“Guadeloupe Serenity”

Sight unseen, our son and his wife, who live in Paris, made the reservations for us after doing research on line. All of us were thoroughly pleased by the Hotel Amaudo - quiet, gorgeous views, wonderful breakfasts, and the managers are delightful.

Room Tip: We were in Room 10 which we highly recommend.

When we were planning our trip to Guadeloupe, we reviewed in detail the Trip Advisor reviews for determining our hotel. And, it was a good decision -- all the excellent comments you read here about the Hotel Amaudo are on the mark, particularly those on the proprietors, Francois and Betty.

Everything about our week was superlative. The view from our room (#10, which we highly recommend) was absolutely gorgeous with the three islands (Dominica, Maria-Galante and the Isles de Saintes) in the distance. Maid service is very efficient. We enjoyed the pool and made good use of it on the afternoons that we did our local traveling. Eat the breakfast at least a couple of times -- great food and environment.

We have traveled extensively over the past ten years and we can easily opine the Hotel Amaudo was the best for relaxation and just plain fun. And, it's literally because of Francois and Betty. We don't speak French but that was not an obstacle in our communications because of their exuberance and charm. Take a French phrase book and try to speak some with them; you will have a wonderful time. (You will especially want to follow Betty's advice on restaurants and Francois' on Island travel.)

We're already planning a return trip to try to get to the outlying islands and we will stay at the Hotel Amaudo while doing so.

Room Tip: All rooms seem good but we especially loved the view we had from #10.

The hotel
Everything is true; the rooms are clean en nicely decorated, the view is outstanding (all rooms have the same view), the infinity pool is lovely, the serenity and the delicious breakfast (especially the fruit plate). The French (speaking) owners are very friendly and do anything to make your stay comfortable. This was one of the best hotels during my holiday on the French Antilles and Dominica. There are a two points which could be improved; Wifi doesn't work very well in the hotel. Although the hotel has several networks, all networks didn't work or were very slow during my stay. The shower screen was a bit rusty but this is just a minor detail.

Car
The hotel is situated a few kilometers away from St. Francois (actually between St Anne and St. Francois). You definately need a car when you stay in Amaudo. The hotel has a free parking place for every room. I hired my car from Jumbo Car. They have an office in the airport and they were the cheapest I found. I booked my car 6 months in advance via internet and had a nice deal.

There is a lot of traffic on Guadeloupe and in the rush hours you will have a lot of traffic jams in the neighbourhood of Point a Pitre.

St. Francois/St. Anne
St. Francois is a nice town with two nice dining areas; the port and the marina. In the port you will find restaurants of a higher level than in the marina but the marina has a more cosy atmosphere and a few shops too. St. Francois has several big supermarkets. In St. Anne there is a small market with nice souvenirs and clothes/bags on the boulevard. To my opinion the dining options in St Francois are much better than in St. Anne.

Route de la traversee (RD23)
Is a nice road on Basse Terre. You will cross the national park from east to west and will see a waterfall. Several hiking routes are starting alongside this road. I took this road on my way to the botanic garden of Deshaies; which was to my opion a bit too commercial. I definately prefer the botanic garden of Martinique (Balata).

Room Tip: All rooms have more or less the same (fantastic) view but I liked my room on the first floor.

This is a select, calm and well run hotel, with just 11 rooms, all with sea views. The outlook is stunning; breakfast on the terrace overlooking the infinity pool and ocean(though pricey at 13 euros per head) was always a lovely start to the day .( unbeatable plate of 9 varieties of fresh fruit, yogourt, croissants, pain au chocolate, buns, coffe/hot chocolate , juice)
There were always ample sunloungers ( rarely used ) and poolside towels available).
A rental car is essential as it`s 5-10 mins to Saint Francois.
Thoroughly recommended.

Room Tip: Views from bedrooms upstairs have a marvellous view from their spacious balconies.

We stayed here for a week in November - it was perfectly wonderful! Betty and her husband are most accommodating and helpful. You will need to rent a car as the Hotel is a few miles from Saint Francois but it is certainly worth it .... a wonderful oasis and provides a great home base from which to explore the island. Clean rooms, comfortable bed, beautiful pool, delicious breakfast, great view! We highly recommend this Hotel!!

Living with a high level quality engineer isn't always easy when you're on holiday. Normally, I look for the views, levels of professionalism in staff, food and cleanliness while my husband notices aspects of the building, plumbing, bed comfort and lighting... and frequently grumbles.
However, we were both entirely happy with our stay at Amaudo Hotel.
The owners are a delight. The care with which everything has been installed and maintained is outstanding and they are able to quickly help and advise from a place of confidence. The two buildings are freshly decorated and well equipped. The balcony with its fridge and comfortable chairs was a pleasure to find.
The electronic gates give a sense of security to the environment and the planting is well thought out..
Finding the hotel is tricky. Although the owner sends good directions in his acknowledgement, it is difficult to turn off the main road, especially at night. An illuminated sign or white block by the road side would be helpful.
Sadly, there is no restaurant at the hotel but the breakfast was perfect with a wonderful fruit plate of the best local produce and delicious local coffee.
The photos represent the stunning views and the clean, warm pool but the reality is even better.

Room Tip: There are only ten rooms, all have good views, so book early if you'd like to stay here. Bookin...

When we found ourselves stranded for accommodation because of a tropical storm, I contacted Hotel Amaudo by email. I received a quick, detailed response which restored a bit of calm to a chaotic day.

We arrived at the hotel and was greeted with warmth and a supportive ear by the hotel management. We were quickly shown to our room, which has a view of the ocean. Ironically, the manager apologized for giving us the most limited view in the hotel, but we thought it was really great. The management received our children with open arms.

The room is large and tastefully decorated. The bathroom is really big and just perfect. There is a smallish outdoor patio with beautiful patio furniture, a small fridge and a shelving unit. The closets in the bedroom have lots of room and there is a security box.

Our room, located directly beside reception on the first floor, had two large beds so fit the four of us comfortably. We were not bothered by any noise from the reception. In fact, the hotel was booked and we didn't see another guest during our 24 hour stay.

Now the pool... gorgeous! An infinity pool set in a nicely landscaped are. There is lots of very nice patio furniture, but like I said, we had the place to ourselves. We also went back at night to sit out and enjoy the stars.

We weren't there long enough to enjoy the breakfast, unfortunately, but the sitting area is right by the pool, and would be lovely.

Overall, an excellent choice for accommodation, though this is not a property to choose if you are looking for "at your doorstep" activities.
