“Fantastic!!”
Reviewed March 17, 2014

What can I say, I have just returned home having spent a fantastic two weeks at Cayo Laventado. Very relaxing, beautiful location, excellent food.. we didn't even get around to try any of the al a carte restaurants because the buffet was so good!!!
However I did overhear two people complain about the selection of food because... they couldn't find anything they liked to eat???? I'm not sure what they like to eat normally, but I can only imagine they were the worlds fussiest eaters because there was steak, chicken, lamb, seafood, lobster, crab, salads, vegetables, stews, soups, breads, burgers, chips, cheeses, fruit, and more desserts choices than anyone really needs, etc.. etc.. etc.. Every day there were speciality dishes as well. Everything was cooked and very tasty. No upset stomachs to deal with.
The entertainment team also worked very hard, although do not expect this to be a party hotel.. it's not. The hotel entertainment finishes about 10:30pm and the bar closes at 11pm. Yes you can then go to the public beach where the entertainment continues, but again some people complained it was too far away?? Perhaps they drive everywhere normally because the island is only about half a mile long.. so not really that far to walk is it?
My only minor issues were
1) There was no 'no smoking' section for the outside buffet tables, and while some guests who wished to smoke were courteous and moved away from people eating, others didn't and seemed to chain smoked on the next table while you tried to eat your meal.
And 2) On arrival after a nine hour flight, and then a four and a half hour bus transfer.. we were met by a humourless man who told us to fill out registration forms to check into the hotel... very long forms wanting passport details, flight details, airport details, home address, telephone numbers, etc.. etc... Which were the exact details I gave the travel company when I booked the holiday in the first place.... And the exact same details I had completed on the other three sets of forms I'd been asked to complete since arriving on the island!

Never the less we had to complete this paperwork before we could get on the boat to take us to the island.. We were very hungry, thirsty and tired, and nearly everyone at this stage was starting to suffer sense of humour failure. To compound this once we had completed the paperwork we were herded onto a jetty.... but there was no boat.. so we then had to wait for that too... (which is when I heard another traveller suggested we perhaps needed to fill out another form to request the transfer boat)...

However if you can suffer the transfer and check in process, you soon forget all about it once you arrive on the island, it is excellent, the rooms are fantastic, the resort very clean, staff helpful and polite, and it is very relaxing.

My wife and I have just returned from Cayo Laventado and were blown away by the whole experience. We have visited many Caribbean all inclusives over the years and this resort would rate as number one in our minds. If you are looking to relax in luxury then this is the place for you. If you are looking for a party then do not go here. It is very quiet and reserved. A beautiful location and a place to recharge. There is nothing negative to say about the resort and you could go on a long time listing the positives. From the food, staff, accommodations, restaurants, pools, beaches, entertainment, gardens, etc. all were top notch. We would recommend the resort to anyone who wants to be pampered and feel special. Definately a 5 out of 5 in our books and we have experienced many other resorts to compare it to in many other countries.

Room Tip: We stayed in Villa 4102 and were very satisfied with its location to all amenities and the view from...

My wife and I just returned from a wonderful nine-day stay (late February-early March) at Luxury Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado (BPCL). It is an elegant, very beautiful, generally quiet (but not always – see below), sedate resort for adults. The most striking thing about BPCL is its stunningly beautiful setting on Cayo Levantado - a, lush, seemingly-mountainous, tropical island. As you walk BPCL ‘s beautifully-landscaped, sometimes steep, paved paths, you are surrounded by palms, mangroves, and tropical foliage, and you often hear only the calls of birds. The only thing missing is a volcano!
Cayo Levantado, which roughly translated means “rising key” (or “risen key”), ascends sharply from Samaná Bay. The bay is gorgeous, and BPCL affords beautiful views of it from the beach, the elevation of the main building (where the principal restaurant, “Orquídea,” is located), and elsewhere. I even viewed whales in the bay from the terrace outside Orquídea!
Other pluses: 1) The beach is stunning and the water on the leeward side (away from the wind) is quite gentle, making for good swimming and floating (I love to float on my back and look at the sky) and easy snorkeling (although I have seen more interesting fish and sea-life elsewhere).
2) Also, for sailing enthusiasts like myself, there is one Hobie Cat catamaran available for use one-hour a day at no additional charge. You have to sign up a day in advance. The sailing was terrific, and a bit challenging, as the wind picks up and its direction changes somewhat once you get beyond the sheltered area near the shore. (Sailing lessons are also offered for a fee.)
3) Additionally, our room (a “junior suite”) was comfortable, lovely, and spacious (but see caveat below).
4) The food was quite good. I actually enjoyed the buffet Orquídea Restaurant more than the three fancier restaurants for which reservations were required. In addition to a wide, attractive buffet selection, Orquídea at lunch and dinner offered a choice of meat, chicken, and seafood that the chef grills to order in front of you. The “reservation restaurants” offered more complicated “gourmet” dishes, the results of which varied, and the service was sometimes slow. I personally prefer more simple, freshly prepared dishes with fresh ingredients. I especially enjoyed the fresh fish and shellfish, as well as the paella, at Orquídea.
5) There are interesting guests from a number of countries. We met some nice people from Spain, Sweden, Germany, England, and Canada, plus Russian-speaking Ukrainians who now live in New Jersey. Interestingly, more English-speaking guests were from Canada and England than from the US!
6) We took some terrific excursions, including trips to Playa Rincon and Los Haitises National Park, and whale watching with Whale Samaná. Of course, we did not need to be staying at Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado to take these excursions.
7) The staff was, by and large, quite friendly and helpful.
The above accolades not withstanding, Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado has some notable quirks and drawbacks.
A) Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado’s motto ought to be: “If you want cash, bring it with you.” Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado does not cash travelers check and does not have an ATM! So, if you need cash – for instance, to take excursions on your own, as we wanted to do - you are out of luck, or at least mightily inconvenienced. You have to take the ferry to the mainland. (BTW, the ferry makes ten round trips a day.) There is a bank ATM where the ferry docks (Simi Baez), but it seemed to be connected only to the VISA network. If you need to go into the town of Samaná to go to a bank, the taxi from Simi Baez costs $20 each way. (We found that even in Santo Domingo, only one bank, Banco Popular, would cash American Express travelers checks, and it was a time-consuming process.)
When BPCL’s reception desk staff told us they would not cash our American Express travelers checks, I was outraged. But I managed to quietly and firmly protest, pointing out that we were staying for nine days, we had never been to a resort, including Iberostar, Excellence, and Sol Melia, that would not cash travelers checks, and Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado had not notified us in advance that they would not cash travelers checks. The reception person was sympathetic and agreed to seek authorization to cash our travelers checks. Eventually, he did get authorization and did cash (in Dominican pesos) our travelers checks for US $400, but it took THREE days!
B) We stayed in the main building in room 212, which is conveniently located but apparently is right above a food preparation or work area. Also, some guest rooms are undergoing renovation. Whatever the cause, on several mornings we were awakened around 8:20 by the sound of hammering or food chopping, which continued for varying amounts of time, sometimes for a long time. We complained, and BPCL offered to switch us to other rooms, but it was fully booked, and the two rooms that were available (and we viewed) had significant drawbacks, in terms of location, size, or features. In particular, one room offered was on the fifth floor, but the elevator in the main building goes only to the fourth floor(!), and a long walk down the fourth floor corridor is required to get to the stairway. After climbing the stairs, another long walk was required to reach the available room. Also, it turned out that, while we had booked only a “superior” room (the lowest level), the room they had given us (perhaps knowing it was noisy) was actually one step up (a “junior suite”), and was quite a bit nicer than the merely “superior” rooms they offered as alternatives. We ended up keeping room 212 and adapting to the possibility of early morning noise.
C) We have never stayed at a resort that provided so little information! Previous resorts distributed information sheets with a schedule of daily activities and events, and/or prominently posted such information on large signs that could be easily viewed. While we knew that Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado does not offer a lot of activities, it seems to want to keep the ones that it does offer a secret. It has a water exercise class (at the edge of the beach, not in the pool), beach volleyball, rudimentary dance lessons, and a weekly boat ride around the island, and perhaps some other activities (who knows?). However, you have to ask about the activities to learn that they are offered, unless you just happen to stumble across them or you learn about them from another resort guest. Guests are advised to download the Bahia Principe app to learn about events, and we did so. But BPCL’s slow wifi made it difficult to use, and some of the information on it was wrong or out of date. For example, the 12:45 pm dance classes listed are nonexistent.
D) There are supposed to be Latin dance classes on the beach at 5 pm every day, but often the “animation” staff is worn out from playing volleyball and does not bother to give them. When they did give the class, it was quite basic and perfunctory. It was fun, but we didn’t learn much.
E) Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado’s evening entertainment is either a show on the outdoor stage near the Orquídea Restaurant or musicians performing on the outdoor terrace. The resort seems to have no enclosed space for performances or activities. So, rainy weather knocks out the evening entertainment, and there is not much BPCL can offer as indoor diversions, other than drinking. On the one rainy day that we experienced, BPCL set out board games in the lobby.
F) Many of the paved paths around the resort are rather steep, as BPCL is located on a mini-mountain. This was not a problem for us but could be a problem for people with limited mobility or cardiovascular issues. BPCL does provide transportation, on request, in golf cart type vehicles, but one might quickly tire of calling and waiting for rides.
G) We would have liked BPCL better if it had offered more activities related to Dominican and Latin culture, including Spanish lessons and more opportunities for Latin dancing (other than late night at the public beach) and a little more serious and regular Latin dance lessons.
H) If you want to change money (i.e., cash) from US dollars to Dominican pesos, the resort offers a lousy rate - 36 pesos per dollar. Banks were offering 42 or 43 pesos per dollar.
In sum, Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado’s pluses far outweigh its minuses. We thoroughly enjoyed our vacation there, except for the time we spent fretting over how to obtain more cash. If you want an exceptionally beautiful location, a lovely beach with a sheltered swimming area, good food, and available sailing, we highly recommend it. Also, a whale-watching excursion is a must, if you are going to BPCL or anywhere in Samaná during whale-watching season (mid-January to early March). If you want lots of action, organized activities, and entertainment, however, BPCL probably is not the place for you. And, if you do go to BPCL, be sure to bring all the cash you will need.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms in the main building are noisy. You might be better off in a villa. Also, it is pr...

Arrived February 25th for 2 weeks, this was our 2nd time, we came January last year. There is not a lot I can say, except 2nd time around the island and hotel is still amazing, if you are looking for a quiet, chilled out holiday, with fantastic service and food, and amazing surroundings, cayo is the place to come and relax. We met some really great people, everyone including staff were really friendly. Ok so again we had that 3 1/2 hour coach journey, not so bad really, and there was a lot of returning guests, from the UK, so it speaks for its self, I can see us returning here again. Thanks to all the staff and to Alexis who is the main man again.

This resort is amazing in regards to its customer service. The entire time we were there, we were treated like royalty (especially my wife) which made the entire experience much more amazing. The staff really did take care of you and genuinely wanted to ensure that you had a good time. There was a night there where we got to dance the bachata with some of the staff members during a night event which was loads of fun.
As far as the food, the buffet was delicious! Each day had a different theme and there were always many varieties to try. The restaurants for the most part were really good as well. Portofino and Mediterráneo were both pretty good, though Don Pablo was our least favorite. The portions were small even by a fine dining standard and it lacked flavor. My wife and I are foodies so we are a little more strict when it comes to our food reviews, but if you have never been to a fine dining restaurant, at least give it a try.
Our room was amazing! We were upgraded to a villa with a huge view of the ocean. It was picturesque and breathtaking. We had a king bed that was enormous and the whirlpool tub (my favorite) was large and spacious. It did take a little bit for it to fill up due to water pressure, but we didn't mind too much. My birthday occurred during our stay, and the resort did not disappoint. On our way back from dinner, we passed our maid who was like "oooohh I hope you have fun tonight!" We didn't know what she meant but thought she was just being really nice. When we got in the room, we were astonished. They decorated the room with balloons, chocolates and other things. They had a dessert tray which had Happy Birthday written on it in chocolate. They had also filled up the whirlpool tub with bubbles and provided us a with a bottle of champagne. It was a really amazing gesture to do all this and it definitely helped finish my birthday off on a great note. Overall, I would definitely recommend this resort to anyone going to DR, and would definitely go back again.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view room before you arrive. We had a breathtaking and expansive ocean view villa j...

We loved it here. The windy beach is windy, but the pools are great. Shame we had to book the restaurants a week in advance, but that's ok, you can work around it. But the buffet restaurant was really good. The service from the staff was amazing across the whole hotel. The best part was the 'public beach' I think the weekends are busy, but mid week it was empty and paradise, white sand turquoise sea, and lots fish if you take bread from the breakfast buffet for them.

We upgraded to a room in one of the villas and it was amazing, clean and very comfortable - would recommend. We travelled with first choice and upgraded to premium economy seat on the flight, expensive, but the economy service sounded rubbish and only 1 bottle of water thrown in for free on a 10hr flight, not good.

Not a great deal to do in the local area in terms of trips which meant you could relax. We did do a horse riding trip through First Choice and was not told that the cost did not include a tip for the horse owner, who was not getting any of the money we paid for the trip to First Choice. Also if you want to by something, you must haggle. Need to start at 20-25% of what they start at and probably end up nearer 45-40% of their starting point.

Please tip the staff, they all work so hard for nothing at all and the $1 here or there makes their day!
