I have never been on a trip before outside of my country (Canada), and I was very nervous about our first family vacation to a tropical place. When we arrived, I was a little lost and confused becausethe resort was so big and has so much to offer. The first night we learned our way around and it was very easy to understand due to the amazing staff that works there. I have never met such friendly people in my life. If you need something, they are there to help you always. It is beyond beautiful here and such a friendly place to be and it is near a lot of things. I would definatly reccomend this to everyone, my friends and family. Also there are many excursions offered, so you are never there with nothing to do. And the beaches, pool, and wet bar are a lot of fun too. I also enjoyed the variety of food they offer at the buffet. Very good. Again, the view is simply breath taking, and the people here are so nice. Definatly the place to go if you are nervous about going to a different country. I plan on visiting here again soon because I have made such good friends here.

Room Tip: Try and book your room near 200 - 210, the view there is simply amazing. If not, try 435-440. Again...

We are currently vacationing in samana and writing this review at another resort. We booked with airtransat a one week package for a party of seven (golden). We all stayed in building 32 facing the ocean. The resort is clean and beautiful but unfortunately the room service and staffs are not, because we are traveling with our 23 months old son (his 15th trips) we called room service and was hung up twice in one night, 3rd time and 2 hours later, they brought us what we didn't order. We address this problem to our airtransat reps the next day. 3rd day at this resort after our day out playing at the pool upon returning to our room, my husband went to the snack bar and got some fries and pizza wrapped in paper napkins for our son, as he was walking out he was stopped by the server and was told that he was not allow to bring food back to our room. Though he tried to explained to them that room service has hung up on us the night before, the server refuse to let him go (my husband threw the food at him). I immediate contact the reps and ask for their assistance either change resort or take us back to Canada. That same night we tried again and order some snacks and no delivery... After 2000 dollars more for 3 rooms 6 adults and 1 child and paying our own transportation we are now staying at Cayo Levantado. I'll definitely address this matter further upon our return to Canada...

great holiday, staff couldn't do enough for you, the view was absolutely lush looking out to the sea and Barcadi Island. found the hotel very clean and food was surprisingly good, they had different themes every night so even fussy people would find something yummy!
only problem was the complaining English!
would definitely go back!

Room Tip: junior suite was a lot more luxurious than the standard rooms and not a great deal difference in price.

Let's start by saying the view is fantastic. We were fortunate enough to stay in the main building, so we were close to everything.
The food was good and the service was excellent.
The water was disappointing as the colours were not as brilliant as other resorts we had been to. There were lots of starfish that could be seen, but not clearly. The snorkelling was not as good as other places I have been to.
We were there at a time when the resort was only half full so we never had problems getting chairs by the pool or ocean.
The entertainment at night was good, but it was so loud in the small amphitheater that we often left early.
We went to read and relax by the water in the sunshine. We were definitely able to do this.
The ride to and from the airport was definitely interesting as the driver had to deal with the many motorbikes, students walking, vehicles parked on the narrow, curvy roads and slower vehicles. It was particularly interesting to see these bikes treated as small cars.
It was a good trip to this resort, we enjoyed it, but I don't think we would go back.

Room Tip: The villas have a lot of up and down walking to and from the main areas. The beach in front of them...

I'm a little late writing this review, but I thought it might help others if I jotted something down. My wife & I stayed for a week at Gran Bahia Principe Cayacoa in early April 2011.
The Hotel is very unique. It has an elegance, old world charm to it. Be prepared for a lot of walking and steps to climb. (although a tram will pick you up, if required) With the Hotel being built on a hill, you get fantastic tropical views of the city of Samana and the ocean. The resort has more of a tropical feel to it, than other resorts that I have stayed. Also having an elevator ride to take you to the beach, is unique. The beach area is quiet, but would only get an average rating compared to other Dominican beaches. (not very picturesque, with the brown sand)
The weakness of the resort is the 'a' la carte' restaurants. Although the resort does try, they are not very appetizing, in my opinion.
The buffet, however, was well done and always had a good variety.
Only pick this resort, if you enjoy a quiet nightlife. We loved having a quiet evening drink, listening to the local music, while overlooking the lights of Samana.
Make sure you talk to "Raymond' at the end of the beach, if you want to experience some great excursions. This is a real strength of the Hotel. The proximity of worthwhile excursions, that give you a taste of the beauty of the Dominican Republic. "Raymond" at the end of the Beach will set you up with memorable excursion to "El Lemon Falls" (not to be missed, but be warned there are some steep steps) & the day trip to Gran Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado Island. Although you can not enter the resort, the beach on this island is postcard worthy. Raymond's boat takes about 15 minutes from the mainland to the island & then you get to spend the day on a white sand, tropical beach with turquoise water. (it was a great day) Next time we visit, we plan to see the humpback whales.
Overall, the beauty & charm of the hotel will make it an easy decision to return.

Room Tip: Always try to pick the top floor, for better ocean views
