Grand Bahia Principe Cayacoa
Ranked #5 of 54 Hotels in Samana Province
Certificate of Excellence

This is not a four star or even a three star hotel although there are elements that are three star but not consistently. This is a hotel that is getting tired. Staff are ok but some are not trained properly. The food is definitely decent but a bit repetitious. The house wine is drinkable but not wonderful. Specialty restaurants are good generally.Great location for beautiful and scenic views but a very, very boring hotel as there is really not much going on here. The beach is 2 stars with a 1 star elevator.
When you read the reviews one has the distinct impression that many are being ghost written...hint the same praise and the same verbal descriptions of the same employees (named).
One irksome silliness is the blatant attempt to sell guests on buying long term vacations with the Principe chain. This wastes the vacation time of guests and frankly is disgracefully a bad deal for anyone dumb enough to buy. I doubt they have any takers. The hotel is also over run by locals on the weekends, which is no big deal if you do not mind a busy pool area.

Room Tip: Rooms down the hill have more quietness and you will get great exercise walking anywhere up the hill...

The resort was great. The rooms were quite nice and very clean. The staff was very friendly and always accommodating. The location couldn't have been better. Several pools and beaches to choose from, all very nice. Normally I choose dining room over buffet hands down, but in this case, it wasn't so. The dining rooms were 'ok' but certainly nothing special. Food is available 23 hours a day, but the hours of each place are a bit weird. We lost power a few times, but that has to be expected - always took the stairs over the elevator just in case!
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this resort.

Room Tip: Main building, 5th floor, sea view - the best!

I don't know where to begin. What a holiday. We were a little worried about all the stairs, but it only helps to wear off the amazing food and drink we consumed. Don't listen to any bad reviews. You are bound to run into a few minor things but remember you are on holiday, so don't sweat the small stuff! To the amazing staff at the resort, you deserve a raise! You were all so friendly and helpful and worked extremely hard. From Gerdison at the front desk, to the animation team including Jose, Carolin, Yeson, Fernando, Jairo, Yulie, Juan (I hope I didn't leave anyone out). I can't say enough about you. Not only were you doing your job, but you went above and beyond. You made my son, who has Down syndrome, feel so important and part of your team, he is ready to go back tomorrow! We had so much fun with you all, whether it was at the pool, down at the beach or in the evening at the entertainment or disco. It truly is the people who made our holiday. The weather and natural beauty of the area was the icing on the cake! We are definitely going to save to come back as soon as possible.

As far as things to see, the "bridge to nowhere" was a beautiful outing. What a view at the end.
We also got to experience the Independence Day parade. It was so fun mixing with the locals. We felt totally safe and all you have to do if someone wants you to go to their shop, just be polite and say "no Gracias" and they will leave you alone.
If you like snorkelling, if you go on a calm day just off the resort (over in the Royal Golden section) it is amazing. We saw so many fish, starfish, coral and sea urchins, it was fabulous.
Thanks again, everyone for a wonderful vacation. We will definitely come back.

Room Tip: We were in rooms 105 and 204 and the view was fabulous and very close to everything. We could leave...

Spent a week there mid-February. Agree with comments that it is more 4 star than 5. Having said that, would rate the surroundings 5 star with the beautiful vistas looking over the ocean, bridge, full moon etc etc. Food was the best we have had in the DR. Service continues to get better. Would definitely go back...and hope by then that they have figured out the beach towel shortage!

Tip to travellers: this resort is cut out of the side of a hill and involves a fair number of stairs (there are alternative ramps in some cases) so be prepared for that or possibly avoid if you have an aversion to stairs.

Room Tip: Just loved overlooking the ocean, even if it was a small bay.

Just returned from 7 days at the GBP Cayacoa. Read the reviews before we left and we were hopeful the hotel would be as good as the reviewers said it would be and thankfully it was!! Overall great experience for myself and my husband as well as our 17 year old daughter and her 17 year old friend - something for everyone!! We had 2 connecting ocean view junior suites in the beach side villas and were very pleased with the accommodations - very clean and lots of space and amazing views!! Food was to be expected - typical buffet with something for everyone and a la carte restaurants were also typical for an all inclusive (they are a nice experience/alternative to the buffet). The girls loved the all night room service - great to have a snack after returning from the disco. STAIRS galore but no big deal - if you don't want to take the stairs the shuttle service is very efficient but really the stairs were not a problem for us (and we are really not even in shape - LOL). We would highly recommend the "Walk the Plank Zip Line Tour" as a MUST DO!!! (Bart, the owner, was our guide and he speaks US English -he's from Idaho) It was a zip line (very safe - no hand break), cultural tour (great mamajuana, organic coffee, chocolate, fruit, etc), beach stop -we swam and had drinks at a beach bar (El Valle Beach - beautiful), waterfall (we swam with the Zip line staff and played on the water swing and jumped off the top of the waterfall and had drinks served by Bart's parents who were visiting from Idaho), and as an added bonus we toured Bart's eco lodge he is building in the jungle with tree houses, etc (opening in the fall of 2013). AMAZING tour!! Shopping tip- free shuttle into town every hour on the hour which takes you to the Grand Bahai "Mall" but better deals can be "bartered" in the town or even better, if it is a cruise ship day (you will see the cruise ships in the bay), there is a market set up on the water front across the road and down the street from the "mall" and that is where you will find your best bargains!!! Vanilla, rum, chips, etc. are available at "locals" prices at the grocery store down town.
Staff at the GBP Cayacoa are ALL wonderful and are always happy to serve you and have a friendly smile and attitude above and beyond!!
Definitely would recommend this resort and would go back again.

Room Tip: We paid for the sea view upgrade and were given junior suites in the villas (connecting rooms with a...

We went for a one week family vacation to Bahia Principe Cayacoa during the Holidays, we were 8 scattered in 3 rooms. The hotel was advertised as 5 star but is rather a 4 star hotel. The rooms were comfortable and spacious, but you could hear the city noise (the town nightclub music playing until the early morning). Samana is not a destination to enjoy long walks on the beach, it's very short. But expect to be walking a lot around the resort, a lot of stairs going up and down, a lot distance to cover to go to the restaurants, to the pool, to the beach, etc. An elevator takes you down to the beach as the hotel is located on a cliff, or you can try the long set of stairs down. The beach is a bit dirty but ashore you can go for great snorkeling, a lot of starfish to see! Staff very friendly and helpful. Food is good, entertainment is OK, drinks are not all inclusive, which was odd for an all inclusive resort. Pool is nice. Resort casino is not located on site, you need to take a shuttle to go in town where the casino is, but not much worth the trouble. The town is very noisy, very polluted and every local trying to get your business. In all, very happy we got to see Samana but would not go back. If you want to enjoy nice beaches at a ground level resort, spend the extra bucks and go to Punta Cana.

Thank you so much to the amazing staff there for all the fun and feeling of warmth. Fernando, who could forget you and your crazyness and much energy. You made the trip so much fun with all of your animation team including spaghetti legs Jose A.
This was our second time there and will certainly go there again God willing. The waitresses and waiters, just to name some Yissel, Junior and so many more. We always feel so important. And we cannot forget the wonderful shuttle staff that are so kind and so prompt. and they ask what you have done in the day for interest. So worth going there and we dont mind the stairs when you think of all the amazing food that is offered.
And the amazing housekeeping staff Lewis and Martha. Thank you for the clean room and the hugs.
Thank you and hoping to see you again next year.

Room Tip: The rooms in the Villas are so beautiful.
