“I expected more...”
Reviewed February 1, 2013

This is going to be a hard review to write as the folks were very sweet and TRIED to accomodate our needs and issues...BUT this resort did not stack up to a 5 star experience! We had visited the Zoetry Paraiso De La Bonita and had preconcieved expectations going in to this resort!

Pros/Cons:
-friendly staff overall..
.. but at the end of the trip we were approached by several to 'remember their name', which we found out was due to the fact they wanted to be listed as 'favorite staff member' on the departure survey...of course this wasn't every staff member!

-grounds-
are beautiful and ocean has plenty of palapas and waitress was great-gardeners working daily to maintain but work is being done all around the complex (thatch roofs with tarps, weird scaffolding holding up the walkways and the bridge is in need of repair)

-food:
brick oven pizza was very good @ Indigo.... Olena restaurant has a tasty lobster roll and the vegetable stir fry with rice noodles was excellent. Room service food was good but we had some language barrier issues when ordering and had to send some things back, most of the time it was fixed but one night we never got any return with our food!

-Room:
we had a suite with the private plunge pool (which another reviewer described beautifully).....it was beautifully decorated, thatch roof is 'art' in itself..outdoor shower is awesome and loved the lizard visits but had some drawbacks....AC was lacking...front room was on 61 degrees and bedroom on 62...it was very damp and musty in both...we never were really comfortable and some nights it was cooler outside..our shower area had a leak which they said was OK...but day later it had rained and we were leaked on headed to the bathroom.... water was everywhere in that room like we had showered...coffee maker didn't work...

Daily service:
had to always ask to have minibar restocked and it wasn't stocked when we arrived....

Housekeeping:
Awesome...respected our SHHH sign and we were able to choose when we wanted service as we didn't want them in there 3 times a day.....they did a great job but did notice a few inconsistencies

CoCo Cafe:
Awesome...great cappuccino's and a sweet treat and Juan Hilario(sp) made the best and provided excellent service...2-3 a day

Spa:
great massage by Anna .....nice showers and environment...massage was outside in a draped room, private but tranquil garden in view...friends tried to use the sauna and hydrotherapy equipment but most didn't work!

Vendors by beach on a couple of nights:
We found these very annoying! You could not even walk 10 steps with out being hassled! Our room was in sight of the them and they would call out to us when we stepped out our front door just to look at the ocean...NOT what you want we you are trying to relax!

I do want to reiterate that the people of the Dominican are very nice!

We did discover that they are 'on their own time' and requests seem to be forgotten quite often although this could be the language barrier!

Sadly, I will personally recommend the Zoetry Paraiso De La Bonita over this one!

Taigüey / Greetings !

Dear guests:

We thank you for your stay and appreciated feedback - incl. postive comments, of course -, which we take as a favor to enhance our product/services -.

Apologizing for your perceived disapointment, please find our respective cooments, as follows:

- each Zoetry property is intrinsically different; these are not "template" hotels; stiil of course, we recongnize also that our constant benchmarking exercises with the other 2 Zoetry hotels, etc. can only make all of us better;

- We were surprised to hear that our team-mebers were apparently pushy, as to get mentioned positively on Trip Advisor; this seems to be a punctual situation and we are sorry; we have already addrssed this issue;

- We indeed sometimes have to exceptionally upkeep our charming wood and other natural materials that make up our unique hotel, at unplanned key times; all looks very well at present;

- The Dominican Republic is offcicially and practically a Spanish-speaking country; as to cater to many of our guests, the hotel provides our staff with daily English courses; we are sorry you suffered a bit translation-wise, while we are confident that our overall English level will keep improving;

- The Air conditioning, leak and coffee-maker issues you mentioned were duly tackled;

- Per our relevant tent-card sitting on top of our minibars, our guests can always call at anytime to have their minibar restocked; still, we apologize for not having had your minibar properly filled upon your arrival;

- Sorry about the Sauna & hydrotherapy matters; they have been fixed now;

- We have held a serious talk with the 3rd-party vendors; they now have understood that their approach must be really softer;

Should you need any additional information, please contact us at your convenience.

Meanwhile, we remain...Thanks again, best regards and expectantly till soon, as to please give us a chance to show you our true service level i.e. at least at par with Zoetry Paraiso de la Bonita.

Namaste,

I'm not really sure what the people who wrote the negative reviews expect from a resort, but we were very pleased by our experience. The staff is wonderful and could not try harder to make sure that you are happy and have everything you need. The resort itself is very quiet and far away from all the mega resorts which is what we want on a vacation. If you want to go on excursions they are available, but you can easily just stay on the grounds and enjoy relaxing at the beach, by the pool or in the spa. The time goes fast when you are waited on with such attentiveness!

There has been a lot said about mosquitos ... we did not get one single bite. I was very surprised by this actually judging by how often they are mentioned in the reviews, and since we are in the tropics, but we were not bitten at all. The hotel sprays daily and there is spray in your room as well.

The restaurants are nice. There is not a lot of variety and the menus are the same from day to day, but the food is good.

I'm not sure what was going on with a previous reviewer you said that the staff begs for tips. That could not be further from our experience! Everyone that we came across was very helpful and very concerned that we were well taken care of. Nobody was looking for tips. If they were, I didn't notice, and I didn't notice a change in anyone if we didn't tip. The staff is wonderful and I just wish that we had brought more money so that I could tip them as much as they deserved!
The hardest part of filling out the questionnaire when you check out is that they want to know your favorite employee. There is no way that you can just choose one so I would like to single out a few now that made our experience what it was --- Juan Hilario, Andre, Diego from the lobby bar, Aurelio, Alejandra, Fernando, Hector, Juan P from the restaurants and Ana Julia who did such a good job keeping our room clean no matter how much sand we dragged in behind us each day.

Everything was not perfect, but the problems were quickly addressed. Our roof leaked, but the next morning someone was there to fix it. Our cable went out during a storm, but the same day the cable company came out and fixed it. Everything that went wrong was quickly fixed. What more can you ask for really?

The manager Alain does a good job and it shows in his staff and their attitudes. If we find ourselves back in the Dominican Republic, we will definitely stay at Zoetry Agua again!

My husband and I were staying at Dreams Punta Cana and were given an opportunity to spend a night at Zoetry. We had briefly visited the resort for a timeshare presentation and thought it was great. We said that we would like to spend our next vacation there. When we were offered a night there we decided to go. It is a beautiful resort and we felt like we were at a spa. It is quiet and serene. The rooms are lovely and we had a balcony overlooking the pool. The food in the restaurant where we ate was very good and service was excellent. We are thinking of returning there for a few days for my birthday in December. I would recommend this to anyone who would like to go to a quiet, restful resort.

Room Tip: We were on the second floor and loved having a balcony. The second floor can only be accessed by st...

Zoetry

We stayed at Zoetry for eight nights from Jan 18 to Jan 26. This was our 4th time at this resort but until this year we always stayed 4 nights. To start, I would highly recommend this resort with the understanding that it is a tropical resort, not a cookie cutter all/inclusive. The resort is laid back and made for relaxing but this year the resort was a little more active. Two entertainment team members, shuttles to Dreams PC for shows, 2 special dinners, the beach party, plus the new Wellness Program gives you plenty to do but in a very relaxed mode. Great food, beautiful beach with many Palapas, calm, clear water, an infinity pool, beautiful rooms, beautiful Spa, shops, Coffee Cafe, etc. and just a great staff to take care of anything you want.
This is a small but very different type of resort than any other in Punta Cana. It is rustic, classy, beautiful but with that true tropical feel come with some tropical challenges.
The walkways give the resort the “tree house” feel but they are irregular. Flat shoes must be worn even though new stairways have been added and parts of the main walkway have been closed. These stairs make it much better to go to the rooms. The thatch on the roofs has been replaced on many units but some still remain to be repaired. We didn't have hot water one night but the rest of the 8 nights plenty of hot water and high pressure. The pool is painted concrete and has some spots that need to be repaired. The resort can have mosquitoes but spray is available, just spray and you are fine. We didn't have any problems with mosquitoes or any bugs for that matter. These are some of the objections I have read in other reviews. But after staying for 8 nights, I realized that I like the tropical feel and the wonderful service offered by every employee. I like the irregular wooded walkways, the remoteness and privacy of the resort.

The reef in front provides clear, calm water. No sea grass or very little. Rough water is on both sides of the resort so this is a very prime location. Many palapas and chairs. One of the most beautiful beaches I have seen. Very impressive standing in the infinity pool looking out at the ocean. 3 pools, the main infinity pool which is in all the pictures. 2 pools that serpentine in front of most of the lower rooms.

Children are allowed but in 4 trips I have never seen one.

Pros:
I want to mention the staff as a whole and say that for guests, the employees do everything to make your vacation special. Ask anyone for something and they will take care of you or will get someone to. Service at dinner was perfect. Maid service was 3 times a day and the room was spotless and plenty of huge , soft towels and amenities.
Food was very, very good. There are 3 restaurants at the front , middle and on the beach of the resort. One is closed each night. One is the main breakfast restaurant. A Sunday buffet is beachfront. 24 hour Room service is quick and food served was hot and good. Food excels but there are always a few exceptions but that would be typical for any fine restaurant or just personal preference. Lobster (a whole lobster tail, not Caribbean Lobster), steaks, pasta, salads, shrimps and seafood all exceptional all inclusive food. Only negative is sometimes the meat doneness was not as ordered.
Authors dinner is in a group setting with a 5 course dinner that changes weekly and was delicious. The wine pairing dinner is food matched with wine. The GM explains the wines with a presentation for each course and tells why the wine is matched with each course. Wine is decanted to breath and the pairings are very enjoyable. Again 5 excellent courses. Try the wood fired pizza at lunch along with a beach grill as well as the menu items in the open-air, beachfront restaurant. The Chefs are very proud of what they make and the presentation of the food is beautiful. Coco Cafe open all day for espresso’s, coffee, cakes etc. Choice of about 6 different wines, all better than the average all-inclusive. Wine menu available to purchase better wines, also a wine special each day for purchase.

Rooms are beautiful, large, all great locations, champagne every day, welcome bottle of rum, welcome beach bag, rooms are style of tropical elegance. A/C was very cool, had to keep turning the fan down. Most of the lower rooms are swim out or oceanfront and the upper rooms have better views. Can't go wrong with any of the rooms. They also have some villas which I haven't been in but are on the right side of the resort.

The Wellness Program designed to relax you both mentally and physically is unlike anything I have seen at other resorts. Yoga/relaxation offered at 9:15 is very thorough and tailored to each student's level, and then followed by a different meditation each morning. Guests can also take advantage of a 20 minute wellness consultation.
A beautiful Spa with a large wet area for everyone's use includes a pool, hot tubs, different types of showers, saunas, steam room etc.
Lobby bar which stays very busy at night with the Zoetry band playing at night. The band is very good and plays through the restaurants during dinner. Entertaining bartenders and the lobby, with cushioned sofas, comfortable chairs to relax and enjoy a drink , some music or just chat.

Good daily entertainment while still keeping the resort quiet and laid back. Yoga, stretching, water aerobics, Spanish lessons, cooking displays, drum lessons, horseback riding, cocktail lessons, etc
A game room with a nice pool table and TV plus games and books.
Free laundry service.
Free 20 min massage.
Free phone calling.
Free Internet.
Free WiFi.
Free shuttles to Dreams at night for shows.

All activities are listed in the nightly newsletter left in your room. The 2 special dinners are by invitation so respond quickly as they fill up.

Cons:
The cigar rolling by the pool is a nuisance.
Some dinners the meat was not cooked to desired doneness but still very good.
Still patching some of the thatched roofs.
Not thrilled with the “Over the Top” motto.
The hot tub was not working properly and they were waiting for a part to be repaired.

Almost everyone I chatted with just loved the resort, many said it was the best resort they have been to and some were pretty well traveled. Heard of no complaints besides a dish being too salty or something small. This resort is not for everyone but for those who are looking for the Caribbean feel and to be pampered and want to just relax and chill out then Zoetry is a really wonderful resort. I thought 8 night would be too long but not at all. If you do the 2 special dinners, the beach party, and dine at each of the 3 restaurants that is 6 nights before you repeat a restaurant! Plus you can go to Dreams Punta Cana which is about 7 mins away. We took a walk to Excellence, which we have stayed at 3 times when it was a Secrets. We thought that was more laid back than other resorts but after walking through we couldn't wait to get back to Zoetry. I would like to mention specific members of the staff but just can't. We got to meet everyone from the chefs, front desk, entertainment guys, Wellness People, servers, the GM, maids, all were just great and want to mention them all as a group. There is not a person that walks by you and doesn't smile, says hola and checks to make sure everything is OK. To leave one out would not be fair.
We look forward to returning to Zoetry and if you have questions my e mail is bbgamer1@yahoo.com.

Zoetry is a great resort, the food was wonderful, staff was friendly, helpful and the resort itself was beautiful. The only comment I would make is that you will need to use the mosquito bug spray that is in your room. They spray at the resort, but you will need to use the spray in addition.
The rooms are very nice, clean and kept up. The spa was very enjoyable also.

I just had to share my recent experience with this exquisite resort. This is not the place for everyone. If you like lots of loud music, glitzy environs and splashy style then look elsewhere. If you like an island paradise unspoiled my commercialism with an emphasis on romance, wellness and peace then this is where you should head. The setting is like the Garden of Eden with thatched roofs and suspended walkways. Your room looks like it was pulled from an advertisment for Tahiti many with small private pools in front. The spa is reasonable and one of the best and the food is sublime with an imaginative chef who really cares that his guests are served something special at all times. The beach is beautiful with crashing waves in the winter and calmer waters in the summer. Beautiful to sleep to. But what really shines at this small gem is the service. You would be hard pressed to find service like this even at a Four Seasons. They are always going out of their way to make you feel like you are the most important guests there. You leave with a feeling of entering another world of zen-like peace and delight. I hesitate to share this as I would like to keep this small piece of bliss to only a deserving few. I would recommend this to singles, couples and even families with children (or grown children) who do not need a kids club and can be entertained by nature and beach.

If I could, I'd give Zoetry 2.5 stars; a middle-of-the-road conclusion to a trip that was at times exceptional and at others, annoying.

To explain our Zoetry experience, we have to start at the beginning and transgress through the entire trip (all the way to today, where I sit in my home with turkey trots/montezuma's revenge that started abruptly yesterday morning while we were still at the resort.)

I researched the h-e-double-hockey-sticks out of this place. My wife and I had never before stayed in an all-inclusive resort but we had a few 'musts' - small, relaxing, adults-only, no buffets, etc. We didn't want the mega resort feel, so when I found Zoetry, bells and whistles rang for me. I think a unicorn even appeared before me and winked its eye agreeing that this.was.the.place.to.go.

We arrived on Jan. 21 at 2:30 p.m. and were greeted with fresh, cold, lavender hand towels and passionfruit juice. The manager explained we were being given an upgrade - from our garden-view junior suite to the property's taino suite. As he walked us through the gorgeous property, we melted. The grounds were impeccable, the open-air design beautiful and the pools glimmering in the sun.

When we walked into the taino suite (#26), we were overcome with excitement. The entry room was a huge living area with a dining table and sofa. Walking through it, there was a door which lead outside to our own private plunge pool and two lounge chairs (!!) and then, the bedroom door which must be unlocked with the key, again. The bedroom was huge - a king bed sat squarely in the middle and a TV, dresser, etc., sat around the room. Another door led to the bathroom's sinks, closets and mini bar. From there, another door led to our private, outdoor soaking tub and shower. From that room, another door went into the bathroom which was equipped with a toilet and bidet.

After the manager left, we literally jumped up and down in joy at this amazing upgrade. We felt so lucky.

To be a little less detailed, the room lost its charm over the next few days. A bug was burrowing in the thatched ceiling and left a mess of dirty muddy crumbs all over the floor and dresser all day, every day. We spoke with management about this, but nothing was resolved. Our shower was either BOILING hot or freezing cold - and one day, there was no water whatsoever across the ENTIRE resort. (We were given a 50-minute couples massage as an apology from the manager, which was lovely.) The maid for room 26 was lackluster if not bad. The minibar was restocked only once or twice during our days in the taino; plates of food were picked up from our dining room and simply left out on our cement stoop (which ants just LOVED); our towels for our lounges were never replaced and one day; our room wasn't cleaned at all.

"Well, whatever...," we said. We were there for the beach, sun, food and drinks.

After an excursion one day, we were greeted by the manager who, as an apology for the lack of hot water (which wasn't the issue... the issue was NO WATER), offered us the massage and informed us that since we had booked a junior swim-up suite and had been upgraded, we needed to move to the junior suite after all (obviously someone who paid for that room was arriving haha). Not a problem. We were actually relieved - no more dark, dingy bedroom of the taino, no more walking through three doors to get to the bathroom, etc. We packed up and the manager said they'd move our things to our new room and bring us our keys while we lounged on the beach. They never brought the keys because they forgot to move our stuff - which is an overall theme at Zoetry (forgetting to do things when asked), which I'll go into later. (Like forgetting we said there was 'no water' vs. no 'hot' water...)

Our new room was better than the expansive, dank taino. The swim-up junior suite was modern, BRIGHT, the a/c worked wonderfully and our maid was amazing (she made us a huge butterfly with rose petals out of our curtains, a swan out of our bed runner, cleaned multiple times a day, always brought us towels, etc. Five stars to her - room #5 - as she was above and beyond.) We looked at each other after settling in and admitted we wished we would have been in this room all along.

Then the ceiling burst open with a flood of water.

I'm not talking drips. I'm not talking a slight leak. I'm talking a waterfall of water pouring out of the ceiling over our bathroom sinks. I almost lost it. I called the front desk and asked for someone to come immediately - they didn't. So my wife, who is Chilean and speaks fluent Spanish (thank God - because there ARE language barriers despite what others say.) walked up to the front desk and asked for someone to come to our room... they said someone had already come. Hmmm. Nope. (Another 'forgetful' moment?) I called back and said no, no one had showed up. Finally 5 maintenance men came marching up - who knows what was wrong. They removed the ceiling section and a ton of duct tape was holding everything together. Luckily, it was dinner time so we asked for a few minutes to get ready and hoped they would have it all fixed when we got back. They did. Phew.

Until 7 a.m. when the bathroom ceiling erupted with water. At this point, I had had enough. We went to the beach and hoped the maid would alert maintenance, which she did, and when we came back, it was fixed...

It was around this time, 5 days into our trip, that the issues started to wear on us.

Twice we had to call and chase-up our laundry which was pushing 48 hours instead of 24.

The staff at Zoetry is either 'over the top' or don't really give a rat's rear if they're nice or not. Which, speaking of 'over the top' - the canned phrase rubbed me wrong. Just let your staff say 'good' or 'ok' or 'great.' There's no way these people are 'over the top' waiting on privileged people who get to visit Zoetry while they work 11 days in a row (to get 3 off).

Then there's the whole 'forgetful' or 'not understanding' aspect of nearly everyone at Zoetry. As I said, my wife is fluent in Spanish - was born and raised in Chile - and she spoke in Spanish with everyone. That didn't really matter, though. We booked an excursion and somewhere along the way someone messed up because the company never picked us up and we instead were greeted by a guy in his personal car who drove like a maniac to get us to the bus that was already halfway to the jungle. Then there was the whole room switch which was confusing. We were told we'd be brought change for a $20 which never happened. They forgot to inform the entire resort that water would be shut off at 10 am one morning (really?! REALLY?!) ("You have to tell us when these things are going to happen! We look like idiots!" the GM said in Spanish on the phone when he called maintenance to see what was up.) And the list goes on.

But the kicker - the real butt-kicker - is the e.coli or similar food poisoning I received while staying at Zoetry. We only ate and drank at Zoetry all day, every day and I woke up yesterday morning doubled over in pain with the worst nausea and diarrhea ever. I still have it although I'm trying to flush it out as best as possible. (Could it have been the nearly grey shrimp from the bbq that afternoon? Or the possibly undercooked chicken from the same place? The chefs on the open-air bbqs need to be much more careful with internal food temperatures and properly cooking seafood/meat on the grills. More than once I received undercooked chicken and shrimp.)

Up until that moment, though, I did enjoy every bit of food I had. The Friday evening beach dinner was one of the most amazing parts of the trip. The flavors were delicious and most of what we received, very fresh. Room service was fast. Drinks were strong. Beer selection was poor. (Corona and Presidente at the bars, Heineken in your mini fridge.) The daily bottle of champagne was a classy touch - one we indulged in many times only to wake with champagne headaches hours later. That's our fault, though.

The pools were pristine, the grounds amazing, the spa lovely. Some of the staff were great, some overbearing, some indifferent. I really enjoyed the morning yoga and my wife loved the horseback riding.

So, while the pros of Zoetry were strong in the beginning, the shine started to wear off, unfortunately. The taino rooms need an overhaul; a good paint job, increase in lighting and general maintenance. While they do fumigate, the bugs are an issue (wife has about 25-30 welts still today), but, whatever... we all go there reading about the bugs. Nothing we can do about that. The beach is on the Atlantic side, so don't expect Caribbean blue water, and yes, the sand has twigs… it's a beach, with palm trees… not a big deal to us.

But in the end, our trip went from 5 stars to 2.5, which was unfortunate. Would we go back to Zoetry? No. But I hope that those of you who are booked or who are thinking of booking experience a much better 'endless privileged' visit than we did.

Dear Guests:

We thank you for your review - incl. positive comments - & apologize for the inconveniences you encountered.

We hope you are feeling better physically / Potentially carrying NoroVirus already from the US and then starting to suffer from it back home after a few days here, could actually correspond to the incubation period... Anyway, as a small precision in this sense is warranted (sourced from WikiPedia):

Montezuma's revenge (var. Moctezuma's revenge) is the colloquial term for any cases of traveler's diarrhea contracted by tourists visiting Mexico. The name refers to Moctezuma II (1466–1520), the Tlatoani (ruler) of the Aztec civilization who was defeated by Hernán Cortés, the Spanish conquistador.

We are in the Dominican Republic...where insects live, as is the case in also Spanish-speaking Mexico and Chile too, as well as most everywhere else on this Planet - even in the Atacama desert...

At our establishment, we do not move people just because somebody else paid for the room they are in - just like I not being a Airline Pilot, would never dare to assume to know all about what goes on in the cockpit...

We are sorry about the already-fixed Water issues and are glad you enjoyed the massage; we addressed our team-members on the lack of execution you pointed out too...we also are sorry about the leak and laundry problems; these were karmically taken care of fully.

Our staff's working hours are perfectly legal and arranged to cater for the time needed for them to go home.

Excursions are provided by 3rd party companies and the final decision to accordingly book them/go is always freewillingly up to our guests.

Thank you again and all the best for your next stay, perhaps at a more aseptic facility.

Best regards,
