After a 4 hour delay in Toronto we were relieved that the property we arrived at was better than expected . Mostly due to the staff. There was not a bad experience during the entire vacation . The management and staff are obviously proud of their roles .
We first met Yinna at the front desk , she is so friendly and greeted us daily with a smile . So many people were friendly it is hard to remember every name ( even with notes ) Carlos who spent most of the week at the pool bar always had the crowd laughing and not waiting. Moses serving us in the morning new our names after the first meal and used them on us daily . Niaki ( Nike ) was another favourite that greeted us with smiles and we cant forget Jorge.
The beach may be a little small but it was easy to walk in and see many different fish . Drinks and bottled were also served here as well as anywhere else you happened to be. The fresh juice bar at the beach was another great touch. We will be returning to this hotel likely sooner than later.

Room Tip: Building 44 was perfect close to everything but a little farther walk to the beach . A nice walk tho...

We just got back from the Catalonia Royal Bavaro two weeks ago. I really enjoyed our time there. The beach is very nice ( a little sea-weedy ) and the water is perfect! Incredible service from all that are employed there. Hector, Daniel, and Roberto were especially friendly and engaging at the Sea Blue bar, and on the beach. They treat you like a special guest, and really remember what you like! Grounds were very nice, and I truly appreciated that the hotel was not a high-rise. It was a short walk to the beach in one direction, and a short walk to the lobby in the other direction. It was also nice to go to the family side for some entertainment, and then to be able to go back to our side for the quiet and solitude. Food was good to average...the steak house on the family side was bad....just really bad. :( However, Sea Blue was amazing....Best salmon I've ever had! If I had one comlaint, it was that the refridgerator was not re-stocked daily...it was kind of hit and miss. Would I go back again? In a heartbeat! Enjoy!

Room Tip: Upgrade to the Junior Superior suites....not much more $, but definitely worth it for the location.

I traveled to this resort with my cousin and 84 year old mother who uses a walker and has difficulty walking. The resort was perfect for her logistically and provided her with a comfortable, safe setting. We were able to get mom and her walker onto the beach and if we hadn't been able to do it ourselves, the staff would have jumped at the opportunity to assist. There are too many excellent staff members to name but we are especially thankful for the assistance of Alexandros, Rueben, Lorenzo, Ana and Moises. The concierge ( I am sorry but I can't remember your name but you were 29 and short with long, dark hair) as well as the bar tender at the beach were so gracious and are exemplary employees. It was the people who made our visit so inviting as much as the sun, warmth, pools, restaurants (all food was excellent with a great deal of variety) and general atmosphere.
My mother was treated like royalty and they quickly to help seat her and get her walker. Mom was nervous about traveling south but this feeling disappeared after a day when they kept calling her "mama" and showed her such respect. I know if she is able, we would certainly return and recommend this resort to others.
The only recommendations we would suggest are more light in the rooms as they seemed dark and more hooks and racks on which to hang wet clothes.

Room Tip: We had villa 44 which was close to the pool for my mother and we were on the ground floor. I would r...

This is our 3rd time traveling to the Dominican Republic. This was our first time at the Catalonia Royal Bavaro. We stayed on the Adults only side. We ate at mostly restaurants for the duration of our trip. The rooms are very spacious and beautiful. Very clean with beautiful decor. Every balcony comes with a hammock which was nice to use in the mornings. The beach is beautiful! One of the reasons we picked this resort (not only for it's great reviews) was because of the reef right in front of it. We spend hours snorkeling. Lots of beautiful tropical fish. We even swam further and encountered a barracuda! Pretty scary looking fish but harmless to humans.
We enjoyed our stay very much.
The only con.... the extremely pushy time share people. They try to lure you in with an advertisement for a $1000 dollar gift. My parents unfortunately were scammed by these people and bought time shares, only to later find out that they could only use them at certain times of the year and if you wanted to book a trip you would have to book it at least 2 years in advance. Anyways just a warning.
Amazing resort.

Just returned from a one week stay at the Royal Catalonia ... with a group of Friends (7 couples)
If you are looking for an Adult only, quiet resort ... this is the place for you ..
All the activities were at the sister resort Catalonia Bavaro ... which we did have privileges
From the lobby to the beach is no more than a five minutes walk...
Beach had plenty of lounge chairs and lots of shade ... (you might want to save some lounge chairs though ... there were still many available at 10am so you don't have to rush down at sunrise unless you want the beach front) .... pool chair went pretty quick but I didnt spend any time at either pool ... they were both great though ...
Meals were delicious ,,, and the best part .. no reservations required ...
We typically had dinner around 7pm ... no waiting and service was great ...
Shout out to Freddy Number 1 .... Freddy Krugger at the Rodeo Steakhouse ... he was the best server I have ever met ...
Front desk ... Breney, Hector and Daysi ... ask and you shall receive ... all were very accomodating and pleasant
Piano Bar ... Jorge ... Service with a smile .... if you were standing at the bar for more than 5 seconds ... he would be there asking if someone has looked after you ...
Beach Service ... if you didn't want to walk to the beach bar ... which was not very far ... Zuleiny and Hector were willing to bring your drinks to you ...
Rooms were excellent ... I asked for more pillows (choice of what kind of pillow too! ... Pillow Menu!) and a mattress pad from the front desk crew ... delivery to my room was within 30 minutes.
Housekeeping had our rooms made up before noon everyday ...
Food ... again it was excellent .... we tried the Italian, Japanese, Steakhourse (twice), Grand Buffet on the other resort, Thalassa and Sea Blue on the Royal side ...
Grand Buffet was extremely clean for its size and number of people parading though ...
Beach BBQ (Thursday night) on our side ... was nothing special ... it had rained that night so they may have toned it down ....
The men wearing long pants rule seemed to only apply on the Royal side ... no one was turned away at the restaurants on the Catalonia Bavaro side ... but at Thalassa and Cata Tapas .. yes for sure ... Ladies ... casual is fine ... just no beach wear ...
Like the title says ...if you are here to relax ... this is the place ... so my review is also based on someone who likes to chill and is not a food critic by any means ... I was pleased with all the services I received and would definitely return to the Royal Catalonia ,,,,

Room Tip: Building 36 and 38 had very "opened" concept design .... showers were in the middle of the...

This hotel is generally of good standard but suffers from inconsistencies with services provided for a 5* hotel. We had made many trips around the world so are in a good position to know what to expect. This is an adult only hotel but unfortunately many of the restaurants and facilities are only available within the sister hotel which is a very large complex, very full when we where there and lots of families with children. If you choose an adult only hotel then that's what you are looking for, you are wanting to share with a lot of families and their children.
The restaurants on site are of good standard but at times the waiting is too long and the food average. Breakfast was poor, especially the a la carte, their view of scrambled eggs was to fry your eggs then chop them up. There are very few facilities on site but the 2 pools are good, except of course the swim up bar at one pool which becomes a watering hole for loud, rude and drunk americans on vacation. (nothing new in the Caribbean). There is no means to change money on site but there is a very small bank at the sister hotel but the queues are long and everything is in triplicate so takes loads of time. The gym is very poor. The size is very small, the equipment is dated and 2 machines were broken and one was dangerous. The beach was great however with loads of palm trees giving shade from the mid day sun. If you want real service, great facilities and good food spend a little more and go down the road and stay at Excellence.
This hotel is overpriced for what you get!

Room Tip: Stay away from blocks 18 and 19. 39, 40, 41, 42 are good. Ask for a view onto the pools or spa

My husband and I went to this resort with 5 other friends, 2 of whom were celebrating their birthdays. The rooms were large, clean and for the most part well maintained (apart from a few cracks in the bathroom mirror, and a bathroom door that would not completely close). The food was very good, particularly the breakfast buffet. It should be noted that when you stay here, you have complete access to all the facilities of the family-friendly Catalonia Bavaro Beach next door, but those who stay there cannot come over to the Catalonia Royal Bavaro. This is important since once the screaming kids and rowdy spring breakers get on your nerves, you can always escape to the quiet of your adults-only facility. Room service was quick and efficient. The room fridge was always well stocked (including beer). The piano bar was open until around midnight.

2 minor irritations:
1. We agreed to a "free one hour tour" of the facilities when approached by a "concierge" only to find out it was actually a THREE-PLUS HOUR sales pitch to join the Catalonia Executive Travelers program. Everyone was nice enough, but really...no means no.
2. We pre-paid for arrival and departure airport transfers through Viator. When the driver picked us up on the day we were leaving, our vehicle was held at the gate by the guards. 2 men, who can only assume were part of the resort's "official airport transfer group" harassed our driver and would not let up until I presented my voucher for the transfer. Are we not allowed to book outside transfers?

Room Tip: I would choose a room away from the main pool areas as these can get a bit noisy.
