I stayed here with my husband for a week in August. The resort grounds are beautiful. There is a beautiful patio area with outdoor seating by the water. It's gorgeous at night. We saw sting rays at night swimming near there! This is also where the nightly activies are usually set up. You have access to St. James's pools and restaurants/bars. The main difference from, what I saw, is that St. James is considerably farther from the restaurants than the Wild Orchid.
The resort is only about 20 minutes from the airport which is great! However, Montego Bay is about 1.5 hours from Negril and 2.5 to 3 hours from Ochos Rios. So, unless you want to take a long car trip off the resort, there isn't much to do outside of the resort. We usually like to venture out into the local area for some shopping, but we didn't do that this time. The neighborhood outside of the resort didn't seem to safe or appealing, so we spent the entire week at the resort.
Here are my reviews of some other important parts of the resort:
Food: The good was good, not great. The jerk chicken cart is probably the best food at the resort. There are a bunch of different restaurants. The restaurants are good, but nothing special. The breakfast buffet is great though. Lots of stuff to choose from and omelletes made as you wait. One thing I thought that was odd what that there was no fresh seafood. I expected fresh seafood, but found none at the restaurants. Service is a little slow, but that's not a huge deal.
Bars: There are lots of bars. Some actually have top shelf liquor. Drinks are made strong and yummy! The swing bar is awesome! There are swings to sit on and sip on your drink. They also have bar stools for the non-swingers. The club they have, Desires, has good music for dancing at night.
Beach & Pools: The beach is beautiful. It is a little rocky, however. Nothing terrible or unbearable. The free water activities are great as well. We went kayaking and on the snorkel tour. The pools are good too. The bar at the pool is always nice to have. However, as we got into the weekend and the resort started filling up with people, it grew harder to get seats at the pool and the beach.
Room: I prefer oceanfront views. I asked for oceanfront, but we got an oceanview room. It was set back a little from the beach so that we have a partial oceanview and more of a view of the pool. A lot of rooms have the oceanview rooms and few with an oceanfront. You definitely want to be on the 4th or 5th floor for a good view. The room itself is nice. I asked for a few extra hangers a few times and none came. And room service/turn down service can be a little unreliable.
Activities: They do try to have alot of activities. There are a few different activities daily. However, sometimes the activities don't actually occur. I went to one once and the staff in charge of the event showed up 45 minutes late....
Overall, this was a good vacation!
