“Beautiful Resort!”
Reviewed March 1, 2013

My wife and I absolutely loved this resort! We have been to the Carribean & Mexico several times now (Dominican Republic 3 times, Jamaica, Mayan Riviera 3 times, & also Puerto Vallarta). This resort ranks in the top 2 - Sandals in Jamaica (Negril) is also quite spectacular. The room - Junior Suite Golden Club - was fantastic! Great views, roomy and clean. The service, food, and pools are 5 star worthy in my opinion, not to mention the well maintained surroundings. The setting is gorgeous, with Samana across the bay and the hotel built on the side of the hill. There are a lot of stairs but there is an excellent shuttle service to take you around the resort. You just have to call and they will send it to your door. The elevator going down to the main beach is functional and kind of sets it apart from the rest. We had no complaints except for maybe a lack of clean towels to exchange everyday, but that in no way detracted from having a wonderful vacation!

Room Tip: Most rooms have a great view. Royal Golden Junior Suites are in 3 floor walkups (3 separate villas...

My trip to the Dominican was memorable to say the least. It started with delayed flights, missed connections and a rental car with no brakes! I realize none of these are the fault of the hotel, however it definitely set the tone of the vacation. When learning of our delays, we contacted the Grand Bahia to see if we could push back our reservation one day. They had rooms availabile, however they would require us to pay for that day as well and simply lose out on the money we already spent for the night we were missing. We decided against spending the extra $$ but let them know we would be there first thing in the morning to check in. Upon our arrival, we were told by the security guard that we did not have a reservation. You can imagine our frustration! Upon talking to the front desk, they found our reservation but insisted the room was not ready. Clearly unacceptable since we had paid for the previous night. Once the manager was called, the rooms were magically available...the exact same room #s that were not available a minute earlier. The "All Inclusive" never had beach towels available and when I called for extra bath towels, it took 4 phone calls and 40 minutes before they actually arrived.

Food is buffet style and it was decent. The property itself is beautiful. The views amazing. Lots of stairs, so be prepared to climb close to 150 steps every time you want to get from your room to the main building.

Side note: The locals in Cayacoa/Samana will harass you A LOT when you go down into the town pushing you into their shops. Better to travel with a guy rather than a group of girls to minimize this.

Must See! Whale Samana was amazing. The humpback whales were literally 10 yards from the boat. They breached, waved their fins. It was surreal and highly recommended!!!

If you stay at the Grand Bahia, you will have a great time, just don't expect the high level of service you get from this scale of property in the US.

Samana, Dominican Republic is absolutely gorgeous. A few key highlights:

- We stayed at the Gran Bahia Principe Cayacoa: food was (unexpectedly) great, staff was AMAZING and incredibly friendly, property was well-maintained and the weather was gorgeous

- We did two excursions: a culture tour, and the ziplining tour. The culture tour was mediocre as we had a rainy morning and a host whose English was a bit difficult to understand. The ziplining tour was phenomenal. The zipline consists of a 13 cable zipline where you zigzag down a massive, lush gorge. 100% safe, great staff, and beautiful views. When you get to the bottom, you have the opportunity to swim in a freshwater waterfall and jump off the surrounding cliffs. Despite how amazing the zipline was, the absolute highlight was meeting Bart (who seems to be incredibly popular on Trip Advisor, and we see why!). He owns the zipline and is developing a stunning "eco-lodge treehouse village" just steps away from the waterfall. He is incredibly friendly and willing to share his stories, advice, and dreams with anyone who is interested in hearing them. Absolutely, without a doubt, the highlight of our trip. Worth the money (and more), so GO!

- We booked though Air Canada Vacations and were disappointed with nearly every aspect of our travel experience. We had a total of 4 flights (including connections) and every single one was either delayed or cancelled entirely. Moreover, our Air Canada representative in Samana was less-than-friendly and not of much help. We would book with another organization if we went back.

All in all, a fantastic trip. Would highly recommend Samana to anyone looking for a relaxing and fun-filled beach getaway.

Room Tip: Request to NOT be on the same floor as the lobby! It is loud as you hear people going from the bar t...

A beautiful private setting in well-landscaped property with good views from most rooms. Not well suited for guests unable to climb some stairs. Two small beaches with beach bars and decent swimming. No beach vendors a plus! Good food variety and quality at buffet restaurant. A la carte food not as premium as would have expected. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Junior suites have more room and usually nice views. Club Golden jr suites more private setting. Ask...

We spent two weeks in the Domnican Republic. One of them was spent in Samana, staying at Bahia Principe Cayacoa, and it was amazing. Both the country with all excursions available and the hotel itself were incredibly pleasurable. I will definitely go back and I would advice everyone to go there.

The people we met were very friendly and helpful. DR is economically a poor country but rich in terms of happiness.

The other place we stayed at was located in an area together with other hotels, where tourists are separated from locals. That was nowhere as nice as our stay in Samana.

My boyfriend and I traveled to the Grand Bahia Principe Cayacoa in September 2012 as our first all inclusive vacation. The entire trip I couldn't wipe the grin off my face. We had a fanatastic time and would go back in a heartbeat. The service was great, and there was always something to do.

ROOMS: We had no problem with our room, had a nice view of the ocean, but we honestly did not spend much time in here at all. It was comfortable and kept quite clean. One thing worth mentioning, I'm an insomniac, and I did not have a problem sleeping once. That was how comfortable we were!

FOOD: Food was fantastic!!! The buffet had a wide variety of things to choose from, and we never got bored of it. We went to each a la carte and enjoyed the gourmet the best. Fantastic food and great service.

BEACH: Could not get ENOUGH of the beach!!! Friendliest staff at the beach bar, the water was terrific (I did get stung by a sea urchin but that was my own fault for not paying attention to where I was going). Lots of great snorkeling, lots of shells, starfish everywhere. No problems getting a chair on the beach. So relaxing sitting on the beach with a Banana Mama in our hands looking into the ocean.

POOL: The pool was great!! Loved the swim up bar, great size, always clean. We had a pool party one night and saw giant fruit bats swooping around the pool; it was REALLY interesting to watch!! I love wildlife so I got a huge kick out of this.

ACTIVITIES: The resort staff always find something for you to do. It was great, as two of the activities, Archery and Bocce Ball, are two of our favorite activities to do back home!! They have competitions, and my boyfriend and I each won a bottle of rum!! Such a great time!! They also have darts, shuffleboard, water aerobics, etc.

EXCURSIONS: We went on two excursions on this trip. The first was Rincon beach with is a MUST!!!!!!!!! The most beatiful beach I've ever seen in my entire life. White sand and turquoise water, more wildlife (crabs, fish, birds). Made a puppy friend while we were there too! During this excursion we also learnt about the culture and visited a farmhouse and school which was really interesting as well. They provided lunch of chicken and fish, and had LOTS of rum! The other excursion was to Bacardi island, which was fun. The staff there weren't as friendly (trying to get us to pay to sit on a chair!) but on our way there we saw dolphins swimming alongside the catamaran which was really neat!! They did run out of rum on that trip, and only brought nachos and salsa to eat. That was the biggest downfall.

Best first vacation we could have imagined! :)
