I stayed at the gran bahia principe Samana 1st week of September with my girlfriend. We booked our trip with something called 'roulette'. You dont know witch resort you get before landing in samana. Theres 2 resort possible. That's part of the reason it was really cheap. We really had a good time. I first was given a room right above the huge terrace and it was noisy. The toilet was not flushing. We went the the front desk to change room but apparently it was full that night. They sent someone for the toilet within seconds to fix it. The next day we went back and we got placed in a new room far from the lobby. It was perfect. We almost had our private pool and spa. There was a bar but it was closed. It was quite a walk to the lobby etc but we loved it cause we were far from the noise/action. The food was OK at best. Restaurant / buffet / lobby without A/C that was really ordinary. I was also really disappointed with the local on the beach and bar mostly on weekend. They were not talking to the tourist or trying to sell anything but still, it was weird to share the beach with locals. We did the trip to Cayo Levantado and it was amazing. We also rented a motorcycle with a guide named Santiago and it was a BLAST ! He was right after the hill to go to Samana. He took us into some small village, private beach, nice bar were we saw some dolphins etc. it has cost us 50$ and it was the best 50$ i have spent in a while. Overall it was not the peak season so i can understand some of the down side. The site itself was really nice. The people of the resort were really nice too, we mostly had great service with everyone. We really enjoyed our trip considering it was cheap. I wont go back but not because we didnt like our trip but i feel like there alot of other places i want to see.

WOW. This holiday is absolutely brilliant and is well worth the money! After our initial hotel was closed, we were moved here and upgraded to VIP. It wasn't much different apart from you got a junior suite and free room service. Rooms were kept incredibly clean; with my two teenager's mess constantly being tidied away! All the staff were incredibly friendly; they just simply couldn't do enough for you. During the day the animation team made sure you were having fun, there was constantly something happening around the main pool. My teenagers loved staying up there whilst we stayed around the quieter jacuzzi pool. TIP: if you walk up to the far end of the hotel there is a small pool which is constantly empty, it's very relaxing and great if you just want to chill out.
Food was marvelous with lots of different varieties and special menus on different days. However the locals do come to the hotel at the weekend so they tend to cater mainly for those; how ever the food is still great.
Night time was just as fun filled as the day with entertainment either in the lobby bar or in the disco. Once a week there is a beach party or a pool party; I would recommend entering all the competitions as the winner gets a bottle of rum! The disco was great, my teens were always in there as it was open up until 2am. They made a huge group of friends and every one knew every one by the end of the two weeks - such a great atmosphere.
Over all I would definitely, with out a doubt, come back to the hotel again! Oh and if you're planning on taking a trip make sure you book it from the people at the beach; they are the cheapest and are great value for money. Last comment, there are a lot of stairs.... I wouldn't book here if you don't like walking.

My husband and I loved it. Would go back in a heart beat. the hotel was beautiful, the staff were attentive and friendly. The food was delicious!!! The rooms are a little outdated but very clean. The only downfall is the beach area a bit disappointed but overall its a perfect place to go and relax and enjoy the view of Samana!! Def worth the money.

When we arrived at The gran Bahia after a three hour coach journey we were pleased to get into our room which was clean and tidy and well laid out. The following day we decided to visit the beach this was full of litter and storm debris, old bottles, branches and random items, we lied there and by lunch time this had not been cleared we went for lunch and came back down and it had been cleaned although this was a reacurring problem day after day. The hotel was very quiet and was peacefull until you sat down to enjoy a drink in the public areas, they have cigar sales men here some days who do not leave you alone and pester you for about an hour, but the worse selling of all is the missellling that the hotel staff do, they are guys that wounded around in white polo t shirts with gran Bahia written on them, they tell you you can have a free visit for the day to there better hotel down the road you can try the food beaches and look at the hotel in case you want to book there next time. They arrange the transport, and even give you a free watch and sunglasses, they fail to inform you that you need to sit through a 4 hour talk trying to sell you a time share for 1500 pounds you sat there had a quick lunch a guided tour and then back on the bus, a waste of a days holiday no enjoyment on that day BEWARE! The hotel is civilised until weekends where itis overrun by natives the Dominican people, who come here for the weekend, this makes a problem in the restaurant where u have to queue but the Dominican people have no concept of queues and we queued for dinner over 20min on these days, the entertainment and food is caterers more to thedominican people at weekends with Dominican disco, Dominican food and Dominican people taking over the activitys on the beach not what I expected of a five star tourist hotel, also lots of children running around. Some of the services we paid for did not happen mainly, internet in the rooms as advertised, a turn down service, room service we were only given the menu on the tenth day, and a vip club room bar which appears to have dissapeared, for our upgrade fee we had a sofa thats all ! Staff were friendly I am however looking forward to returning home on Wednesday back to sunny Britain. We also did not get a fruit basket and presents for our honeymoon even though other couples did, maybe this was due to us being gay and the other couples being straight ?????

Room Tip: The golden junior suites are bigger rooms although not worth the extra payment if you don't get all the facility's advertised
