This is our second tour here, loved it again! This time we brought in friends who also found it more intimate and friendlier than our last year vacation in Mexico. We enjoyed the gin tonic Roberto so expertly prepared at the beach bar. We had great food at lunch time or at dinner at the Thalassa, with Julia and Risswy taking care of our whimsies always with a smile on their face. Daniel, one of the guys at the Sea Blue bar fixed a very good cappuccino sin canella. The only complaint we had was that their coffee machine was up and running only after 10:30, because they open at 10:00. And we also recommend the Cata Tapa restaurant where Cecilia served us promptly with grace and good humour. We heard some people complained about the AC, we never had problems. We didn't have problems with Mosquitos, the sand is very fine so we did not need water shoes. The drinks: vodka absolut, stolly, Smirnoff, Johnny walker, gin beefeater, tanqueray, Ron brugal and their best: Barcelo imperial. They are generous with the alcohol in the mixed drinks, so it is your responsibility to manage to get to your room at the end of the day.

Room Tip: We stayed on the first floor, facing the fountains-our friends on the garden side had better wifi co...

came back yesterday from 10 days at catalonia royal and i am falling into a deep state of depression.
I WANT TO GO BACK!!
pros: the restaurants, the pool beds, the staff, Miguel at Thalassa (he deserves a bonus), the short jaunt to the airport, the serenity, not overcrowded, mature, quiet atmosphere.
cons: the a/c in the room at 3 in the morning was little to none.

advice to future guests: some pool areas are meant to be more boisterous than others. HINT: Look around.... are people reading and talking quietly to one and other? Thats probably the quiet area. If you tend to be a loud person(group), the pool with the swim up bar where they play merengue music would be a more appropriate choice.

On our first trip to the DR three years ago we stayed at Catalonia Royal and were very impressed, but still decided to try a few other resorts for our next few trips - just to see what else there was. We found other nice places, but nowhere we enjoyed as much or suited us so well, so we returned this year. We enjoyed it even more this time, and so much more than other resorts we tried that we will keep coming back.

We stayed 10 days February 1 to 10.

The royal side of the resort is small and relatively compact and has a very welcoming, relaxing, fun and graceful vibe. While always making you feel like everything is easy and fun, the service is very professional and friendly. They seem to know how how to respond to different guests' tastes - some more party, others quieter. There are no organized activities on the Royal side (which lends to its peaceful feeling), except for the Thursday night beach party, which was really fun for dancing. But with full and easy access to the sister Catalonia resort and the evening entertainment shows, casino, and disco, there are lots of choices.

Overall, we find the food much better than most places we have been. The bonus of having table service (not buffet) for lunch and dinner, and no reservations needed anywhere suits us very well. They have added 2 new restaurants - one for lunch and one for dinner, both in the same place by the swim-up pool. For lunch it is a wood-oven pizza place with good thin crust pizzas and salads. By night it turns into a Thai restaurant. While it is more "Thai-inspired", it is still good food. Both are a welcome addition to the other good lunch and dinner choices on the Royal side for added variety.

Our room was in building 36, nearest the beach, and was large and comfortable and perfectly clean all the time. Everything worked - no issue with AC or hot water. On our last visit there were a lot of power outages - didn't happen once this time, so seems that issue has been fixed.

The beach is gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous and kept that way - they are always tidying and raking up seagrass. There are always lots of chairs no matter what time you arrive. The shade palapas are taken (or have towels on them) somewhat early, but if you like shade there are still lots of palm trees - you always have to move with the sun anyway, even with a palapa. The sea is very calm and wonderful for floating and swimming. We prefer the beach, so didn't try the pools except a few times later in the afternoon. It seemed most chairs by both pools, but especially the double loungers by the infinity pool and the loungers by the swim-up bar pool, were booked early so if that is your thing, be prepared.

This is such an easy place to relax - a beautiful place and everyone working there seems genuinely interested in making sure you enjoy.

We will definitely be back - many more times.

This was my first trip to an all-inclusive hotel (I stayed on the "adults" side) and I was delighted with my stay at Catalonia. There are no games here-- all the restaurants on both sides and all drinks are included. There is a not a ton of entertainment at the hotel but it is right on a gorgeous beach and the pools and meticulously kept grounds are lovely and entertaining enough.

Some of the food was hit or miss (which is probably true for any large resort) but overall it was fresh and varied.

What I really can't say enough about is the staff. Everyone was so genuinely warm, friendly, welcoming and helpful.

I hope to go back next winter.

My husband and I stayed at the Catalonia Royal Bavaro Feb 1st-8th 2014. We had a great time. The weather was beyond gorgeous. Even when it rained it only lasted a few minutes then the sun was out again.

THE ROOM: we got the Deluxe Junior Suite and it was very nice and large. The room did have a musty smell as noted by some other reviewers but that's the moist tropical weather, nothing you can do about that. The airconditioner worked great. We had a problem with the safe not working (dead battery) but it was quickly resolved with a call to the concierge. The hot water in the bath tub did not work, I let them know when they called to see how everything was. They said they would send a technician but no one came. That was on our last day anyway so we weren't in a hurry to get it fixed. We never had a problem with the hot water in the shower, always worked great no matter what time we showered. The housekeepers were great. Fresh towels everyday and it was kept nice and clean. I left a tip everyday and a little note in Spanish to thank her and request beer/water. My requests were always granted. Room service was always fast. There were a few repairs that were done a little on the cheap/quick side. It wasn't a good impression but certainly did not spoil our stay.

THE FOOD: was incredible. We especially loved the Cata Tapa, the Sorrento pizzeria and the Tao Cat Thai restaurant. Service can be a bit slow in the restaurants but hey, it's not like we have anything else to do. They go at a much slower pace down there than in Canada. We tried all the restaurants on the Royal side and everything was delicious and well presented. We only tried the Mexican restaurant on the family side and it was a little disappointing. Not bad, just not great. We heard many say the food is much better on the Royal side anyway.

BARS: service was good, especially around the infinity pool, I didn't have to get up from my canopy bed! Edward was always there with a drink and a smile. Tips help ;) At the Sea Blue, make sure to say hello to Andis, he is a great bartender. My favourites were the Banana Mama and the Dominican Beach. The Larimar was also yummy. Don't forget to try the Pina Coladas at the lobby bar - amazing! There is a fresh fruit smoothie bar on the beach. They were out of bananas the day we went there, disappointing. But our drink was still good.

We spent most of our time at the infinity pool and one day on the beach. The beach was lovely, plenty of chairs and palapas. The friendly staff worked very hard cleaning the seaweed each day. Hats off to them. If you want to get a prime spot by the pool, you need to get up before 7am to claim it with your towel. I know this seems unfair, but it seemed to be the unwritten rule and no one messed with it. I found all the other guests to be friendly and respectful. We met some awesome people there as well, hope to keep in touch.

One day during the week they allow some vendors on the property. They are very pushy and insist on you buying something. They will high ball the price way out there so be sure to talk them way down or you will get ripped off. There are some shops on the beach, also very pushy. There's also some boutiques in between the Royal and family side. Those are nice. The prices weren't terrible. I will pay a little more to not be hassled.
They will also expect you to attend a "meeting" in the lobby likely the first or second day you are there. They are trying to sell you a time share of sorts. You are not required to attend. I didn't. They stopped us later to tell us about it, but we just said we weren't interested and that was the end of it. They stopped us on the family side too, but again, we said no and that was it.
They will also get you to take excursions, if you are interested go ahead. We really just wanted to relax so we did not buy any. They seemed overpriced anyway.
My husband golfed twice. It was included with our Nolitours package. He just had to pay $35 for the cart. He said it was a really nice course.

Overall a really great vacation. We will definitely think about returning here next year. Please don't dismiss this place due to a few complainers. There is no pleasing some people. It was really a great resort for the price and when all else fails, it sure beats the Canadian winter!

Room Tip: Choose a room facing in towards the pools, much better view. We had a ground floor and I'm glad...

Booked this vacation end of October so had a lot of buildup and anticipation so keep that in mind as you read further. I had emailed two weeks ahead of arrival to request a room facing the pool (inner area) and they had emailed me back to confirm my arrival dates and that they could accommodate us. (Plus comments on Facebook about our anticipation)I had read all the reviews on Trip advisor and went with the majority about location.
We arrived just after 10pm but had to wait for a large group that each had golf clubs and they had trouble fitting them all in the bus so it was midnight before we got to the hotel which is a 20 minute drive. Quick to get off the bus to be at check in before golfers. No welcome drink or cool cloth to meet us which was easy to overlook as it was midnight after all. When asked if our room was facing pool was told no,even when I said we had confirmation, they said no "100% Full, check back every day if we wanted to change our room" Then he pointed and said our room is that way! Really!! No busboy we were left to our own after a downpour to try to find our room on our own(nothing a margarita wouldn't fix however we were told all bars were closed and we would have to go to the adjacent resorts disco to get any kind of a drink. Found our building and our room was on the 3rd floor no prob as were both in great shape but not with 100 lbs of luggage to carry. My husband started making the various trips up the stairs as I flagged down one of the workers going by on a bicycle to give a hand. Once in our room there was a distinct smell but after a few days of periodically open doors it seemed to dissipate. We immediately could hear running water and soon discovered that toilet was running and would not flush, tried to fix on our own but eventually called reception only to have someone pick up the phone and hang up!
Next morning went to reception to try to clear up things and they did get someone to fix our toilet that same day but wanted to know why we had no bracelets. We told them about the unfortunate reception we received but they kept insisting we should have got a bracelet , eventually it was realized they had not given one the night before felt like it was probably our fault.
Found a perfect spot by the infinite pool the next morn which we kept for the entire 11 days. Tried the Sea blue for lunch on first day and when we went to find someone to seat us nobody was there after about 3 minutes we sat ourselves. Big mistake!!! We were approached by a young woman who said she was the hostess and was supposed to seat us but would overlook it this time (we were then ignored and had to find our own drinks and flag down someone for food)Still smiling though as the sun was shining.
Food - average. Tried next door resort and enjoyed the Japanese although they do try to keep you on a schedule and want you out when the show was over. Tried the Italian which was average but a madhouse and these wait staff only have one speed "overdrive". Funny to watch them as if they had roller skates on racing around, but does not create a great ambiance .Skip the other side buffet, so busy and they obviously have trouble keeping up with the cleanliness. On the royal side Tapas was ok but you seemed to get only half a meal as the appetizer menu was set and seemed everyone only enjoyed half the selection. Ribs weren't bad. Enjoyed the Sea Blue near the water. Lobster as part of all inclusive which you pay $20 US at Thallasa restaurant. Mind you it's not Maratime lobster but is still lobster. Really enjoyed the Thallasa restaurant as they changed menu everynight. Salmon was great. You have to try the pizza place for lunch (Thai at night) we ate there 3 times and not disappointed.
Rooms - Lots of room to spread out, not all of the rooms updated there, and be prepared to put modesty behind you in the older rooms as no doors on the bathroom and I suggest you keep chain on door as housekeeping can walk right in and see you standing in the shower. Not all of rooms have hammocks but all seem to have a little outdoor drying area for wet suits. Not all have robes and umbrellas either as we had neither. Our air Con worked well but we did come back from pool one day to find a drip and a puddle on the floor that maintenance mopped up with a paper towel and said wait 10 minutes and it would stop, and it did. Found the bed a little hard but I used the extra blanket found in the closet under the sheets to give a little extra Cush. Pillow menu on night table which I thought I would try so I called and ordered a down filled, but it never showed up. Had room service twice and although the food was questionable it was quick to arrive. No problem with hot water in our room but it sounds like it's hit or miss with this.
Service- Either really great or really bad, great not many people look good in grey. Kudo's to Moses one of the servers up front (has ambition to be a representative and deserves it)Beautiful Helen (a hostess at several locations, smile more you are so beautiful) and Edward a bartender in training down at the infinite pool who always remembered what we drank.
Beach and pools - spent all of our time at the infinite pool as it was quiet that we liked, other pool looked nice but busier. Yes you have to save beds early if you want a special location, seems to be the norm at most resorts now. Beach was private and there were always hard working people out there at first light cleaning up the washed up seaweed. Didn't do a lot of beach walking as we usually do as it was pretty unihabitated.
Gym and misc. - Was supposed to open at 7 but if you went then you would not get one of the 2 treadmills, we found if you went at 6 ( I know we're a little crazy) they usually would unlock it early, most days by 615. Very old equipment so be prepared to improvise if you're used to a certain routine. Also very warm so would suggest to go early if you can. If you prefer to jog outside drainage is really bad outside on the royal side and because it rains almost every day (the complimentary 5 minutes) can be quite slippery. Not as bad for jogging on the other side though.
Avoid the time share people at the front that want a piece of your time as well. Not worth the free bag, hats and Tshirts you may get.
It's so funny being Canadian I feel guilty saying negative things but I work in the service industry as well and work hard for my $$$ and expect my dollars worth. We met some wonderful people,Hi to Scott and Cathy from Saskatchewan ,Carolyn and Steve and the pretty little girl from Owen Sound and her bunch etc etc that we never got to say goodbye to, and all the other fellow vacationers. Thank goodness for the sunshine because by about 2pm everyday you forget the negative and by about 11 am it's 5 o'clock somewhere. By the way Good Ceasars, and sorry about the 3 stars but we couldn't justify any more .
