This is a must do if you are in Cap-Haitian-Milot area. This is a marvelous and historical site. You will miss out on a great experience if you skip this attraction.

I studied a bit of Haitian the Haitian Revolution (which is really the world's revolution) but it was so amazing to actually see the Citadelle and have a knowledgeable tour guide who helped us negotiate prices with the vendors.

I recommend all to see. If you are in the Caribbean or the Western Hemisphere (or anywhere in the world) than I hope you will make time to see this amazing building that serves as a reminder of human perseverance and desire for freedom.

The Citadelle is a fortress in northern Haiti constructed after the successful slave rebellion against the French. The entire structure was built by hand, with stones, cannons and mortars hauled up the steep mountainside to the top of the highest mountain in this part of Haitl. The construction took 14 years and cost over 20,000 Haitian lives. It is the largest fortress in the western hemisphere. Views from the top are spectacular. The trip up is strenuous if you walk, but you can also ride a horse or donkey to the top. Admission is $5.00. The only downside to the trip is the horde of Haitians hounding you on the way down to buy souvenirs.

Listen, if you are coming from Athens or Rome or Angkor and are expecting the same, you will be unimpressed here. But, when you consider where you are, how it was built during the point in history that this place was built, impressive is a very aptly named quality.

While the donkey ride up may not be loved by all, I thought it was quite okay and not scary. The worst part of this trip was being accosted by all the locals wanting to be your guide and/or horse renter. This can be somewhat avoided by stopping at the Palais Sans Souci just outside of Milot and picking up a guide there where you can negotiate solely with him and direct him to handle all of the touts at the bottom of the Citadel.

The structure itself, I found to be impressive and the various colored mosses on the stone faces gave wonderful pictures. Access is almost completely open and you are free to climb and roam at will. Do note that there are steep drops 360 degrees and young kids will have to be watched closely.

The views around the countryside and neighboring mountains are truly fantastic and I struggled to find a comparison in my mind, but I would say parts Rwanda and Uganda; which is a compliment...

All of the artillery is still there, most in original condition.

All-in-all, this is one of the most impressive things you can visit in Haiti and it surpassed what I thought it was going to be based on what locals described and pictures I saw online.

Once you make this trip you will not forget the view. Nice and cool and the view is majical. You see all the way back to CAP and beyond. The history is great and there are so many cannons and cannon balls it makes you aware of the potiential of what the foor was all about.
