My husband and I are from NYC and we were very nervous planning a destination wedding for ourselves and 50 guests. However, our wedding was AMAZING and the staff at Half Moon could not be nicer. Our wedding group occupied 4 villas and we had our rehearsal dinner on the pool deck of villa 58, which ended up to be wonderful. I highly suggest booking that particular villa for catered events because of the large pool area. Our wedding ceremony and reception was at the Royal Pavillion - which was a perfect setting for us. We were thrilled from the first second we stepped on the property to the moment we left.
The resort is 50 years old, but they are doing a great job keeping it upadated. We noticed that they seem to spread out the renovations - so some guest rooms in the main hotel are much nicer than others. The villas are awesome for large groups - but the accomodations are not 5 star - keep that in mind. I would definitely say 4 star, though. Things like - normal size tub instead of a large one, two twin beds pushed together to make a king size, not enough power outlets, etc. HOWEVER - the service in the villas is unmatched to any other resort I have ever been to. Beyond 5 star quality with the villa service.
After the wedding, my husband and I moved into one of the Hibiscus Junior Suites which was beautiful. The accomodations in that room were top notch, but the service was very slow. (We needed to get the mini bar key which took them 5 phone calls over 8 hours to get it to us!)
The food for the catered events was superb. No complaints there. However, food at the restaurants was ok. The italian restaurant was mediocre - not worth it. Seagrape was good. Truthfully, we found that the more casual the food choice, the better it was. We actually enjoyed the room service food, la baguette, and the food at the beach bar more than the food at the pricey-er restaurants!! (Also, the pulled pork sandwich at the beach bar near seagrape was awesome.)
Being from NYC, we are very picky - and - we were very happy at Half Moon. We would definitely return for a future vacation.
