My wife and I have just returned from the Grand Bahia Principe Cacao in Samana. We were there from May 18th for two weeks. We have traveled all over the Caribean over the years in 3,4,and 5 star hotels, so Ilike to think we would know the difference.and in our opinion this is ,at best, a three and a half star hotel.
To be fair there are some very good points, and some very bad points.
The hotel is absolutely spotless, everywhere, you drop a crumb in the restaurant, there is somebody there to pick it up,bit of seaweed on the beach, its cleaned up immediately, the cleaning staff are fantastic, they seem never to stop.
The Food:- The main buffet restaurant has a very good selection every night, but is usually warm at best ,and cold if you are not there when it is put out.
The other restaurants are much better food wise, but the service lets them down,we had to wait 40 minutes for our first course in the Italian restaurant.,and it was only soup, when we arrived at the door, the maitre de.was holding the door half open and on his mobile phone,,no "good evening" or buenos noches,we gave our room number, and the he and the head waiter had a chat, we were waiting for our welcome drink, and to be seated, after a few minutes we managed to get his attention and we found our table, only to be served by an extremely surly waiter .but the food was worth the wait.
The Fish restaurant was OK nothing special, and the Gourmet restaurant had very good service but, miniscule portions.I can imagine some people going up to the Buffet restaurant after they eat there.but what was there was very nice.
There is also a snack bar alongside one of the pools,we eat there twice, we were ill twice, draw your own conclusions.
There are three/four pools ,all quite nice, the main one,has all the
the activity around it, games etc and music ......lots of music....maybe a little to noisy...but to each his own.The snack bar pool is smaller but quieter, we found a little gem of a place in the lower pool area, very quiet ,no one staying in the rooms around it, at times we were the only ones there.
The animation staff are very.............energetic,they are very good during the daytime activities, but I am afraid their attempts at the night time "shows" are not particularly good.
but they are very friendly and outgoing.
The various bars around the hotel are ..once again..... OK, NOTHING SPECIAL .The most popular ,the lobby bar was understaffed in the busy part of the night, but, the waitresses were very good,.The drinks were typical caribean hotel drinks ,,mass pruduced behind the bar, in fact behind ,behind the bar.I found the brandy was very good, and the beer wasnt bad.
We both felt that the cocktails did not have much alcohol in them.We didnt find out until later into the holiday that, because we were upgraded to the"gold! club we were entitled to some premium drinks, but some of the bar staff refused to serve them to us and denied it..
We were staying in the junior suites which were a little bit apart from from the main hotel
There is a free shuttle up to the main building but we sometimes waited up to 25 minutes, and MAKE NO MISTAKE this hotel has a lot of steps.
We had cause to use room service on one occasion because my wife was ill....not a good idea I asked for sandwiches ,,,,,I got two a quarters of a slice of bread.....and cold fries
We knew that we could get reasonably priced excursions somewhere other than through the hotel, but as was pointed out, if anything happens on them you ARE NOT insured.
We were dissapointed with the beach...its ok to cool off but thats about it...especially after seeing Cayo Leventados beach.
Samana town can be rip off central if you let it,I know we are suposed to barter sometimes,
but there was a 35 dollar difference from the shop and the market stalls for the same item.
We understood there was a dress code of sorts in the restaurants ....certainly not in the main restaurant ,with people coming in in the same clothes as they wore on the beach.......and a pet hate of mine ......baseball caps ....and not taking them off while eating,,,,,,
Some of the....older generation did make an effort to shower and change for dinner.
This is our third time to DOM,REP......we would not cme back to this hotel

Stayed with friends in the main hotel. The beginning was not perfect, our bags got lost... The phone number given by the representative of US Airways in the airport was never answered, we asked for help the concierge in the hotel, and they did not help us either. The bags arrived 5 days later only after we asked one of the tour operators if he knew how could we contact the local US Airways office and get our bags back. He constantly called somebody and we had our bags a few hours later. The drive to the hotel is about 2 hours. The location is wonderful! The other drawbacks were the diluted drinks (even beer!) - we actually compared the same alcohol in an unopened bottle and the one served in a bar - a big difference! The food is not the best I ever had, tolerable, not a big variety of fruit (quite surprizing - we saw a lot of fruit being sold in the village), the restaurants were good, just the Fish restaurant... we had to wait a while to be served, and the food took so long to arrive! I liked the hotel itself - room was nice, great view from the balcony! Do not leave anything important laying anywhere - even on the table - our maid decided to throw away our pool/towel passes (for which you would have to pay if lost), well we had to dig through her garbage to find them. Other than that, the service was very good. I enjoyed the stay, if it was not for the lost baggage...
By the way, the US Airways lost our bags on the way back also!

Room Tip: main hotel is the better option

Our holiday was the best from start to finish the reception when we arrived at the hotel was friendly and welcoming, our room was clean and had a lovely view from the balcony. The staff were great, always happy to help, entertaining and friendly.

All areas of the hotel were always kept cleaned the maids were always happy to help and supply more towels and water bottles.

The entertainment staff were the best during the day on the beach and the pool then in the evening.

If your looking for a quite get away or something a little bit different this holiday could give you everything you need

Room Tip: Ask for sea view

We stayed at the Gran Bahia Cayacoa from 11th May for two weeks. We are a well travelled couple and we have also been to several Caribean destinations inlcuding the Domenican before. We booked this holiday as we wanted a realaxing two weeks all inclusive in the sun. We booked through Thomsons online for £791 pp so very good value, because we booked before March we were upgraded to a Golden Club Junior Suite, the room was very spacious, good fittings, superb four poster bed which could have easily fit four people in, jacuzzi bath, seperate shower in the well fitted bathroom and the best bit was the amazing full sea view from the balcony, it was truely stunning!! The food in the buffet restaurant was excellent quality and a different theme every night, there are three a la carte restaurants, fish, gourmet and Italian, we found the Italian average, the fish very good and the gourmet fantastic. The staff were so friendly and the animation team made our holiday complete, well done Elvis, Lenny and Danny!! We did Cayo Levantado exursion, again good and white water ratfing which was excellent. The beach is yellow sand, clear water, amazing for snorkelling and the beach is very clean. The pools are great, a games pool and a quieter one. The weather was hot and humid with a couple of days rain. The entertainment was great too. The only one thing I would say is for some reason on a couple of nights they didn't put alchohal in our drinks at the bar, maybe this was a language barrier? be warned there are a lot of steps, however it keeps you fit and there is a free buggy service which takes you back and forth from your room. Overall this was a fantastic holiday and I would strongly recommend.

Room Tip: Book early to get free room upgrades

I travelled to this hotel for 2 weeks at the end of March this year. The people are so friendly and the scenery is amazing. Yes ourtside of the resort it is very poor and I don't think you would want to be out there on your own but you really cannot fault anything in the hotel and to me it was the perfect all inclusive paradise holiday and we could not have asked for more. Food lovely, sea view from the room was the best I have ever had. Cannot understand the people that fault the hotel. We paid £900 for the package, all inclusive that included flights and considering how far away dominican is I think this is great value for money. Would I go back - definitely. Loved it.

Room Tip: get a sea view room, you won't regret it :o)
