“Another great Christmas”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2014

My wife and I returned for the 2nd time from December 16th-27th and had another super vacation. Last year it was just 7 days and it was amazing to find how many of the staff remembered and welcomed us back. I think that this is one of the strong points about this resort. It is a very good resort but do not expect a grand entrance with an over the top reception. Everything is a little understated but this does not detract in any way from the wonderful relaxed ambience of the resort. The grounds are beautiful and so well maintained. Our superior junior suite was really good and the king sized bed very comfortable. WI fi was easily accessed in our room too. We did have a problem with our AC but Adrian, the resident manager, could not have been more concerned for our comfort and we did, in fact, change rooms. He was so kind and helpful. Two minor maintenance problems were also addressed by the staff promptly.
We had breakfast at Thalassa every day and also had dinner there most evenings. The dinner menu always had daily specials plus a very varied menu. The quality of the food was always excellent. We always had lunch at Sea Blue, adjacent to the beach and infinity pool, and had dinner there twice. At night everything is charcoal grilled and we had the most delicious surf and turf one night and lemon chicken the other. Again, great food with lots of variety. Something that was different this year was a beach barbecue on the beach for both lunch and dinner once a week. The beach area is beautiful with lots of natural shade and palapas. There is waiter service there and also around both pools. The staff are uniformly wonderful and our big thanks go to Carlos(pool bar) Ernesto, Carlos, Marisol & Julia(Thalassa), Franklin, Jeison, Joel,Blanca & Jorge(Sea Blue). So, ignore the grumblers and go and enjoy.
We hope to return again this coming December.
This is unrelated to the resort but we used Dominican Airport Transfers to and from Punta Cana airport and they were very reliable

Room Tip: We like building 44 overlooking the pool and close to the lobby and Thalassa restaurant

Stayed at the high season rates. Beaches are beautiful, but short. Once you walk a few hundred feet, you see a sign that says you are leaving the resort, and there are guards at the posts. Just past the signs are 'merchants' who try to sell you their wares. It greatly resembles third world country atmosphere. The resort, I found was very noisy. We were on the side that faced the through way in the resort, used by the workers. All hours of the day or night they walked, talking very loudly or drove small vehicles. Our room was very moist. The cushions in the room were mildewed as was the mattress. The food was just ok...no better or worse than any other all inclusive I have stayed in, in any country. The drinks were all Ron Barcelo brand alcohol...not near top shelf...perhaps bottom shelf. Most of the staff can speak some English, but most can't get past how are you? I would not stay here again. The weather was wonderful, but for the money, this would not be my choice next time.

Dec 2013 Stay:
Half the rooms face the back road with lots of hotel related traffic with trucks and carts used by staff. We requested a room change from Front desk, but they were quick to turn us down stating that all rooms were booked, then stated that they had similar rooms on the "good" side of the hotel, but we needed to pay $80/night to purchase the honeymooner package, which didn't include more that a massage and a "gift". We declined.
The issue here is that they didn't really care much or even tried to resolve the issue.
We had to use earplugs every night, had a total lack of privacy due to a 3 story hotel across the street, and the lack of sunlight made the room extremely humid.
The room itself really wasn't bad, as we paid for the Deluxe type, but the location was terrible. Unfortunately, 50% of the hotel rooms were on that side. Maybe a higher floor wouldn't be as bad.

Food and drinks quality were below average, and they didn't even offer liquor dispensers inside the rooms.

The worst part about this resort is the below average service quality. I'm comparing it to several other all inclusives I stayed in over the last several years both in DR and Cancun. Employees here lacked focus, and it took multiple attempts to get the order right on several occasions.

The hotel basically shuts down at midnight, so you would have to walk 10 minutes to the sister hotel next door for any type of activity past midnight.

Stayed at the RIU Palace a few miles away last year and it was substantially better across the board.

I wouldn't recommend this hotel at all, and I Truly feel that there are much much better options in DR and elsewhere.

Also, I booked through Expedia and it seemed that the hotel staff weren't willing to do much to help because of the type of reservation. That leads me to believe that they margins are lower and they weren't interested in helping. Expedia should probably look into this, as I'm now reluctant to book through them going forward.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the pools, not the opposite side. Also, higher floors are a must.

My wife and I are back from our 5 time in less then 3 years. Needless to say we love this resort and the staff. This trip we stayed in the private villa with the pool for the entire 10 days, if the upgrade is within your budget I strongly suggest it. If not we have stayed in all room levels and have been happy in all. No matter what room level your in you have access to the entire resort, Unlike some resorts that force you to upgrade to get all the benefits the resort offers.

I can't speak for everyone but our time here as been completely wonderful from the food, the service and the entire resort. We have never been disappointed. We will be going back in 2014.

We stayed here in April 2013 and we are planning to go back in 2014 as we had such a great time and met some great people, highlight was definitely going to the hard rock hotel one night to see daddy Yankee! Staff were great, the food was great and being from the royal side everything is much nicer when you go over to the family side I.e you get the best seats in the family buffet restaurant etc.

We love punta cana and this hotel was no disappointment!!

Room Tip: Get up early to get the best pool loungers :)

My husband and I have travelled to Punta Cana for many years. We visited the Catalonia Royal Bavaro for the first time from December 6 to 20, 2013. Previously, we’ve stayed at the Royal Suites Turquesa with its fantastic swim up rooms, Secrets Royal Beach, Punta Cana Princess, and the Grand Palladium Palace. Our Catalonia holiday was pleasant, the weather glorious, and we loved our 2-story spacious “Exclusive Infinity Swimming Pool Suite” 3404 (particularly after the former occupant’s pungent cigar odour dissipated from the room with the help of Febrese and one of the hotel’s dehumidifiers). We could see the ocean from our own suite’s pool, pool deck, and while sunning or swimming in the larger main infinity pool. Housekeeping was outstanding which we greatly appreciated.

As other reviewers mentioned, there was a limited supply of hot water especially during our first week. Then we had hot showers for several days before the water returned to luke warm temperatures. We also discovered something strange about the curtains in our suite because they mysteriously opened and closed by themselves. Initially, this was quite frightening because it happened in the middle of the night. Then we realized after experimenting with the controls, that whenever we opened or closed our curtains, the curtains in the suites beside us also opened and closed and vice versa, when the suites beside us opened and closed their curtains, our curtains opened and closed. One day after meeting a fun couple next door, we played around with the curtain controls for a joke. Afterward, we all enjoyed a great laugh together.

Chairs and palapas were always available on the beach throughout the day and while there, we sipped freshly made juice drinks from the Maloo juice bar. As well, for anyone in a wheel chair, there were accommodations leading to and along the beach for wheel chair access which we had never seen before at other resorts. We knew prior to our arrival that the beach would not be the most ideal for swimming or walking, but we did both anyway. The ocean was quite weedy as was the beach despite daily efforts to keep it to a minimum by raking or the occasional use of a gasoline powered machine manned by one diver to actually cut the seaweed. Most worrisome to us though, was the fact that you really had to watch for bits of broken glass when walking beyond the resort boundaries.

The Sea Blue a la carte outdoor restaurant located oceanfront served lunch and dinner. We usually ate lunch at Sea Blue, but sometimes went to the beach buffet, or grabbed a slice of pizza from the grill by the family pool. The lobster and veal dinners at Sea Blue were our favourite main dishes. Sometimes these mains were cooked to perfection. We also frequented the Cata Tapa restaurant because of its varied menu. The Thalassa and La Toscana restaurants were our other options for dinner. Overall, the food was tasty, but we missed having a larger variety of salads, vegetables, and cheeses from which to choose. Reservations were never required for any of the a la cart restaurants and of note, all provided vegetarian meals.

We met many helpful and friendly staff, most of whom spoke English, more so than at any previous hotels. Shortly after our arrival, Moises greeted us with his warm smile and a welcome drink (at my husband’s request as this hotel does not normally provide Welcome Cocktails to its new guests in the lobby; however, we learned the management delivers a bottle of champagne on ice, rum, vodka, and a fruit basket to your suite). For the remainder of our stay, Moises was always there for us, highly professional, attentive, accommodating, caring, thoughtful, and very genuine. We truly loved seeing him every day… he was a very special part of our holiday. Another employee who stood out for us was Andis, a bar tender at Sea Blue. He too was personable, respectful, and proficient. His mojitos were the best we’d ever tasted in Punta Cana!! He’d often personally deliver his “mucho bein” mojitos or a cervesa to our suite shortly after beginning his shift. My husband and I were most thankful to have met both Moises and Andis. As well, we enjoyed the hostesses and many servers and at all restaurants. We also appreciated listening to the extremely talented young pianist who played several nights in the Piano Bar. Thank you and Happy New Year!

This was our second visit to this resort (first visit was in 2011). Once again, we stayed in a suite with a private pool, close to the beach. I would like to say that this visit was as good as our previous visit, but unfortunately, one thing influenced the quality of our stay this time and that was the odour in our room. The sewer smell our of our a/c unit started the day after a heavy rain and did not go away for 2 days, co-incidently at the same time that we witnessed 'honey wagons' leaving the resort. We suspect there was some sort of gray water backup into the compressor unit of our a/c. To the credit of the front desk, they did offer to move us to another unit (which we declined because the odour eventually did go away) but it did require us to escalate the situation to the management supervisor. Nobody really seemed to understand the cause of the problem, how to fix it, or a desire to fix it. Along with several other issues which were reported to the front desk, this suggests a concerning problem with the management of the maintenance at the resort (i.e. everyone is just looking for a quick fix).

Other than that, the food at the resort was good, and the serving staff were fantastic. Wifi was sporatic but there were PCs available in the lobby for email which helped compensate for this.

The arrival/departure immigration process the Punta Cana airport is terribly overstressed and extremely frustrating to deal with at the end of a nice vacation.

In summary, we may visit Punta Cana again in the future, but all of the above will be deciding factors in our decision to do so.

Finally: a note to Dan/Elaine: sorry we did not get a chance to say goodbye to you. It was great to meet you and hope the rest of your trip was fantastic.

Room Tip: Suite with pool is absolutely the best way to go.
