Nothing can prepare you from the spectacle offered from the top of the citadel a good 1000 m above sea level . Even the access itself there rewards you with nice scenery and friendly people.
The citadele itself is impressive with solid construction and a rich collection of canons. Is reason to come to Haiti.

Amazing . The history and culture you find here is truly amazing. The Tourism group and government are making it possible to rent rooms in the Fort in the near future. Fantastic place to stay in a historical Fort. You can ride horses up the steep roads or walk and feel like you deserve anything you want to eat as you have burned one million calories.
Stop in the shops at the base and enjoy the culture of the live bands and women and men in native costumes. A must do

I have been many times in the last few years and each time I am struck by the beauty on the way up. The valleys and mountains viewed on mules and greeted by locals who live along the path. The selling may seem pushy but a polite and firm no usually does the trip. It makes for a long day but you can also drive up most of the way and walk as another option. It is a must see! Get a local guide to brief you on the history while on the way up.

We only visited the lower fort, as the road was out to the Citadel, but had friends go the next week. Well worth the trip.
