“Nice town and great views of the Samana Bay”
Reviewed November 11, 2012

The town of Samana is a great little area with a beautiful sidewalk called "Malecon" where you can stroll around the bayside area and watch boats. Its tree lined so its not too hot under the sun. There is a newly finished tourist area with shops and restaurants that is just across the street from the bay. Its colorful and is slowly filling up with vendors that have wonderful local art and crafts, and restaurants. There is also a small road near the 4 way intersection at the top of the hill coming into town (right side) that has a market everyday. You need to park and walk through the street vendors and then inside the large market place. There is fresh fish, veggies, vet supplies, and almost anything imaginable. They are not open on Sundays or holidays. Its rustic and local and interesting. There is only one grocery store in Samana that I could find but its sufficient for stocking up on boat supplies and snacks for a stay in town. There are several hotels overlooking the bay and one high end chain hotel that is impeccably detailed for all visitors.

Samana is a cute town to visit for a few hours or several days/weeks. Make sure to go during whale watching season as there are several guides who can take you close to see them in February.

“Worst cruise ship destination!”
Reviewed August 2, 2012

We stopped off here many years ago when it was first added to the cruise ships itineraries. At first sight it was filthy but the detritus including dead animals floating around the harbour was a clincher. We got off to browse the market stalls then got straight back on board. Other passengers wished they had done the same. The reports of being hassled by belligerent and aggressive hawkers were astonishing, but we heard it again and again. A Princess cruise we took changed the itinerary to include this port but when we and I presume other passengers complained they changed it back. People power. All-In Resorts in the rest of the country look wonderful, but give Samana a wide berth!

“VIP Tours, Whale Watching, Samana Bay”
Reviewed May 31, 2012

Whilst staying in La Romana, in February this year (2012), we decided to go on a couple of excursions. One of these we booked with a lovely guy called Hector through VIP tours, he came to the hotel each morning for people to book various different excursions.
We knew we were in the country at the right time of year for whale watching so promptly booked the tour for the first Saturday we were there on our honeymoon. Not expecting to be so lucky as to see whales let alone much else.
We woke early to be picked up at 6am, for the long drive from bayahibe over the mountains to Samana Bay. We were taken in a lovely air conditioned mini bus. We stopped after about an hour driving to get a drink, use the loo etc. This was seeing the real dominican, and was great to see. All the way on our journey our guide told us about the history of Dominican, the sugar beet plantations, how people live etc, which was really interesting, and made the journey more interesting. When we came into the mountains we were told about the mountain peoples way of life and how they actually fair better than the city folk. We stopped in the moutains to look at the view over the forests and a local girl handed out fruit to us, which tasted amazing!
On from there we had our last leg of the journey.
We got to Samana and watched the fisherman whilst we waited for the boat. A few young boys tried to sell us shells etc.
On the boat there were not too many people and refreshments were handed out which was great. We were out at sea for about an hour and beginning to think our luck was not in, until we both my husband and I suddenly saw a slight hump raise out the water quite a way from the boat, we both kind of stopped and starred. The boat went closer and surely enough there was a calf and two adults. They swam by the boats, the calf rolling in the water next to the boat and after about half an hour the mother fluked and took the calf away having had enough. It was magical and they did not seem too harrased.
There were the odd boats getting too close but soon moved away.
We were then taken to another part of the island for lunch and to relax on the beautiful beach there. Then back to Samana for the return journey.
Although it was a very long day it was all very much worth it, and if you can get a trip like this I would recommend it!
It was a day I will NEVER forget and very much recommend going with a small company not someone too big and commercial who will cram you in and upset the whales by getting too close.
