A taxi drove us to the “secret side” of town near the Secrets Resort for our dinner destination. The Houseboat Grill is on a quiet bay inlet. The restaurant is actually on a boat about 20 feet out in the water. The boat was stable but I could feel a very gentle rocking. We rode a raft to get out to it - pretty cool!. We were seated up on the second floor where we could watch the sky change color. The food was good. I had grilled calamari as an appetizer and mahi-mahi for the main course. My girlfriend had a salad and the chicken. Everything was ok (the chicken was the best), but pretty boring. The food was trying too hard be upscale, but without real backing. I was surprised that there was very little attention to typical Jamaican flavors (the chef, instead seemed to be running in the opposite direction). I'd bet at least one entree could be created that would be a tweaked version that gives a nod to a local dish. The desserts, however, were great! The chocolate souffle and banana cake were excellent. What made the restaurant, however, was the ambience. We enjoyed watching the sunset over the water as we ate on a boat. The experience was pretty spectacular. The feel of the restaurant made this evening perfect capper to a great trip.
