Another site that has an interesting history. You need to get a copy of "Montego Bay - Jamaica" by Pauline Reid to read all about it.

“All that Sugar comes with some Salt..”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 17, 2012

One of the things you have to resign yourself to when visiting Jamaica (as well as many third world countries) is that "higglers", who are people who will dog your footsteps relentlessly to get you to buy some trinket from them, are a natural and time-honored part of the landscape. Many Americans become either frightened or angry at this experience. The thinking goes "I am here on vacation and I don't want to be bothered", and rightfully so. However, these Jamaicans make their living bugging tourists, and they are pros at it. Having lived there for many years, I can tell you the best response is keep walking and dish out a really firm "no thank you!". If they continue to follow you, say "G'way with you!". If THAT doesn't work, tell them you will get the police, and the police, called "Red Stripers", are usually within easy reach in the tourist areas. Harbour Street is a typical place to experience the above, so be prepared. As often as not you, will get a smile from the higgler if you offer one. Jamaicans are some of the loveliest, most heartfelt and generous people you will ever meet anywhere in the world, so make the trip down Harbour Street, and enjoy!
