One of the best holidays we have been on, location, accomodation, food, staff, beaches. A special thankyou to Andi wand at the Padi dive centre for putting me through my dive course. Definately on my list of places to revisit

We stayed at this hotel in July 2013 . We have stayed in AI hotels before but the staff in this hotel are probably the best we have experienced. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they always had a friendly smile and Hola for you .
I must give a special mention to some staff in particular "Carlos" from the main buffet & Gourmet restaurant and "Evelyn & Sony" from the pool bar. Sony made awesome cocktails and nothing was too much trouble. He is a real asset to the hotel (management take note).
This is a smaller AI hotel than we have been used to and the only real negative comment we would have is around the night time entertainment. The room they held the shows in was to small and warm to sit comfortably and watch the show (no air con) . The best nights we had where on the patio beside the lobby bar when they had their entertainment there. They also served your drinks in normal glasses and not plastic (which you would get at the indoor show) .
The food in this hotel was a good standard with plenty to choose from. we had meals at all 3 A la Cartes with the Gourmet being the best .
We spent most days between the beach and main pool and had no real issues getting a lounger and there was always some activity going on if you wanted to join in .
We stayed in the main hotel on the 5th floor and had a wonderful view over the bay again no real complaints but you do have to pay for your safe which is unusual for an AI hotel but we where aware of this before we arrived.
All in all we had a great time at the Grand Bahia Principe Cayacoa

Firstly i have been to a few hotels in the carabean (barbados, antuiga,st lucia paying in the reagion of £3 for 14 nights) and i must say this is the best hotel i have stayed in. the hotel is in great condition, the rooms and the hotel is very clean and i mean everywhere, the food is very good i wouldnt say mind blowing but very good there is something for everyone, we went for 14 nights , i normally get bored with the food at hotels staying this long but not here, al a carte resurants are good , the italian is the worst and what i mean by that is the resturant is in the wrong location on the complex the food is fine. bar staff excellent, resturant staff excellent, cleaners excellent, you normally get a few rude staff members in hotels but i never experenced any here , pools fantastic however the main tool is a little noisy but there are two other pools which are nice and quite if you prefer, beach , very good size and you have 2 to chose from , going down to the beach by lift is an experience in itself. i can honestly say that we could not fault anything with this hotel when we visited its probably one of the best hotels we have stayed in and i have been holidaying every year for the past 15 years now , i would 100 % recommend this hotel for anyone and i would 100% go back to this place with absolutly no hessitation, the only thing i would say is it may not be ideal for elderly as there are alot of steps to get down to the quiet pool, its not bad going down but coming back up , its very hard work, there are shuttle buses you can get anyway. overall if you want the carabean and a quality hotel , dont look anywhere else , book it , its value for money.

Good hotel no issues. Great value for money. Buffet restaurant excellent, al a carts nothing special and lacking air con.
Excellent room service very clean. Good facilities especially pool area. Could use a more convenient snack bar.
Pool bar staff sony and evelyn are brilliant.
Animation team ok although stay clear of a guy called blacky especially if u are an young single lady. He is also moody with some guests.
All in all far better than expected and would recommend to friends.

We stayed at the Grand Bahia in July for two weeks. We came out with relatives so there were four of us in total and because we booked in advance, we were given an upgrade to the Golden Suites at the rear of the hotel which gave us a bigger room and other upgraded facilities.

Firstly, the negative reviews on here are, in my opinion, a bit picky. This resort is not going to be as good as Cayo Levantado (Bacardi Island) and this is reflected in the price. That said, it offers truly great staff and facilities for the reasonable price it is.

Our rep Jessica was extremely helpful and available every day. She answered all of our questions and helped us arrange several day trips. Yes, these are dearer than the same trips from the town, but at least you know they are going to be fully insured (and safe!) and there's no chance of them taking the money and not turning up. The hotel staff in reception were also very helpful with any enquiries. One tip, the free wi-fi is much quicker if you stand the opposite end to the reception desk (where the Privilege club people work). The wi-fi worked most of the time although it can get a bit slow in there with everyone logging on at around the same time. Go up there mid morning (not just after a mealtime) and you'll be able to log on fine. I used Skype without any problems, it's easily quick enough for that.

Our room was immaculate every day, and although the selection in the mini bar wasn't extensive, it was nice to have soft drinks to take out on trips as well as the water, and then to have a cool beer at the end of a trip etc. Take a spare plastic card to make sure the aircon and fridge work all day. ;-)

The resort itself is out of the town, with the hourly shuttle taking you to a large hotel built complex in the centre of town. As soon as you get off the shuttle, you have people coing up to you, but most will not hassle you if you tell them no. The shop where you are dropped off was OK, my brother in law managed to get 1000 Marlboro for $150 (genuine Marlboro too). We did go for a short walk around the town, but most of the locals seem to enjoy staring at you intently and this can be a little intimidating if you are not used to these kind of places. Having visited Egypt and Tunisia before, I know what the hassle can be like, this doesn't seem as bad as those places.

Back to the hotel, the pools are all really good, not too busy and if you don't want the hectic atmosphere of the main pool and animation team, then the one by the snack bar is nice, right next to the bay and near to a bar. It's much quieter there too. They are all very clean, and I cannot fault them at all.

The food is normal for an all inclusive. I don't know how many of the people reviewing and moaning have tried to feed 3-400 people with enough variety to please everyone (and then do this three times a day!) but we really enjoyed it. The gourmet restaurants are OK, but the portions are limited. The surf and turf in the seafood restaurant is really nice (half a lobster!) but the gourmet and Italian ones are not much better than the buffet. Having had 8 visits to the a la carte in two weeks, I wouldn't go back to them more than once each per week.

The hotel staff all work really hard to make sure you enjoy your stay. Everyone is polite and friendly, and especially so if you try and use a little Spanish while you're there. I managed to pick up a few words during our stay and had a good time trying out my new found word skills with the restaurant staff! Juan (with the scubaquatic team) was really nice, no pressure to buy dive/boat trips etc but was honest about the diving off Samana so we booked through him. It cost $58 for one dive, but because I booked three (and my brother in law booked a PADI course) it only cost me $150. The rep told me that diving was rubbish off Samana, but Juan told me to try it. It's not bad at all, there is plenty to see on the ferry wreck, and I also dived a large coral wall where I saw the biggest lionfish I've ever seen! The other dive party also had a fleeting glimpse of a turtle not far off Cayo Levantado.

All in all I would highly recommend this hotel. You get what you pay for and this was more than value for money. I would definitely come back here in future, and would have no hesitation about coming back to the same hotel.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 26, 2013 via mobile

We stayed at the Grand Bahia for two weeks in July because we booked many months in advance we got upgraded to a villa suite at no extra cost, so when reading the review be mindful that the room facilities may be different in other rooms. The upgrade gave us a bigger room and 24 hr room service and nightly turn down service as well as the chance to go to the speciality reastaurants four times a week instead of the usual three times. Be prepared for the odd shower this time of year, its normal, some guests were in the hotel the week before told us of a full day of rain.

HOTEL
The hotel was great, staff very friendly and the staff to visitor ratio was good. The grounds were well kept and the steps were never a problem. When you fancy a buggy instead of walking you just ask for one and it comes. We probably rang for a buggy three times a day, most of the time it came but 3/4 times in the two weeks we were kept waiting 20 minutes but things go at a slower pace than back at home.

FLIGHT
This review is about the hotel but its worth mentioning the flight from the uk if thats how you will get to Dominican Republic. We came from the UK via Thompson/First choice great service as we decided to upgrade when we booked. The premier booking included unlimited drinks and a choice of meal with proper cutlery not plastic that was used in the standard part of the plane. The upgrade was £100 each way so £400 for both its worth it when you look up what you get.

CHECK IN AT HOTEL
We got checked in whilst we were on the bus to the hotel. The only thing they don't do is organise the safe deposit boxes that has to be done at reception.

ROOMS
Our room was as big as our flat back in the UK, we had two double beds. The bathroom had a large enough shower to fit two in. The bath had a button to make it a whirlpool bath. Our room included an ironing board, iron, coffee maker, ice bucket, complimentary robes and slippers and a golf umbrella. The TV only had Spanish speaking channels. The one thing I hated about the rooms was that the toilets are the same as in Greece, you can't flush paper down them, instead you place this in a little bin next to the toilet. Disobey this rule at your peril!!!!! We were lucky and had no problems but other guests did.

TURN DOWN SERVICE.
We were told that we had a nightly turn down service but this was nice but when we went for a hours sleep before dinner we had to put the "not to be disturbed" sign on the door.

ROOM MINI BAR
Was restocked daily, two cans of beer and a selection of soft drinks and two large bottles of water.

INTERNET
They have Internet in the whole complex to to access this it was $49 a week. The hotel has free wifi in the lobby so we went there a few minuites a day to access the news and e-mail.

BARS
Great bars great service, at the pool and beach I can understand why they served in plastic cups but I did not understand why in the nightclub they used plastic glasses. The drinks in the bar were great with a big choice. Loved the pool bar the best, Sony the barman was a character, when we got a basket of fruit for our wedding anniversary he made a cocktail out of the mango. On the last day we got two coconuts from the stall near the bridge to nowhere for $3 each we took them to the bar and Sony cut the tops off and added alcohol, this was a great end to a fab holiday. If you see Sony tell him "Sony for Mayor!!!!"

SAFE IN ROOM
A safe is a must have thing to us, I am always disappointed when hotels charge for something that should be standard. It is charged at $4 a day

TOILETRIES
A great range, you will not need to bring a thing.

REASTAURANTS
We went to all three. They are supposed to have a strict dress code of no trousers but you will regularly see people in shorts (3/4 length) its a shame they don't stick to it, it's a hot country and I found it too hot for trousers and had to change back into shorts after our meal. The best waitress was Yissel we met her in most of the reastaurants and every time she remembered us.

Orquida (gourmet restaurant) great place, they just keep topping up your glass. We went there three times. The carpaccio (raw beef) is to die for. With this reastaurant they do a great cheese board. This is in my view the best restaurant.

Italian restaurant and Fish restaurant. Great choice and service.

Buffet restaurant was a good mix of the previous three. They have a themed night every night.

POOLS
All of them are great, they had a team of cleaners every morning cleaning away. I think they try to cram too many beds around the main pool. Previous reviewers have said about the lack of umbrellas, its true they could have more but loads of trees give shade if needed, more umbrellas would just make the space even worse, for a quiet pool use the bungalow area, because its a little away from the complex it's very quiet, loads of space and no loud music, you can hear the waves from the pool, we went to this pool most mornings to read a book and swim. After lunch we would be at the busier pool bar.

BEACH
We liked both beaches, its true the water is not crystal clear, take a bread roll to feed the fish. No problem getting a bed unless you want a cabana bed, people were up early to bag them, I don't know why, I think they are too close to each other, you want to be able to talk without the couple next door listening to what you are saying.

BRIDGE TO NOWHERE.
Worth the walk, you have to sign a disclaimer as some bits are unsafe. We never did find out why it's built there is a disused building on the island at the end. Great photos from the bridge back to the hotel.

ANIMATION TEAM
They try their best but its only ok. The Michael Jackson night is a guy miming, the circus night is good. Because most of the entitainment is held in the night club it's only plastic glasses that are used so we preferred chatting to new found friends in the lobby bar as its was with proper glasses and open until 11.30pm

The best thing for us that the hotel did was the painting afternoon. We all made a small painting to take home, the artist was very good and we all went home with a masterpiece we could call our own. It was 40 years ago since I took a piece of art home to my mum, this is a must do activity.

DISCO.
It's ok, open for drinks till 2.00am on the all inclusive package, but its not that busy.

EXCURSIONS
We only did three excursions.

Zip wire. Fantastic excursion, this is a must do trip, see my review on this site.

Bacardi island is worth the trip but we thought the organised excursion was too expensive and took too long, all we wanted was a hour snorkelling then a hour on the beach. We got the guy in the beach water activities hut to take us for $20 each. It's well worth a visit but the toilets on the beach were horrid. On the day we went the beach was empty so we went skinny dipping.

Horse riding to El Limon waterfall. Great trip not for the faint hearted. Bring clothes that you don't mind a little splatter of mud on. Bring plenty of drinks although at the end we got a coconut drink for $3 which made the excursion complete. Each horse has a guide to hold onto the reins so you don't need to have ridden before. The guides are not paid and rely on tips but mine was very informative pointing out all the fruits and plants as we went. Also take long socks to wear as you have to wear rubber boots which they provide.

EXTRA STUFF

TIPS
Take a thermos mug, at breakfast the mugs are too small, I can drink a gallon of tea in the mornings also the mugs are great for keeping cold drinks cool instead of the glasses they provide.

Remember a pen when you arrive at the airport or in transit. We had two forms to fill in at the airport

If you go to bacardi island on a shoe string budget like us, save a few beers in your bag as they give you two a day, when you go on excursions put them in the fridge the night before then you have a few to take with you, we saved a couple of beers for the coach back to the airport.

If like us you do trips to the waterfalls, wrap some flip flops in your towel, you will need flip flops as the river bed is a bit sharp on your soles.

Nappy bags are usefull to put the toilet paper in and then put this in the bin next to the toilet.

You will get caught in a shower, have the same nappy sacks handy for the phone and camera. When it rains, it buckets down!

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 26, 2013

Came here for 2 weeks, was surprised by how good the hotel actually was, for the price we paid. Rooms, and all of hotel very clean and the service by everyone was excellent.

Buffet - food was good, although a bit samey, especially for lunch.
The 3 restaurants that you can book, included in the price of your stay 1, for each of the restaurants per week (so 6 in total for 2 weeks). These were excellent, and we were impressed by the quality of food and service, especially the surf and turf which was excellent.
The pool was good and generally clean, some people here have suggested it needs cleaning more, but what do you expect when surrounded by dense vegetation? There will occasionally be some leaves in the pool, but these are usually cleaned out quickly.
As for drinks being watered down - not true. Many of the cocktails and mixers were perfectly strong enough, and the local beer was of fairly good quality too. Wine not bad either for all inclusive.
Around the pool, not usually a problem for sun loungers, you could go down about 10-10:30 and there would still be space, which is not usual for other hotels. Always space on the main beach, and the smaller quieter beach to the left hand side of the pool down by the fish restaurant towards the fish restaurant and snack bar.
Animation team by the pool did their job very well, although a little bit annoying at times if you want to be left alone. Music was often very loud too, and lots of people seemed to be crammed in a small area during busy times in the hotel.
Agree with other reviews about the water sports and scuba diving team, being hassled by them every day was frustrating, and they have a rip-off price for PADI 2 day open water course, in comparison to other places in the world where it is much better to dive!
I had my birthday out there, and they reserved us a special table with lots of nice flower decorations on the table and in the room as well, bit of a mix up with the champagne we ordered, so they gave us 2 pieces of lobster as extra for free for the mix up. Put a fruit hamper in the room with a small bottle of rum and 2 t-shirts from the hotel! The waiters in the restaurants and the buffet were excellent, and really made the stay a lot better had the service been worse.
Water not dafe to drink in Dominican Republic, and all ice is made from purified water, and all food cooked with purified water which made a big difference.
Wifi was a bit slow if many people on it in reception, but otherwise generally good and free and unlimited. Always food and drinks available 24 hours a day.
Didn't go into the town of Samana after reports from other people saying you get so hassled and are not left alone at all down there. Location fine if you are only looking for a small beach nice hotel, and to venture out to do excursions, otherwise not much around with regards to shops, restaurants etc.
People complain about the sea in a few of these reviews as not 'typical Caribbean' - maybe check a map of where you are actually going before hand, and you would realise it is on the Atlantic side not the Caribbean Sea side... so if you want white beaches and turquoise Caribbean sea this is not the place!
When we arrived, had no hot water and bathroom flooded (my own fault!!) and they fixed the problem immediately and gave us a courtesy call the next day to check everything was OK.
If you are looking for a part of the island to explore and sample friendly traditional Caribbean lifestyle, then this is not the place!
Overall, great hotel which I would recommend as the service is so good, although I hate to say, has put me off mass-tourism. But hotel is fantastic.

Room Tip: Not on the 1st floor, as everyone will walk past to get to the buffet restaurant and can be noisy. I...
