire eaters and a band but then other nights it was the teen club staff and terrible bands. Anything resembling fun finished at 10pm unless you go to the sports bar to party on your own. Bring bug spray for the nighttime.

However, bad things over, there were good aspects. Beach and pools are immaculate, rooms are clean, kids area was great and buffet food was excellent. Lobster and steak was a common sight. The level of food really does exceed any all-inclusive we have ever been to. (bar a few cases of dodgy bellies with some guests but unknown origin) sports bar is small but offer great finger food and they will gladly accommodate any sport you require (we got one of the 6 nations rugby games at 9:30am after they organised to open it specifically for us) staff are generally smiling and happy (tipping was accepted but it didn't improve service ever!) on the day of our wedding the staff were very accommodating and helpful.

Overall It was a good experience for our group but I would wait another 6 months before going. Hopefully they have decided to read other peoples reviews also and sort out the check-in, room cleaning, restaurant reservations and entertainment. I do suspect that they will put up the prices at that stage also though.
