“A nearly perfect vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 13, 2011

My husband and I traveled to Half moon for a friends wedding. We were there 5 days/4 nights and had a wonderful trip. The staff overall was amazing. We have stayed in a lot of 5 star resorts but none with the level of customer service that we received here. We were upgraded to a cottage upon arrival and it was beautiful and spacious and about 5 steps from the beach. The spa was fantastic--beautifully designed and well maintained. Donna gave me one of the best massages that I have ever had. I highly recommend it.

Only three things underwhelmed me:
- The speed in which we were checked in (we waiting about 3 hours) and the resort was not busy.

- We also were not huge fans of the Sugar Mills restaurant. It was a very expensive restaurant and at no time did I feel like I was getting a meal/experience worth the price. (Salad was generic, shrimp were over cooked and steak was subpar.) I also did not appreciate the hostess not seating us when we arrived--she commented that we were 15 minutes early for our reservation (the restaurant was empty!)

- I also think a resort of this caliber needs better quality bedding. After laying in the sun all day--nothing would have been better then soft sheets.

Room Tip: The cottages were amazing. (we were in room 42)

The Pluses:
1. The Beach, dispute 2 1/2 days of rain (obviously not under the resorts control) The beach was great. When heavy surf washed flotsam and jetsam on the sand, the staff cleaned the beach as soon as could be. There were more than enough beach chairs and towels and lots of recreational equipment (Kayaks, paddle and sail boats, surf boards, etc.)

2. When the weather was wet, our balcony served as a welcome refuge. No rain, at times torrential as only tropical rain can be, reached our balcony.

3. The staff was friendly and efficient. One of our party suffers from a food allergy and those needs were met well. Room service was prompt.

4. When we arrived at the airport, the Half Moon transportation lounge was spacious and very comfortable. Transfers to/from the airport were efficient and timely.

The minuses:

1. Our rooms were 3 star at best and, at times, less than that. The bed was OK but not of 4 or 5 star quality comfort. The sofa and chairs were comfortable but not luxurious. The louvered doors on the ample closet space kept coming off their runners. The bathrooms were the worst with old, worn plumbing that looked as if it had not been renovated since the Reagan administration. Plastic toilet seats??!! Both of our bathrooms (we had two rooms) had leaks in the first 2 days. The towels were thin and scratchy.

2. The food was OK but choices were limited. The most surprising thing was that the worst dishes were the seafood. The shrimp in the shrimp cocktail and the crab meat in the crab salad were tasteless.

3. Half of the stores in the so called shopping village were shuttered. The rest appeared to be on their last legs. In the two hours we were there, we saw not more than a dozen visitors. The food on the so called Indian/Thai restaurant was ordinary.

4. The resort is too big. It can take several minutes to get beyond where you are staying.

In all, we had hoped to say "Wow" when we left but could only say "OK, not bad." We will probably not go back. There are better places to stay in the Montego Bay area.

Room Tip: Check you bill carefully. We had to dispute being double charged for the resort fee by both our boo...

Everyone in the family had a great time! The hotel is expensive but worth it. We stayed in the villa with a butler (Anthony), cook (Janice) & housekeeper (Annetta) and the staff were super friendly and helpful. At the end of the trip, they were like family. The kids spent the entire trip in the pool or at the beach while the adults imbibed. The people at the resort were friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. We actually stayed at one of the cottages the last time we were there & had an OK time. This time around, it was awesome! My boys keep asking to go back. I highly recommend it.

Room Tip: The villas, with staff, are the way to go. Everything is done for you. You just show up.

Great food and service and nice rooms, but an ok not super beach and a crappy gym like a Y, is. nice 3 at best barely 4 star resort tbt charges 5 star prices. The gym is nasty. But does have nice lighted tennis courts nd lots to do for families, with nice golf courses nearby.

Half Moon is truly an exceptional property. Its extraordinary physical beauty is surpassed only by the warmth and dedication of the staff. You will not be disappointed.

We spent five days there with our young daughter after Thanksgiving. We stayed in a deluxe suite near Oleander Terrace. It was perfect for families. The first floor has a large bedroom, with ample living space, and a small but completely adequate kitchen (stove, full-sized refrigerator, microwave, plates, utensils, etc.). There was a patio, with a table, chairs and a lovely view of not only the ocean but also some of the immaculately maintained grounds. Upstairs was a second bedroom, again with ample living space. The bathrooms were large, well appointed, and appeared to have been recently updated. There was a well-stocked and reasonably priced commissary near our room. We opted for the all-inclusive plan giving us full access to the three restaurants; the breakfast buffet at the Sea Grape on a terrace overlooking the beach is off-the-charts great.

As beautiful as our suite was, we weren't there much. The resort is enormous, with literally every possible activity one could conceivably want. Our daughter was attracted to the Children's Village, which was -- like everything else at Half Moon -- spotless and well equipped. We did not take part in any of the formal children's programs, but we met several of the staff. We were impressed. Another hit was the Equestrian Center. She had a pony ride, but they are amply equipped for more advance adventures, including rides on the beach.

There are 50+ pools on the property, but most of them were connected to individual villas. We had a nice pool near our room (with an adjacent bar and terrace overlooking the beach), and there is another large pool, with a swim up bar, near the Hibiscus Suites. Adjacent to that is a unique feature: a large lap pool. There are several beaches, all well staffed. The beach near the main entrance has various water sports options (sea kayaks, paddleboats, snorkle equipment). There were ample beach chairs and beach towels at all the beaches and the pools. At least when we were there, you could have some of the beach areas completely to yourself.

The list of other activities goes on and on: tennis, golf, mini-golf, volleyball, badminton, a dolphin lagoon. We are runners and this place is so enormous there is more than enough room to get a very decent workout without leaving the property (run through the tunnel under the road to the golf course to get some really good miles). The fitness center is absolutely first rate. However, perhaps the best thing to do is simply taking a walk to soak in the beauty of the place (there is a seeming army of groundskeepers deployed everyday).

Indeed, there is so much to Half Moon that previous posts quibbling about the lack of flat- screen TVs sorely miss the point. We didn't even think of turning on the (perfectly suitable) TV in our room and, in my opinion, you'd be nuts to do so. Thankfully, you won't find a TV in any of the bars on the property (although the English Pub in the adjacent shopping village has some). What you will find is a special place that will be hard to forget.

All that said, what truly made our visit memorable was the staff. From top to bottom and in between, they were welcoming and accomodating in every way. We happened to run into the hotel manager early in our stay. Thereafter, she went out of her way to greet us by name and to make sure everything was ok (even sending cookies for our daughter one night). Our housekeeper was incredibly sweet and made sure she worked around our daughter's nap schedule. Literally, every staff person we met (some of whom had been there decades) could not do enough for us.

We met several other guests who had been to Half Moon many, many times. It doesn't take long to understand why. We hope we are able to return soon.

We just returned from a 6 night stay at Half Moon. It was our first visit to this property although we had stayed 8 years running at the Ritz Carlton next door. They upgraded us to a lovely room in the West End Cottages right on the beach, a nice gesture for sure. We booked the Half Moon plan which included all our food and beverages, transportation to and from the resort, and a spa treatment. The all-inclusive is the only way to go since the food and beverage prices are quite high. We liked pretty much everything about the Half Moon--friendly staff, nice ambiance, wonderful spa. The place where the property fell short was in the food and wine. If you like quantity, you'll love it! The portions were quite large. In fact, my husband and I often shared appetizers or salads. The main courses, in addition to being large, were rarely served hot and were often way over-salted. Even though the Sugar Mill is their signature restaurant, the best two meals we had were at the Italian restaurant, but even there, it was way too much food and everything was over-seasoned. We are not much for the hard stuff when it comes to alcohol, but we are big wine drinkers. The wine by the glass choice was pretty bad. You could buy wine by the bottle, but it was astronomically priced for what it was. Plus, we feel if we're paying for an all-inclusive, we shouldn't have to spend extra money to get decent wine. That said, we would probably return. The Half Moon has 2 miles of beach, which we loved, and it was great going right out the door onto the beach. We didn't let the weather stop us from enjoying our time there. We had quite a bit of wind and little sun for 3 of our 6 days, but you can't do anything about the weather but make the best of it. And we did.

I stayed two nights at Half Moon over the Thanksgiving weekend. I needed some “Me” time and I could not have chosen a better place. From the time of reservations to leaving I was treated well by everyone. Kevon took me to and from my room, John and Fitz at the bar, Audrey & another young lady took care of my room and Jordan and others at the restaurant were just wonderful. Wow!!! What a room? was my response when I saw it. Located right on the beach, it was spotless and cozy. Lying in bed I could listen to the ocean and that sure was a welcome treat for a good night’s rest. I went to the gym the next morning and was surprised to see the updated equipment. I stopped by the dinning room for a wonderful Jamaican breakfast, which was out of this world. The ackee & salt fish, banana, yam, fried dumpling and lots of fruits were more than enough for an empty stomach. Want a place to get away? Want to be treated like royalty? Don’t guess!! This is the place to be. You’ll never regret it. I’ll be coming again soon.
Thanks everyone for a job well done!!!!

Room Tip: By the beach is great
