“Changes in Policy and accomodation levels”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

I had previously rated this quaint hotel very well. But upon my return they have made several changes. First, they are renovating half of the hotel. That is good, but the rest of the property is terrible. I had cold showers three days in succession and when I complained, they said "if it happens tomorrow let us know"! Well it happened twice more. Also, they have instructed to staff to require positive ID for all charges, even when they know you very well. Ridiculous. Finally, they have changed the rules on cigars. Cigars and Jamaica, and Rum are a tradition that goes back a century here. Not all of the sudden, after many many years, it is you must go outside to smoke your cigar, there are no outside bars, or even seats with ashtrays. It does not feel like it used to as far as accommodating the customer. I checked out and will spend my remaining 10 nights somewhere else.

The Terra Nova is a landmark. In Jamaica's no longer elegant and chic capital city, Kingston, the TN is located on a manicured lawn, surrounded by greenery, tropical and otherwise, buffering the noises of the big city. It is the Great House and its terrace and extensions and outbuildings. It feels civilized. It moves slowly, trying for majesty or maybe just being Caribbean. A pianist plays by the charmed u-shaped bar every evening, just off from the upholster chair-filled lounge and a step away from the two dining room, the open air one on the columned terrace [go there, look at the koi pond and the orchids suspended above it] and the more formal interior dining room.
There are four suites, each unique, and they are doozies. And so is their price. But someone is often using them. This is, after all, the house in which Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records [read: he who introduced the rest of the non-Caribbean world to Soca and Reggae] grew up. Tradition is here for Jamaicans with Wherewithal.
I like the menu - some Caribbean, some healthier choices, a bit of comfort food with style. And an excellent Chinese restaurant is around the corner in Orchid Plaza. East, Tamarind, and other interesting Jamaican versions of ethnic cuisine await a short taxi ride away at Marketplace.
5 minute walk brings you to Devon House, a great house now notable as it can be toured but quite the eyebrow raiser in its day. It was built by a black entrepreneur in a day when it was not readily believed a black man could have enough money to do so. Legend says the British Governor General's wife was so shocked, she insisted Lady Musgrave's Way be constructed so she did not have to look at it ....
The staff is usually accommodating, although there are a few notable prima donnas. The majority of smart and kind and helpful staff make up for the few - and leave me with the urge to return again and again.
I love the Thursday afternoon High Tea. And the TN Friday Seafood Lunch Buffet is well known. But the most 'famous' feature is the incredible Sunday brunch -- unequalled: Caribbean delicacies, gorgeous tropical fruits, fantastically tempting sweets, seafood in more forms than one can say, meats, fish, vegetables, pastas, of course rice and peas. And then the expected components of brunch. Plus, the Who's Who of Jamaica come, so the people watching is superb.

Room Tip: The holiday decor is very like being invited to a Great House --- lighted palm trees on the grounds...

My family and I went to Jamaica for my grandmother's 100th birthday back in July. It was a week long celebration and Terra Nova was the last place we were staying at. When we arrived to check in (late check-in) it took them over 40 minutes to tell us that we had no reservation. I turned on my phone from back home to show the email confirmation that we got from them with the confirmation number and total cost. The front desk personnel told us that since we did not answer the phone to confirm our reservation they gave it away and now there were no more rooms...upset is an understatement. We could not answer the phone because we were already in Jamaica and we did not have an international plan. So we asked what we were suppose to do and they had no answer for us but to say that we could talk to the GM the next morning. Luckily my aunt had two rooms to her name and we just stayed in one of them. When they talked to the GM all he said was what would you like me to do and just gave us a one night stay free. The hotel is nice but has a real plantation feel to it and the breakfast is absolutely amazing if you like Jamaican food. Overall the place is nice but the lost of our reservation with no help really put a bad taste in our mouth about ever going back.

Room Tip: Forget the room they are all nice. Just make when they call to confirm you are able to answer or the...

In the city but it just doesn't feel that way. the ambiance was delightful and the staff is great, friendly and very polite...breakfast is awesome..spent my birthday weekend here and at breakfast they caught me by surprise when they brought a yummy slice of cheesecake along with rendition of Happy Birthday sung by the waiters...really sweet place and i'd definitely visit Terra Nova again

Room Tip: Higher floors are recommended

Apparently this hotel only has suites. We had a conference dinner in the marquee and were not impressed with the food. There was a delicious pumpkin honey soup with cinnamon croutons, then after that the food was not good, nor did we have our coffee at the end!
On Sundays the hotel does a Brunch from 10-4 at a little over $10 per head and there is no limit as to how much is eaten. There was a very wide selection to choose from, beautifully laid out and decorated, starting with the salad bar, then the meat and fish sections, finishing with the desserts which were very colourful and beautifully laid out. The place was full and there were three birthday parties going on, for which the steel band outside the marquee played happy birthday, but the band was playing all the time - and it was pleasant music, not just a cacophony of sound. Unfortunately we were not impressed with the food, but others obviously enjoy it. People arrive and depart all the time so I have no idea how many are catered for.

I travel to Kingston frequently and stay at one of these two hotels. In my opinion the rooms at Spanish Court are nicer, newer, more up to date, etc. But the food at Terra Nova is much better. Even something as simple as coffee - the coffee there is wonderful, the buffet on Wednesday nights, the afternoon tea, any item from the menu... spectacular. They have beet salad that is truly yummy. The rooms at Terra Nova, although they are outdated, are well sized, clean and nice. They could do a few things to improve the rooms. 1. In room safe; 2. ditch the old bedspreads and go modern with the white linens. The staff is friendly and accomodating too. Hard to say whether one is better than the other since they both have some excellent qualities and some drawbacks. You have to decide whether the food or the room is more important...

Room Tip: The rooms on the bottom floor can get noisy and currently there is a jack hammer that starts up ever...

Had a great stay and this beautiful hotel. Have never seen my wife so happy. The staff was excellent the rooms were great and the Sunday brunch was the best meal on earth. We stayed at the Ritz Carlton later that week in Mobay and the food was not nearly as good. The desserts are the best on earth. The furniture is old and beautiful. The staff is very friendly but not annoying.

Room Tip: For a cheap meal at night late check out the casino.
