My fiancée and I stayed at the Secrets Wild Orchid from August 10-17, 2012. We have stayed at several all-inclusives and we always say we will write a review when we return, but we never do. This time, I had to make writing this review a priority, because our experience was nothing short of exceptional!!

We usually stay at 4 star all-inclusives, so I was very curious to see if the extra money that we paid for this 4 and ½ star resort would be worth it, and if we would notice what the extra ½ star was for. We certainly did notice some differences from all the places we have stayed in the past!
I won’t bore you with the usual things you will read in these reviews (what all inclusive means, the extra cash for tips, how many restaurants the property has-those things are typical whenever you stay at these resorts) Instead, I will tell you some things that made our one week vacation in Jamaica the best vacation we have taken to date!

Upon arrival, we were greeted with the customary drink and speedily checked in. Every room in the Wild Orchid, from the most basic to the most extravagant, has an ocean view. You may have a pool AND ocean view, but you will definitely have an ocean view regardless. You really cannot go wrong with any room here, so don’t waste too much time researching which type of room you will stay in. I did spend some time prior to booking researching the differences between the St. James and the Wild Orchid. From what we can gather, they are both equally as close to the beach, but the rooms on the Wild Orchid property seem to have a more modern décor. This we gathered through talking with other couples. We had a basic Junior Suite, and we had a breathtaking view. The room was modern, equipped with little touches like mood lighting and something called a privacy light (a unique twist to the “Do Not Disturb” sign- simply turn the privacy light on if you do not want to be disturbed, off if you want your room cleaned) The room had a separate compartment where your room service dishes can be placed for pick up at any point through the day, and a doorbell that could be heard from the balcony as you listened to the ocean waves (my fiancee is still making fun of me because I thought that was so cool) Oh, and 3 free porn channels, a very nice surprise…did I mention this resort is for adults only?? Lol

The beach is, as others have stated, gorgeous. There are 3 little areas- two closer to the Wild Orchid, one closer to St. James. One of the sections on the Wild Orchid side had a stingray and the other section had barracudas and a lot of cichlids. Bring your own snorkel gear and you will be able to see them and feed them (they are partial to the jerk chicken.) It’s like swimming in an aquarium! The St. James section is a bit murkier than the other two sections, but sealife free. There is waiter service on the beach and the beaches are strategically placed close to bathrooms, snack bars, and restaurants. And the best thing was- NO VENDORS ON THE BEACH!!

One of the things we enjoyed most about both properties was the layout of the place. My fiancée kept saying both properties were cleverly built, especially the restaurants which were all close to each other, and even though we shared them with the guests from St. James, there was NEVER a wait to be seated anywhere. Which brings me to the topic of food- here is where we noticed the ½ star difference. Every meal we consumed, especially for dinner, was superb. No need to detail every meal, suffice it to say that we were very pleased and definitely noticed an upgrade in the quality of food here as opposed to other all inclusives. Each item on the buffet table at the World Café had its own thermostat displaying the temperature in which the food was kept to ensure fresheness (I have never seen that before.) They DID have top shelf liquor, like Grey Goose, and beer like Heineken, but not in all bars. However, they did in most of the restaurants, and if they didn’t, they will accommodate you and go get it. There were water coolers set up all along the side of the beach along the pathway, so you could just grab one on the way to the gym or as you are going up to your room-no need to find a bar. There was also a coffee bar. Now that was a great touch because if you have done all inclusives in the Caribbean, you may have noticed that a lot of them DO NOT carry or make iced coffee. Beach towels were aplenty and no card was needed. Those were little touches in the service they provided that made us super comfortable and happy.

Now come the shout outs to the staff. I never understood why reviewers recommended this person for this or that, being that I would never remember to ask for a person by name once I get to the property. But in fact, it is the managers who read these reviews and the staff receive accolades and raises based on our comments, so if you can guys, write something for them. Mighty Mike was an awesome yoga instructor (right there on the beach) and make sure you see Darren for any kind of water sports (tell him the big Puerto Rican guy sent you, lol) The ENTIRE breakfast staff at the World Café were super friendly and welcomed us every morning with serenades and jokes.

Now, unfortunately I do have something somewhat negative to say. Our room was not stocked daily with toiletries. In fact, we once had to call down and have soap and shampoo brought up, as well as the daily activity schedule. We also noticed that the floor was not very clean, even though we had our room serviced every day. This was not something we complained about to management, but I felt it would be fair to warn people that we heard several complaints from other couples about this. It did not put a damper on our great experience!

DOs and DON’Ts
DO make sure you try their beef patties and vegetable fritters-YUM!
DON’T do the free snorkeling tour- you will see more fish while swimming
DO go the Desires, their nightclub- best DJ I have ever seen in an all inclusive!
DON’T eat the desserts at the restaurants during dinner. You will find better desserts at the World Café buffet…especially the flan!!!
DO the kayaking and catamaran- sooo fun!
DON’T expect sushi at Himitsu- there is NO SUSHI anywhere. DO NOT expect hot breakfast from the room service menu. Only bagels and stuff, unless it’s your honeymoon or anniversary. Ask for a champagne breakfast if so.
DO join the Secrets talent contest- the top prize was 4 free nights!!
DO take a walk on the beach at sunset..and stop to take pictures at the gazebo..hey, pretend you’re getting married while you’re at it…WHY NOT?? LOL

And the most important DO of all…DO take someone to any of the Secrets in Montego Bay that you love very much…I did, and it made all the difference ;))

This place is very nice. Everything is top of the line. Food was great, staff was great, and all around a great place. Preffered club is probably not necassary as the benefit is not worth the extra money. I would definatly choose Wild Orchid over St. James because of the location to the restaurants and events.

Room Tip: Preferred club is nice if you want more seclusion but is probably not worth the money.

To preface this review, let me lay to rest two frequent "complaints":
I researched this place for months before we booked. My concerns were the "Eco" controls mentioned which would shut off Air Conditioning at night, even shut off electrical outlets with no motion (sleeping) in the room, and bugs.
The "Eco" controls may have been a problem early in the life of the resort, BUT this has been fixed. Just be sure to set the room control panel to anything except AUTO, select your temperature, and no problem, this bit of information was cheerfully provided by the front desk. All electrical outlets are always active.
Since we visited in early August, there were NO BUGS to speak of, so no worries at this time of year.
Trip from the Airport, about 20 minutes, was fine, a free shuttle bus IS available at the airport, not sure why people pay for cabs ???
The following comments can be applied to Secrets St. James as well as Secrets Wild Orchid, they are essentially one resort...
We selected the Preferred club option, not an absolute necessity, but extra niceties and express check in were worth it to us, and we encountered NO time share selling or the like at all.
The room (3rd floor preferred) was as advertized, clean, everything functional, always well (re)stocked - perfect !
The Property and Resort facilities were top notch, definitely 5 star. Staff were always cleaning, trimming and arranging the beautiful grounds and public areas into true works of art. The resort was well maintained, very clean, which brings me again to the resort staff. We found the staff (all staff) cheerful, helpful, and extremely eager to please and make the guest feel comfortable.
Tipping was never requested, but always very much and politely appreciated.
People's tastes are of course subjective, but the food at the restaurants in my opinion was for the most part very good (massive buffet breakfast in fact excellent). I have cooked gourmet meals all my life, and believe I can assure you that again, no worry Mon ! Drinks were many and varied as you desire, and the strength of them is up to the guest, just ask !
Pools were many and beautifully kept, beaches were nice with white sand, snorkeling available right off the beach, water is a bit shallow further out, so coral was not too deep under the water, exercise care.
Entertainment was about what one would expect from a good resort. OK... if you want all night partying, craziness, circuses, casinos... then by all means go to Vegas. Contrary to some reviews, there are many excursions available, just go to the front lobby and ask.
Spa facilities were very good, well designed, clean and cheerful. Nice touches like the trays of citrus scented chilled hand towels and fresh squeezed juice in the fitness club were both impressive and welcome.
In summary, from the champagne greeting to the awesome, attentive staff, one cannot go wrong at Secrets Wild Orchid Montego Bay !

Room Tip: Sunset or Sunrise views are best from the higher floors.

My husband and I went to secrets wild orchid for our honeymoon. What a paradise! We wanted to stay forever. 24 hour room service, beautiful rooms, incredible scenery. Everyone there is so extremely nice and we feel as if we were waited on hand and foot. The views are spectacular! We got the swim up room and it was amazing to wake up everyday and get to sit on our porch, lay in our pool while still getting served drinks from the waitresses. The one thing we were worried about with an inclusive place was the food, but it was great!! There are areas to hang out with others, and plenty of space to have romantic, quiet time as well. Ricardo was awesome, bringing us our champagne breakfast and helping us with anything we needed. Loved the romantic dinner on the rocks/water and the shop/hang out area was great ;) Will definitely be returning!!

Room Tip: Swim up rooms are awesome!! If you want more privacy get a preferred reservation, you can still hang...

Are you kidding? This was the best resort I've ever stayed at! Everything from the champagne greeting to the pool cocktails to the five star buffet breakfast!!! I cannot believe what Secrets has to offer!!! Totally amazing! 5 star Restaurants without prior accommodations and without reservations! Wow! I sat there waiting for the bill and realize wow this is all included! No way!!!
Everyone was more than accommodating and gracious. We really appreciated the pool staff to name a few: Leo, Khadijah, Karen, and Ryan...
Jamaica has such amazing people who truly don't let anything bother them from the day to day rainy weather at times to the demanding guests.
I truly loved and appreciated being a part of their culture and inviting nature. We will be back yearly but I wish monthly, to be a part of this amazing culture and resort! There's nothing bad you can truly say about Secrets, they do it all 110% wholeheartedly just ask and they will accommodate!
Amazing!!!! Just amazing! Must have the jerk chicken cart! Delish!!!
Not even embarrassed to admit that I cried when we checked out to come home!
One love!

Room Tip: Just ask and they will accommodate! As said: a closed mouth never gets fed!!! The bitter unhappy r...

When we arrived to the Secrets Wild Orchid/St James resort every person on staff was very polite and welcoming, Kevin at the front desk is a great person to answer any questions. The rooms were excellent and very clean, and I just wanted to say an extra Thank you Keisha from housekeeping for the wonderful service and great attitude. Anytime that we need anything for the room the staff were right there to help with it. The restaurants on the resort were all excellent and the food was wonderful. The food served at the restaurants was superb, they were all five star quality. Aldane and Clarvon were great servers at the restaurants that made us want to go back even more. Also at the breakfast buffet making the greatest omelets was Alrick, who was very friendly and welcoming. At the bar that we frequented was a great entertaining and knowledgable bartender name Jahmar who can fix any drink for you that you want. I would recommend this resort to anyone who wants a wonderful experience with a friendly staff. We had never been to a resort like this and it made for a very very great experience. We will be making another trip here when we go back to Jamaica.

I read alot of great reviews on this resort so I was really excited to go here with my husband for a little romantic getaway...The cab ride from the airport is about 15 minutes and 30 bucks.First, we enter the hotel lobby at 2:45pm and after a long day of traveling we just wanted to get into our rooms. There is no lobby really, only a few tables with women sitting at them. There is really no air conditioning when you walk in so it was an uncomfortable wait. Our room was not ready, and then she told me she had a ground floor with twin beds. I told her we paid for a King bed with ocean views. We waited and eventually got our room.
We entered our room and immediately realized "Oh God its really hot in here" The air conditioning was on but it was very hot. We called the front desk right away and they said they would send up maintenance. When they arrived they "Changed the filter" and said that should do the trick.. NOPE. All of the rooms are like this. There is nothing they can do to make the rooms colder. It felt like it was 70 degrees with a fan on the entire time. We could not sleep and contemplated going to another hotel. If your like me and cannot sleep in hot rooms this hotel is not for you.
The air conditioning problem was not just in the rooms. The ENTIRE hotel is pratically without air conditioning. The elevators and hallways are dreadfully hot and not one restaurant has air conditioning. Most restaurants are half inside half outside and we sat inside on the first night and almost fainted. The room did smell a little musty. The jacuzzi tub in the rooms are nice, know why? 'Cause we filled them with cold water and sat in them before bed to cool off lol. How could you have a hotel in the hottest climate with poor air conditioning?
The food and liquor is pretty bad. Every restaurant you go to not only are the portions extremely small but it is like a combination of chef boyardee and hospital food put on a fancy plate. Most of the time we filled up on bread and basic things like salad because everything else was terrible. The italian restaurant- absolutely terrible. The japanese restaurant- we never got to try because they said it was book solid for the whole week. (Really?) The Oceana restuarant by the pool was gross, they had buffet food sitting out all day with flies on it.The breakfast buffet everyone goes to so it is packed and food is so so. The only food we thought was ok was the food service (we ordered sandwiches) The mini fridge in the room was not cold and it had 2 cokes 2 sprites and 2 red stripes. The alcohol is all cheap and tastes that way. The bartenders were, however, very good at getting your drinks. We ate from the jerk chicken cart everyone raved about, it was jerk chicken, nothing amazing.
The women workers mostly had bad attitudes, some rolled their eyes at us when we asked for anything. The men, however, were very nice. Those who treated us well were tipped, but the ones who were nasty obviously we didnt. And almost every worker asked us if we smoked weed. I get it, I'm in Jamaica and they smoke weed but even the lifegaurd was asking us? I mean come on. There is no casino, there is a small room with what looks like little video games.
Ok so the good things- The beach and pool bar make up for all the negatives, since that is really what you are doing mostly. Part of the beach is rocky but the rest is beautiful. The bartenders are very nice. The entertainment is very good, they have singers at night with a beautiful romantic backround. The hotel grounds are very romantic and they do try and make it very couple oriented. My husband and I tried to make the best out of it.
Next time I would rather book a hotel that we pay for our dinners so the food quality is better and listen to the reviews about the air conditioning.. Also, if you stay here I wouldn't leave the resort, it did not seem very safe.
