“Great Time with Friends”
Reviewed August 13, 2011

We thought it was a really great time. Leon at the pool bar in Wild Orchid side was a man of few words but made the best drinks in the whole place. Check in was okay... was surprised by how small the lobby was but it didn't really seem overcrowded. They try to get you to upgrade, but not pushy about it. We didn't as we just couldn't justify the additional cost for the minimal extra amenities. Glad we didn't as there was never an issue with getting lounge chairs at the pool if down by 10 AM and there were always, at all times of the day, plenty of open lounge chairs on the beaches (I use beach loosely). Our room was really nice. Took a few minutes to figure out the tub drain, but got it working. Beds were really comfortable. The non-preferred room service was pretty limited and not great, but I only had it a couple times anyway and both times anything would have tasted good... If you are with a group (more than 4), getting to dinner no later than 7:00 PM is an absolute must if you do not want to wait 2 hours... seriously! They have 1 table at each restaurant that seats more than 4 and they do not push tables together. (which brings up another point... did not matter to us as we're married... but did notice this would definitely not be a resort to come to if you're single looking to mingle... I would say at least 85-90% are honeymooners and couples celebrating anniversaries). Bourdeaux and Portofino are the best. If you go to the Asian and want to do Hibachi, make reservations ASAP when you arrive. We wanted to make reservations the evening we arrived and next available time was 4 days later. Reservations are required for the Hibachi part of the restaurant but not for the general dining section, or any other restaurant. Also, don't know his name as he was the chef at the grill next to us, but when making a reservation, request the guy that sings... he is hilarious! The other food in general was great, for all inclusive... you really need to keep in mind this is not the Ritz and you're not paying $100 per meal. The food here was better than a Dreams we stayed at in Dominican (cheaper to stay at) but not as good as a Riu in Cabo, which cost more. So, with all things, you get what you pay for as far as food goes.

As far as service speed goes, this is JAMAICA... it is slow here... always has been, always will. If you expect speedy, fast-serviced, service, probably do not need to visit a resort anywhere in Jamaica.

All-in-all, we would come back but we usually like to try new destinations before going back to a previous one. If they have a Secrets in Negril, we'd do that.

The piano bar (not the lobby piano bar) is fun; especially when the piano man starts singing for the sing-along. Picture karaoke, but with the whole place going at the same time... hilariously awesome!

For something really refreshing in the AM after night time drinks is snorkeling. Have to be down there at 8:45 but it really is refreshing. You don't see a lot of fish, but the coral is really interesting anyway.

Lastly, and I know this is a bit repetative on other reviews, but the jerk chicken cart (not in the buffet area, but the cart that goes along the sidewalk between the pools and beach) is an absolute must... every day available! Seriously, it is ridiculously good! (make sure you get extra magic sauce)

Room Tip: Try to get 2nd floor and above. All rooms have ocean view but on 1st floor, you have to look "t...

My wife and I planned a last minute get away and went to Secrets in Jamaica. We were very pleased with the property and the staff. The reviews are all over the place on the resort but overall it was a great experience. Within reason, a vacation is what you make of it. Many people expect $10000 a night service and food when they are paying $600 a night and it is not going to happen. With that being said I will hopefully help with some info.
Check in was a breeze for us. We arrived about 2pm and check in is at 3pm and we checked right in with no problems. We had room 2528 which is at Wild Orchid in the non preferred side. We were on the 5th floor and had a direct view of the ocean. Very pretty. The room was in good shape. We did have a couple of issues. There was a light out in the bathroom which they replaced quickly and the stopper in the tub which did not work, however that did not get fixed. We only asked once to get it fixed but it was not a huge deal for us. Other than that the room was great. The bed however was the best. I have stayed in a lot of hotels and resorts and I think that is the best bed I have ever had.
We spent most of our time at the pool. The pools were great. Very large and very well maintained. Plenty of chairs. People did not start claiming them until 8 or 9 in the morning. The pool bar was great. Keno, Phillip, and Leon did a great job keeping up. Everybody needs to try a Keno special. He would not say how to make it but it was a very good, STRONG drink.
On to the beach. This is where this property is lacking. I knew this going in based on other reviews and pictures. They did the best they could with what they had to work with. However, being from Florida, and some of the best beaches in the world, I am a little spoiled. It was very rocky in places and a very odd sand. The beaches are in segments around the property and is not good for walking. However, a very beautiful setting. I have stayed at Sandals Whitehouse and the beach there is considerably better. If the beach is totally the reason you are going, you may want to choose a different resort. Since we were not in it just for the beach, this was not a big deal to us. I almost forgot, if you are at the beach or pool, a guy comes around with a cart offering jerk chicken. It is definitely worth getting some chicken from him. Very good.
The food in my opinion was what you would expect from an all inclusive. Good but not great by any means. I think my biggest surprise was the breakfast buffet. It was definitely more than what I expected. We did not get to eat everywhere because we were only there 4 nights. For the most part a decent selection of entrees and service was pretty good.
As far as night life, I can't offer much. For most people, once you have spent all day in the sun and then eat dinner, you start to wind down. We did hang a couple of nights at the piano bar which was good however we never got to see the piano man. He is supposed to start at 10:30 but by almost 11pm and he still had not started so we left. We did stop at the theatre on one night and what we saw was pretty good. Better entertainment than we have seen at other all-inclusives. We did go to the casino room a couple of nights. It is a room with 10 to 15 slot machines. The first slot my wife put in $20 and took it to $60 and back down to $20 and she cashed out. The second slot she put in $40 and on the third spin she won $915. We decided to leave after that. It was great to win, however the entertainment value wasn't much because we were only in there about 15 minutes but I am not complaining.
We did some services at the spa. The spa is very nice. Great water circuit. The wife and I had a couples massage. After that she had a couple of more massages and was quite pleased.
Final thoughts. Even though it is an all inclusive and you are not supposed to tip, it will make your stay better if you do. Be sure to take plenty of small bills and take care of the bartenders, your housekeeper, etc. Especially those that are worth it. They deserve it and they will make your stay even better. We were not there long enough to do any excursions or water sports. We mostly hung out at the pool and took it easy. All in all a great resort and we will definitely return when we can stay longer.

Room Tip: The higher the floor the better the view.

I'm not a big fan of all-inclusive formats, but this is a newly built facility and does a good job making you comfortable. Friendly staff, good range of food choices. Top shelf liquor available at some bars. We took advantage of a special that made the trip very affordable. The spa there is beautiful and had a great hydrotherapy circuit. (My first time, but apparently something that my wife is very familiar with and she said it was very well done.) The swim up bars are a treat and offer a laid-back venue for socializing.

Rooms were clean, attractively decorated and had great soaking tubs as well as separate showers and a small refrigerator stocked with beer and soft drinks. Room service was included and had enough choices to be a viable meal option when you are tired. We hired Clive's Transport Service to handle our airport to hotel transfer and hired a taxi at the hotel to take us to town.

Internet access was good enough to use Skype. As one might expect, the wine list was not good. Bring your own wine if you care about wine.

My boyfriend and I try to take an all-inclusive trip every year to somewhere different. Jamaica was our destination and we choose Secrets because we stayed at the Secrets in Punta Cana the previous year and loved it.

After reading reviews we decided we wanted the upgraded amenities of the "preferred club," unfortunately when we arrived they were overbooked and had to stick us in a regular room but with access to the preferred side of the beach/pool, etc. and a free return stay for 6 nights for two in a preferred room. Hard to pass that up!

Although we didn't receive the in-room upgrades and had to figure out for ourselves how to get the preferred club key cards, we were overall every happy with this arrangement and will be happy to return next year for free.

The service at the resort was great for the most part, not as quick as Mexico, but it didn't bother us. Once the bartenders get to know you and you tip them a couple of bucks with your drinks you start getting fancier and stronger drinks.

The food was so so. Our favorite dinner was actually the Italian place which really surprised us both. We had the French place the first night and I really liked it, but my boyfriend wasn't feeling the best so he really didn't have an opinion of it. If you go right at 6pm you get seated faster and out quicker. All the desserts were pretty much the same at all the restaurants and not my favorite.

I really liked the coffee bar, a few sections but all pretty good. Jerk chicken was fantastic! The places open for lunch were ok, we preferred the buffet because you got in and out and back to the water quicker. Room service, not so great, the nachos were horrid, stale corn chips and watered down cheese. I think the burger was the only decent item on the room service menu.

Favorite drinks-dirty banana and the iceberg (red stripe with a clump of frozen margarita on top)

As far as the rest of the visit and Jamaica as a whole we loved it and would highly recommend it to especially to someone traveling out of the country for the first time (it was the least overwhelming/imitating airport we have been to and it helps that their official language is English!) The people were super friendly and the island was beautiful! Everyone should as least try it!

This property is beautiful, but quickly became referred to as "the base, or the compound." Although asthetically pleasing, if you want an island-feel of te real Jamaica, this isn't it. Very sterile environment, and many of the staff we spoke with were afraid to bring much personality to their jobs. It was a great place to enjoy some beach time and water, but no way you can tell what country you are in, so if that's what you are looking for, go for it! All the other reviews tell you the story... Long waiting times for understaffed restaurants. We even left one after waiting 45 minutes just to order, once seated. It would have been three hours to get fed! That's beyond a reasonable expectation, no matter the food. Drinks are premium at the hotel bars, but not outside, you are back to the rail. Who would have thought no Mojitos in a resort of this calibre? Room service after 11PM is nachoes, sndwiches, or a burger. - not nearly 4+ stars in any stretch of the truth.

If you are considering the montego bay area secrets is a must. Our room was very contemporary, comfortable, and roomy!!! There was a continuous party on the resort (we went during the Jamaica's independence week). The food was decent and there was something for all to enjoy. Pool was laid back and drinks were good!!!! I enjoyed the trip and wouldn't stay anywhere besides secrets!!!!!!!

First I would like to say how much I loved the property! Simply beautiful and well maintained (super clean, pretty landscaping and beaches) From your room to the hotel restaurants and amenities, the resort is very, very nice! It is wonderful that it is all inclusive, great drinks and food wasn't so bad. Breakfast buffet is the best. There are variety of restaurants, my favorite was the Italian. Make sure you make a reservation for the Hibachi house if you want to seat at the grill/table on the first day you arrive because it gets crowded. The French restaurant was good too. Small portions so make sure you order all the courses. The entire staff were wonderful, specially the wait staff. Waiters semm happy to do their jobs, always with a smile and singing. Loved the attitude, except for the host staff, some were rude.
If you go on a group, it is hard to get table for everyone (7 of us) since most people that go are couples, but they do try to accomodate you. The pool/beach was fun, Leonard is the BEST waiter! Super fun, Sue and Phillip were nice too! Beach was beautiful. Please tip the staff, they work hard, no matter if it is all inclusive!!!
Good prices at the hotel shops and night entertainment wasn't bad either. They try to do different activieties each night. The soca party rocked!!!
Definitely try the jerk chicken cart at the beach/pool area, very yummy! And also have some fresh coconut water and pinneaple. The guy is super nice!!!
Overall, great trip, had a great time! Secrets staff, keep up the good work! Ya mon! Jamaica, No problem!!! We;ll be back :)
