We celbrated our 11th wedding anniversary at the Half Moon and now look forward to returning in Spring. We loved everything about Half Moon; friendly staff, clean facilities, everything first rate. Exquisite meals at Sugar Hill restaurant, beautiful, updated, clean suite. Perfect balance of privacy and choice with numerous pools, beautiful beaches and luxurious spa.

We have twelve years experience vacationing in several Caribbean hotels (8 years with 2 young children) including Vieques (bug infested) & San Juan Puerto Rico (underwhelming) Ritz Carlton JA (food mediocre) 4 Beaches resorts- (excellent childcare but facilities run down), one supposedly "exclusive" resort in Turks and Caicos (a nightmare- refund on part of our trip- it was that bad) Atlantis in the Bahamas (commercial- long lines for buffet; non-personal cattle call).

Half Moon by far the most memorable. Personal attention, 9 and 7 year old kids kept very well occupied at kids club. We loved complimentary bicycles and fun dolphin encounter. Well done Half Moon.. we shall return for many years to come! We loved the staff- great service from Concierge; Candace, Housekeeper: Sophie, Beach attendant Tony. Sugar Mill Head Chef took time to chat with us before we left. Romantic setting, delicious food; should be #1 rated restaurant on the island!

We did not believe that the Half Moon resort could be even better but on our recent 7th visit, we think it was. The setting is the same......simply idyllic. To walk the beautiful 2 km sandy beech is simply heavenly. Every aspect of this resort is excellent but we would particularly like to praise the staff who always provide excellent service and are always so naturally friendly. It does not matter whether we are ordering a meal at the Sea Grape Restaurant, having a drink at the Swim up bar or arranging a trip with the concierge, the service cannot be faultered.

We always stay in one of the Hibiscus suites which are only 10 metres from the sea. To wake up with the sun shining having breakfast on the spacious balcony looking through the palm trees to the sea below is a dream.

There is also much to do on the resort with a 18 hole golf course (bunkers strategically positioned!!), tennis, horse riding, gym, spa and you can even swim with the dolphins.

We are now looking forward to our 8th visit. Another couple we met this time are arranging their 11th visit next July. I think that says it all.

We are just back from our 11th visit to Half Moon. For those of you who don't follow me at TripAdvisor, we married at Half Moon back in 2003 and go back every September to celebrate our September 2003 wedding. As with all the prior visits, the Half Moon resort and staff were fabulous to us again this year. We stayed in a Cottage 5, Junior Suite # 49, our preferred side of the resort as the suite is beach adjacent, literally 20 steps to the beach. The suite is wonderfully appointed with a king bed, a walk in closet, double sinks in the bath, a full size sofa, matching love seat, coffee and end tables, and bureau in the adjacent seating area. There is a wonderful beach view from the entire suite and more than enough room for the two to spread our things around. There is even overstuffed patio furniture to lounge on if you don't want to put your feet in the sand. See the attached pictures of Cottage 5 and it’s views.

The food at Half Moon continues to be excellent. For breakfast we enjoyed the buffet on several mornings with made to order omelets as well as several juices, pastries, fresh fruits, cereals, and a dozen other hot dishes of bacon, sausages, hash browns, etc and then, many local dishes of ackee, saltfish, and bammies, just to name a few. My personal favorite is the Smoke House plate, a bagel with smoked salmon, and smoked marlin. These items are simply delicious and lots of it. I wait all year for this one as I can't get smoked marlin here in San Diego. For lunch we enjoyed the extensive lunch menu at Seagrape Terrace which includes a couple of few of our "regular" favorites, the Rose Hall Club Sandwich and the Red Stripe Beer Battered Fish Sandwich (which is a huge piece of local snapper served on soft roll with seasoned french fries. There is simply nothing better than this fish sandwich and an ice cold Red Stripe beer, served on the patio at Seagrape Terrace just after getting back from the golf course. In addition, there is a daily special and always several appetizers, soups, salads, and desserts to choose from. There is something on the menu for everyone, even a fabulous cheeseburger if you need a burger fix and chicken fingers for the kids. For 7 of our 9 dinners, we dined at Seagrape Terrace, enjoying multi-course dinners with appetizers such as shrimp cocktails or crab cakes, then followed by a caesar salad (big enough to share), lobster bisque soup, and then an entree of either seabass, snapper, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or salmon, just to name a few of the wonderful choices. A special thanks is due for the anniversary cake the resort served us on 9/13, our wedding anniversary. It was a special evening shared with our friends from Kansas who celebrated their 10th anniversary, while this was our 9th. There is a picture of this cake, so thank you again Shernette, it was a lovely evening and the cake was delicious. On two nights we dined at Il Giadino, which continues to be elegantly decorated in Italianate and staffed by our friend, Glenroy, who served us at our post wedding dinner back in 2003. Glenroy and his trusted staff again welcomed us to Il Giardino and we were served excellent baked seabass and a lamb shank as entrees, wild mushroom risotto and caesar salads as starters or entrée accompaniments. The deserts at Il GIardino are excellent as well, especially the tiramisu and the special white and dark chocolate mousse available on one evening. Indulge yourselves at Half Moon, you can work off the calories in the morning at the fully equipped health club, or with off beach snorkeling, the kayaks, and water bikes. Attached is a picture of an eel we spotted while snorkeling off Sunset beach as well as a shot of the Hobey Cat and kayaks available off Sunset Beach.

We also visit Half Moon for the golf. Half Moon's Robert Trent Jones course was again, in excellent shape. From tee-boxes to greens, there was daily maintenance provided by some member of the golf support staff. It's a treat to play Half Moon and we played 8 of 9 days and with the usual lower occupancy of September, we enjoyed leisurely golf and were thrilled to play all 8 rounds with "our" caddy Cecil, who patiently provided us with swing tips on difficult shots, club selections and distances. He also read the greens to assist our play. With a short email to Spencer Edwards, the Director of Golf, Spencer ensured Cecil was going to be available for us and we were thrilled to see him and have him caddy for us again this year. We can't imagine playing golf without Cecil; he's terrific as was Steve who supported our new friend and golfing buddy Mike Ehlers from Houston. As a three-some we played 18 holes in between 3 and 4 hours, while playing from the white tees @ 6600 yards. Also, for those who want a tougher test of golf, it's 7100 from the back tees which will again be challenge to the US PGA, European, and local pro's who play the Jamaican Open at Half Moon this coming November 29th through December 1. Also, many thanks to Spencer for turning my slicing ball flights into a nice draw. His golf lesson was excellent as is his management of the entire golf facility and staff.

Nights for us are spent at Cedar Bar. It's beach adjacent and it's the gathering spot on September evenings and this year where we made several new friends from England and from Houston Texas. In addition, it's where we caught up with another couple from Kansas we've been meeting at Half Moon every year for the past 4 years. We thoroughly enjoy catching up with our new and old friends and exchanging the day’s events over drinks and then rum night caps. You've got to try special limited production rums from Jamaica's own Appleton distillery or from Chris Blackwell, both are exceptional. We highly recommend one of the all inclusive plans, as in the Golf Plan in our case. The Golf plan includes all food, beverages, golf fees, taxes, and tip, such that we enjoy every menu item and service without thinking about the budget. The Ultimate in Luxury plan, which we've used in prior visits, includes horseback rides and snorkel boats, as well as all food and beverages, taxes and tips. This year was all about golf so the Golf Plan was great for us. The horseback ride down to the beach from the on-site equestrian center includes a swim with your horse; it’s not to be missed and takes a couple of hours, leaving you plenty of time for the next activity or a trip to the fabulous Fern Tree Spa.

Okay so the amenities are first rate, the food and golf are great, but why do we visit year after year. It's the staff. We consider ourselves lucky to call so many people at Half Moon our friends. From the first bell cap who greets us a with welcome "home", to the general manager, the hotel and villas managers, reservation and front desk staff, restaurant and bar managers, the director of golf, to the many wait, bar, housekeeping, and golf staff, there are literally dozens of people who remember us from year to year and work tirelessly to ensure we have a pleasurable visit. This year however, the staff out did themselves as if "welcome home" greetings and top notch sevice such as setting up my "usual" Tanqueray and Tonics at the 19th hole and Cedar bar wasn't enough. Laurel's father passed away this past July and we were lucky enough to have him join us for our wedding and first Half Moon visit. He too, instantly feel in love with Half Moon and it's staff and with his recent passing, the resort supported our honoring him by helping us plant a palm tree near the 18th green and 19th hole bar over at the golf course. He loved golf and he loved his gin at the 19th hole bar, so this palm is a truly fitting tribute to dad. Attached are some pictures of the tree and plaque the resort arranged for us. Dad's palm is also near other palms the resort has supported for recent newlyweds and for two other families with recently departed members. We could not have been more touched by the support of the many resort staff that pulled this request together during our visit. So in closing, Half Moon, its staff and management are truly exceptional, you won't be disappointed. Also, think about a September visit. While its high season for hurricane's throughout the Caribbean, we've never experienced a hurricane in any September visit, so we wouldn't think about spending our anniversary anywhere but at Half Moon. So to Mr.Z., Andrea, Shernette, Paula, Spencer, Basil, Jackie, Jodey, Arlien, Merricka, Elijah, Brent, Glenroy, Andrew, Mr. Everette, Dudley, Lisa, Marvelene, Fitzgerald, Milford, Kamiecka, Donovan, Cecil, Steve, Janice, Karen, Ryon, Andrew, Michael, and Michael, it's see you next year for our 12th visit.
Warmest regards,
John and Laurel Allen

My friend and I travelled from London, England to LA - a slight detour for a couple of days. From there we travelled overnight via Dallas to Jamaica. I've been to JA on a few occasions, but have always stayed with family and friends. During my last visit, I vowed I would not go back unless I could stay at Half Moon and this was many years ago. My friend and I were sooooo excited on our arrival. We'd arranged to be collected from the airport, so it was great to be welcomed into the the Half Moon lounge at the airport. After travelling overnight, it was a relief that our journey was literate around 10 mins (if that) to the hotel. Our holiday was for two weeks, so it was a wonderful surprise to be upgraded to the Hibiscus Suite on arrival ... the rooms are great with their own private beach. It was peaceful and extremely relaxing. We only experienced the BBQ on the beach during our first evening - other than that we never ate in the hotel ... we wanted to go out and mingle with the locals. We ate at (I believe), Robbie's Kitchen, which is located on the grounds for the first couple of nights, but ended up walking down to "Scotties" up the road for other meals. I made full use of the gym (had to burn up as much calories as possible), whilst my friend took to walking around the grounds over to the other side of the resort to the golf course. Unfortunately, I didn't get around to doing the horse-riding on site - I done this offsite with Chukka Tours. The Tour Desk within the hotel was extremely helpful at arranging the excursions. Along with the horse-riding, I done the quad bike excursion (but beware - take extra clothing to change into in case you get covered in mud or drenched in rain as I did); Margaritaville Beach (OK), and Rick's Cafe - a MUST to watch the sunset - wicked! We hired a car for the second week, and had a driver who took us all over the island - absolutely fantastic - from Boston (jerk chicken) to Border (fry fish) to Fern Gully/Gullie; Appleton Rum Estate - we even got down to Hellshire Beach - unfortunately it wasn't the same beach which I remembered of years ago!! On the days we didn't have a driver I drove into town - the roads are nice and wide, (although the "Hip Strip road" could do with some maintenance), it's a breeze - a straight road directly into the town centre, so the hotel location was no problem. But on a different note, I don't think we could have chosen a better time to go, as it was during the Olympics - yes - we left London to go to Jamaica during the Olympics - and the island had a great buzz!!! I cannot begin to thank the fantastic staff at Half Moon, from the various people who ensured everyday our room was spick and spam to the lovely Khadene, Cecila, Orando, Richard (to name but a few as there were many, and to be honest - I'm more of a face woman than names so apologies to those who've not been mentioned) ... all the staff were really attentive and always smiling - and I don't know how they remember the names of all the visitors as they always said hello and if my friend wasn't with me, they'd enquire after her ... I miss them all!! The service we received was exceptional - felt absolutely spoilt. During our last night, my friend and I made plans that we will be returning, but this time for three weeks as two wasn't enough!! Jamaica is a great place to visit and Half Moon is definitely the place to stay ... you will not be disappointed!! Joanne - London, UK

Room Tip: Hibiscus Suite is large and has nice large bathroom.

I'm writing this review while sitting on the gorgeous beach at Half Moon Bay. My husband and I just finished a fabulous breakfast at the Sea Grape Terrace and now we're just relaxing, reading and about to go floating on the white logo Half Moon floats (the floats are a very nice touch)!

This is the perfect spot if you're interested in activities such as snorkeling excursions, trips to the water falls, day trips to Negril, golf, spa, sailing, ocean kayaking, horseback riding, swiming with the dolfins, zip line, etc OR if you just want to unwind and chill which is what we're doing. We did go snorkeling on the boat which was fun.

This particular time of year is their "off season" so there are only a hand full of guests which we love. The busy season is from about November to April. The weather could not be better-low 80s, sunny and an occasional afternoon rain shower complete with rainbows of course!

Food: the food is excellent! I'm a very picky eater when it comes to eating in other countries, but I have enjoyed every meal since we've been here. I was surprised to read some of the other reviews that gave the food low scores. I read the bad review about the Thai and Indian restaurant, but we have actually gone twice this week and it was awesome! The waitress is adorable...ask her to do her magic tricks for you! I was also surprised to have read some negative comments about the service..the service is fabulous. The staff even remebers your name...good morning Mrs. Lee how is your day, Mrs. Lee!!! Who doesn't like a 2 hour relaxing dinner - you're on vacation and on Jamaican time! Relax! We also went into town one night to the Pelican Restaurant...it was fine, but I prefer staying on the property. You must go to Scochies one day for lunch though...we took a cab, but you can probably walk if during the day. Also, the margaritas at the Half Moon bar are to die for! We were disappointed that the Sugar Mill was closed for renovations...this was our favorite restaurant from our last trip here.

Location: 2.5 hour flight directly from Atlanta. Once you arrive at the airport you go directly to the Half Moon "welcome room" to wait for the driver then it's a 10 minute drive. I hate going places where you have to drive hours after you land so this is perfect.

Ask to stay in the West Cottages...just steps from the beach with private pools. Free wifi all over property. We decided not to do the all inclusive this time which has been great because we don't feel compelled to eat three meals a day...usually we just do brunch and dinner or early lunch and dinner.

Half Moon is managed by Rock Resorts which is owned by Vail Resorts. We love Vail and Beaver Creek so it's no wonder that we love this place too!

This is our second trip and we're already planning our third. We've been skypeing our kids (16, 15 and 5 yrs) from the beach and of course they're desperate to be here...we told them they can come when they're old enough to drink a Red Stripe with us! However, this is a VERY kid friendly resort if you do decide to bring the rug rats...

Room Tip: They put us in the Habiscus suite at first, but we asked to move to the west cottages. This is where...

I love Jamaica and have always heard about Half Moon Bay but my concerns where its in Montego Bay and that is where I normally avoid staying. I have stayed at Little Dix Bay in the British Virgin Islands in 2005, Caneel Bay in 1994, The Royal Palms in Palm Springs in 2011 and have an idea of quality resorts just to mention a few. All the above are A+ resorts and I would go back again in a second. So staying at Half Moon Bay I had some reserverations but after doing my homework and reading the reviews and choosing between the Ritz Carlton in Jamaica and Half Moon I can say, WOW! I love this place, from the airport to check in and every where between the service, the people, the staff the experiance is 5 star. They wait on you hand and foot, everyone does there job to make sure you are taken care, we did the horse back ride in the ocean and you have got to do that on the resort, what a THRILL. The meals at the sugar meal where great, the breakfast is more than you need from eggs, salmon, fruit, bagels, croissants and more and of course the inclusive for all my beverages are wonderful.
My wife and I enjoyed daily runs through the resort which is 425 acres, realized that Richard Branson, John F Kennedy, Prince Elizabeth all have stayed here and the grounds are manicured to perfection. Now I must say nothing except Heaven is perfect and of course Half Moon has a few imperfections like anything else. We ate dinner one night at the India resturant on site and would not do that again, food was OK and the atmosphere was to bright for me.
As for the rooms understand this is a colonial type resort, it was built in the 50's and you cannot expect glitter but for me the Hibsicus suite that we where upgraded to was overlooking the ocean and with a wonderful balcony, seating with lounge chairs was perfect. the rooms and especially the bathroom are spacious and room service is very efficient. I must say, if you want the best spa treatment in the carribean with the utimate atmopshere this is the place. A couples massage along with use of the private pool and jacuzzi jungle like environment are wonderful and private. My wife and I went here to unwind, to relax, to chill and to be pampered without a crowd and thats what we got, so if you want recreation this place has it from their own golf course across the street, aerobic, spa, weight room, horse back riding, croquet, childrens services and day camps, bikes you name it, this is a resort that you never have to leave. We even had a driver to take us out for Blue Mountain coffee, Cuban Cigars and rum, And one last thing when you go you must have a driver take you to Scotch'es down the street, Red Strip beer $2.50 ea, great Jerk and Pork & chicken, adorable patio area, safe, clean and a grand experiance. The trip price is worth it and we stayed 5 nights so it will be worth your budget. My wife and I will go back to Half Moon Bay soon and I hope you do to. Enjoy and "No Problem Man!"

This year August 2012 we stayed at Half Moon for the third year in succession. We've been to some of the most highly regarded hotels from The One and Only Royal Mirage on Jumeirah Beach, Dubai, to some of the best on the Caribbean's ivory coast - but none quite matches up to Half Moon.

....The ambience, the staff, the attention to detail and the way they make you feel so special, makes it impossible for us to chose anywhere else to stay. Undoubtedly Half Moon also knows how to tantalise your tastebuds with world class Caribbean cuisine from dusk till dawn, never allowing your cocktail glass to go empty...

When you book in at Half Moon you certainly know you'll be taken care of. Our son loves it too because he gets to ride around the property with his new friends and he loves the freedom that the sprawling acres of beautiful gardens offer up as well as all the water sport activities to keep them busy.

This year my wife and I took it a bit easier and spent a bit more time at Half Moon's infamous Fern Tree Spa - amazing! Don't leave without trying it!

We're going to be back next year with some good friends who we know just don't want to keep missing out on the Half Moon experience.
