When my wife and I got displaced from Secrets Wild Orchid and forced to go to Secrets Maroma Beach last year for our honeymoon due to Hurricane Sandy, we immediately knew we would try and get to Secrets Wild Orchid for our 1 year anniversary. It was the first time to Jamaica for the both of us and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. As soon as we stepped foot in the lobby, we were welcomed with open arms and of course, Red Stripe and Jamaican Rum. Our room was not ready yet, so the staff got us a drink and told us to walk around the resort and grab some lunch while Housekeeping finished getting our room ready. We did and before we knew it we were settled in and our week of rest and relaxation could begin.
We didn't spring for the Preferred Club because we had it for our honeymoon and we didn't really utilize the amenities so we decided we weren't going to blow the extra money on it again for this trip. We had a basic Junior Oceanview Suite in the main Secrets Wild Orchid building, Room 2226. I was a little disappointed when we got to our room and saw the "view" or lack thereof of the Ocean. Anything on the first, second, or third floors seemed to have an obstructed view of the Ocean due to all the palm trees. If you want a great view to wake up to every morning, these floors are not for you. I suggest trying to get on either floor 4 or 5 if view is important to you. For us, we were up and at the pool by 8 AM every morning and out and about at night so view wasn't that important to us.
The location of this resort has its good and its bad. Its good because the airport is extremely close to the resort and its nothing more than a 15 minute cab/bus ride in order to get to the resort. Its bad because if you are looking to get off the resort and do excursions in either Ocho Rios or Negril, its about an hour and a half to two hour ride to get to either of those places and that's where the majority of the excursion worth doing are located. We really wanted to do excursions but my wife and I weren't crazy about being on a bus for that long and luckily we were able to find a zipline excursion about a half an hour from our resort that was absolutely amazing.
The resort itself is absolutely incredible. The lobby and buildings are beautiful. The palm trees, parrots, wild cats and peacocks add to the incredibly exotic nature of this resort. Each resort has two pools a piece with one of the pools being strictly for the Preferred Club. We spent all of our time at the regular Secrets Wild Orchid pool and it was so much fun. There is a pool bar that opens at 10 AM every morning and you never have to get out of the pool to drink. We spent the most of our time in the other half of the pool which required a cocktail waitress in order to get a drink. This is where we met Kedeisha. We highly recommend looking for her because she will get you whatever you want and get it quickly. There were times that my wife and I hadn't even ordered anything and she just brought us another round of what we were previously drinking. If you get the honor of meeting her and having her as your waitress, be sure to take care of her because she will never let you go thirsty.
Get to know the Secrets pool staff because they made everyday and every night so much fun. You will NOT forget their names because the majority of them don't use their actual names rather funny names that you cant forget. For those who use their real names, you wont forget their names because they are amazing people. There was Bon Jovi, Fresh Prince, Happy Feet, Cornflakes, Sparks, Cassie and Bruce just to name a few.
Don't kill yourself over what restaurant to choose for dinner every night because every single one was amazing. We highly recommend doing the Hibachi one night (reservations are required) as well as Blue Mountain, the Caribbean themed restaurant. The majority of the restaurants have outdoor seating and it may seem like a bad idea to sit outside eating in Jamaica when the temperatures are high and the humidity may be up, but some of the restaurants provide immaculate views of sunsets as well as a view of the outdoor stage that has shows mostly every night. We went for 8 nights and we made sure we ate at each restaurant at least once.
I have filled you in with the good, but unfortunately our trip has a very unfortunate ending. This review would've gotten an Excellent if it wasn't for what happened on our final night there. During our last day there, while we sat out and enjoyed the pool and company for the day, someone at the resort decided that they deserved the money that was in our safe more than we did. We had to contact security and fill out paperwork documenting the incident and rather than coming home with money, we unfortunately did not. I would highly recommend to double check your safes each time you leave to remember exactly what was in there and double check whenever you come back to the room to make sure all of that same stuff is still there. It may seem a bit obsessive but trust us, you do not want what happened to us, to happen to you.
Two final things... Approximately 12:30 PM EVERYDAY... Jamaican Jerk Chicken cart makes its way to the pools. MUST EAT!!! We had it everyday and actually were able to come home with the recipe for the Jerk Sauce. Cant wait to try it out! Also, it may seem a bit unordinary, but occasionally they have Hermit Crab Racing... MUST SEE!
