The town of Samana is a great little area with a beautiful sidewalk called "Malecon" where you can stroll around the bayside area and watch boats. Its tree lined so its not too hot under the sun. There is a newly finished tourist area with shops and restaurants that is just across the street from the bay. Its colorful and is slowly filling up with vendors that have wonderful local art and crafts, and restaurants. There is also a small road near the 4 way intersection at the top of the hill coming into town (right side) that has a market everyday. You need to park and walk through the street vendors and then inside the large market place. There is fresh fish, veggies, vet supplies, and almost anything imaginable. They are not open on Sundays or holidays. Its rustic and local and interesting. There is only one grocery store in Samana that I could find but its sufficient for stocking up on boat supplies and snacks for a stay in town. There are several hotels overlooking the bay and one high end chain hotel that is impeccably detailed for all visitors.
Samana is a cute town to visit for a few hours or several days/weeks. Make sure to go during whale watching season as there are several guides who can take you close to see them in February.
