“Black River Crocodile Adventure: Worth Every Penny”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2010

Along Jamaica's South Coast
We decided to get off the resort and try something new and exciting. Island Routes had a tour called the "Land of Wood and Water". It was a tour of the Black River that came along with a crocodile adventure.

Comfortable and Safe
Island Routes only uses licensed and insured companies to provide its excursions, so we always felt totally safe and comfortable in our air conditioned van, as we drove to Jamaica's south coast toward our Black River croc adventure.

Are We there Yet?
We drove for about an hour, until we reached the town of Black River, located where the Black River flows into the Caribbean Sea. The Black river is Jamaica's longest river and is a fantastic place to see many types of animals, such as Egrets, Cranes, and of course crocodiles. In fact, the Black River is the main crocodile area in all of Jamaica. The river got its name because of its dark color which is caused from the tannins that stain the water, not from pollution. In fact, I did not see any signs of pollution anywhere in Jamaica.

The Crocodile Hunter
Our tour began at the mouth of the black river where it flows into the Caribbean Sea. I think we had the best tour guide that was available, because he was entertaining, and as you will read, and see, did some extra things that we were told the other tour guides won't do, because it is too dangerous! We were now all on the boat heading up the Black River in search of Crocodiles. Our guide did point out some Egrets and some baby crocs that we saw while we were still getting started.

Looking For Crocs!
Well the baby crocodile was cute, but we didn't go on this tour to see a baby crocodile, we were looking for big crocodiles! Our guide took us up river quite a distance until we reached a split in the river. The area to the left was the part of the river that flowed down from the mountains, and the water to the right, was where the Crocodiles tended to congregate. It wasn't long before we saw a large Crocodile lying in the sun on the river bank. We slowed boat and came to a complete stop. What happened next was so unbelievable!

WOW! Patricia the friendly Crocodile! (If you have food)
I want to remind everyone that we were in the wild. We were not at any crocodile farm, or zoo, we were right in the middle of the Black River. All of a sudden, this crocodile, our guide called "Patricia" started swimming toward the boat. While it was swimming, our guide put his hand in the water and was calling the crocodile, saying "come, come, come, while splashing the water with his hand. When she came close to the boat, he put some chicken skin in the water and the croc suddenly lunged for the food with a huge splash! Then he let us pet the crocodile as she came right next to the boat. For some great pictures of our encounter with Patricia, check out the pics I posted.
Our guide left Patricia and showed us a couple other regulars, and called them over to the boat, but told us that we could not get that close to the others, because they had a tendency to jump at the boat, or any hands and arms that were hanging off the boat. YIKES! Here is a video of another croc that he called over to the boat.

A Great Lunch
It was a great time to interact with the crocodiles in their own environment. When we arrived back at the dock, we were greeted with an authentic Jamaican lunch! We all enjoyed it very much and they had a very nice eating area there that was comfortable. The tour was a great deal, as we got to go on the croc adventure, have lunch provided, and then it was off to the Y.S Falls!

“Very Scenic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2010

My husband and I (in our early 30's) took the river cruise as part of a tour that also included YS Falls and Appleton Rum Factory. Our cruise down the river only included our tour group which was a total of 8 people, so it was nice and intimate. We did pass other pontoons that were loaded with people so I'm glad we weren't stuck on one of those. We were able to see about 4 gators, it is nature and no Disneyland so you can't expect to see them in certain spots all the time. Our guide was funny and knowledgeable about the area but he knew when to be quiet and just let us enjoy the scenery. We thought they were joking when the guides said we could get out and swim but turns out they were serious. We didn't have our swim gear on yet so we didn't swim. Long, story short, it was well worth it; we learned about the area and saw some pretty wildlife and scenery. It was really relaxing in the mangroves too.

“Instructive, beautiful, sooo funny!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2010

When on vacation in Negril, we took a day trip to St Elisabeth in order to do the Black River Safari and the YS Falls! What a great idea we had! The "cruise" is a ride, driving you in the beautiful mangrove of the black river. You will meet a few crocodiles, birds and such a wonderful landscape. The boats are not to big, so our group was only about 20. It was perfect. The guide was really funny and instructive. We were impress how Jamaican people knows they history, they nature, ... He made us laugh a lot about us being the best food for they crocodiles friends as we are not as spicies than jamaicain people are! At some point, he stop the boat and suggest us to jump in the water. First, everyone was watching around, thinking he was joking until he did himself... So, we just thought "why not"? And almost everyone jump in this refreshing water for a few minutes... And guess what? No one has been eated by a crocodile!! ;o)

“Relaxing but not a lot of crocs.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2010

We took a JTL tour from Montego Bay to black river on Nov. 17, 2009. It was a long ride to Black River, I think over 2 hours of twisting turning bumpy narrow roads. Our tour guide and driver was informative and fun and It was great to see the real Jamaica that you don't see at your resort. Once there we got on the pontoon boat. The driver/guide told us a lot of stuff but wasn't overly friendly. We was only able to see 1 croc, but at least we did see 1. It was relaxing and the scenery was beautiful. After the ride our tour included lunch at a small restaurant nearby. It was very good. Would recommend if you like nature but not so adventourous.

“Crocs weren't hungry...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2009

I wanted to do the Black River Safari Cruise because I was hoping to see some new and different birds while in Jamaica. Bah humbug. This adventure was a bust for that as the only birds I saw were the same ones I see at home all the time.

So the boat ride was a bust for my birding. It was however a nice ride. Our guide was personable and funny. He knew a lot about the flora and fauna.

The trip up the river is slow and relaxing and the scenery is nice to look at.

We went later in the afternoon and the crocs didn't seem to be hungry. We saw several but none of them approached the boat for food.

An unexpected highlight was the chance to get out of the boat and climb around through the mangroves. That was kinda cool and different.

All in all I don't think I'd do this again. It was a bit boring.
