My new wife and I booked this resort for our honeymoon a a great time! We booked the honeymoon package for the adults only and it was absolutely amazing! We went through an online travel agent so once we arrived at the resort we were promptly greeted at the door, then at check-in. After getting a quick explanation of the resort grounds we were given a map and our room information, and a quick drink welcoming us to the resort. We were shuttled to our room and our bags were taken to the room. It was amazing! There are 2 parts of the resort, an adult side which has NO CHILDREN :) - and a family side that is far enough away that you will NEVER hear another resort.
My recommendations:
-Explore both sides of the resort (adults only & family)- there are great activities that are not mentioned on the adult side; i.e. volleyball tournaments, shows, dance nights, great food, etc
-If you like hanging by the pool or the beach all day (my wife does) stay on the adult side
-There is a note on the restaurant "Mikado" about needing a reservation -that is false. Show up and enjoy their food! Hibachi and Sushi!
-DO NOT EVEN BRUSH YOUR TEETH WITH THE WATER!!!! - My wife and I both spent some R&R time in the room.
-If you do not physically see the water come from a bottle, do not drink it!
-Tipping is fairly common on the resort - NOT MANDATORY, the employees do work hard and a dollar here and there was enough
-The staff there are amazing, they sing and dance and enjoy their jobs. If you ever have a problem, it wont be a problem because they will fix it.
We met one great employee named Andy and spent a few hours talking and he made our drinks - all through the week we saw him always smiling as he did different tasks. He always noticed us and we would just stop and say, "Hey" and he would just smile and was shocked we remembered him. He always made sure we were taken care of, even if it was just to make sure we had dinner!
-The drinks were great, they have a wide variety for mixed drinks; although you can order shots of whatever hard liquor you want. The only beer on the resort is "Presidente" so be aware of that.
-The food at night was pretty good and we enjoyed the Sea Blue restaurant for lunch. We tried to avoid the "Buffet-Style" because we wanted to sit down and eat. All the sit down places were great.
My only negative - the bed is pretty hard.

We travelled from Newfoundland Canada & it was our first trip without our beautiful children so we didn't want to see any kids & that is why we chose an all adult resort. We also prefer smaller resorts with less that 400 rooms to the resorts that have over 1000 rooms. This resort was just what we needed. It was attached to the Catalonia Bavaro Casino & Golf resort which is a family friendly resort & although families stayed there, we didn't see many children at all. The family friendly side was much bigger than our side & had 4 restaurants & the buffet. It also housed a pool, bars, the night shows & the discos among many other aspects. Our adult only side had 3 restaurants, 2 pools & was very quiet.

When we arrived the service was great. The receptionist Charlot was very friendly and answered all our questions. We were then brought by golf cart to our room which was nice, even though it wasn't a long walk. We received a free bottle of rum. The room was quite spacious & immaculate. The fridge was stocked daily with water, pop & beer. The super large tub was a great treat as I love taking baths so I took full advantage of that & because you could see the TV from where you were bathing, that was a little treat as well. There were lots of towels & hot water. The balcony was great & so was the hammock, except we didn't get much use out of our hammock as there was a wee little lizard taking advantage of it. We named him Julio & decided to let him be as he wasn't hurting anyone.

The pools were great as was the beach. We didn't have to get up at 5am to get a spot in the shade as some reviews have stated. We got up & ready for the day, went to the pool or beach before breakfast & always found a spot...no question! The water was always so refreshing and warm & the bartenders always knew what I wanted without me having to say anything.

The restaurants were great. No complaints on taste or service. I do have to say that the Spanish Tapas Restaurant was "interesting", the tapas were not my cup of tea but I did enjoy the main course very much. Because we stayed at the Royal side, we had access to everything on the other resort, but they didn't have any access to our side. We also didn't have to make reservations to any of the restaurants like you typically do at other resorts & were usually seated in privileged areas in the dining rooms.

There is also a casino on site, which we didn't go into & a little shopping strip. More shopping can be found about a minute walk down the beach. We called it the "Walmart"...be warned as the shop owners can be a little aggressive. You may have to be firm but there's room to barter. The venders also came to the 2 resorts on different days so you don't have to leave the grounds at all if you chose.

All & all It was a great resort. I would certainly return to stay again & if bringing the kids would stay next door. If you want partying, dancing & the like, all you have to do is walk next door. If you want peace & quiet, you can stay on the adult side. Really you're getting the best of both worlds.

Room Tip: We stayed in villa 42 on the opposite side of the pool, so if you don't want to be close to the...

Royal Catalonia Bavaro was an excellent all inclusive holiday resort. I booked last minute through Thomson at a very affordable price, so affordable that I couldn't quite believe that it could be a proper 5 star resort, but it is!

The resort is attached to the Catalonia Bavaro Resort, a 2 minute walk across the complex. On this side there is Mexican, Italian, Japanese, American and buffet restaurant. The standard on this side of the resort is evidently much lower and after a couple of mediocre meals we decided to stick to the Royal side. Most of the evening entertainment is here, cheesy cabaret shows etc.

Good things about the Royal Catalonia Bavaro:

1.The food! On the Royal side the resort there is the main restaurant Thallassa, Ocean Blue beach side restaurant and a tapas restaurant. Only Royal guests can use the Royal side, however if you wish to go across to the other side as a Royal guest you can without booking. The Thallasa restaurant has an extensive lunch and dinner menu that even after 2 weeks I didn't get through all the dishes. The lunches are themed and evening is a standard menu with special dishes added. Our favourite was the Ocean Blue Beach side restaurant. The surroundings of palm trees and uplighting from the pool are fabulous. In the evening a barbecue is set up and all the dishes are cooked on this. Fish skewers, lobster, salmon, steak, bratwurst, pork loins, chicken along with grilled veg and potatoes, the standard here was excellent.
2.Surroundings. Idyllic! Palm tress, infinity pool, large water features, well kept greenery all around. Swim up bar.The beach is nice, a 30 minute walk along the coast you will find a perfect beach. It's worth snorkelling as the sea life rightonthe doorstop is amazing, even in the shallow waters. Comfy sunlongers and at the infinity pool they have the double bed type sun loungers for everyone to use. The gym is well equipped and there is a lovely spa area. Free wifi and computers in reception.
3.Rooms. Spacious, large bathtub in the bedroom and the showers was great. The 4 poster bed is enormous, biggest bed I have ever seen and very comfortable. The hammock on the balcony is a nice touch. A well stocked fridge with alcoholic and soft drinks all included and replenished daily. An electric safe big enough for a couple of laptops and everything else.. Iron and ironing board.
4.Drinks. All the named spirits included, the Presidente Local beer and the house wine is lovely. There are other wines to choose from with dinner at an extra charge. They are not shy with the measures. The cocktails are delicious, especially the Pina Colada con ron! Often bar staff attend around the pool offering to bring you a drink. The espresso coffee is delicious.
5.Service. Overall the service was excellent, usually with a smile, very efficient and personal. The waiter Moises in the Thallassa restaurant was excellent. My boyfriend is allergic to gluten and dairy and most of the time we managed to make share his dishes were altered as not to poison him! Tipping is the norm on the resort, which we weren't prepared for, so try to take lots of small dollar notes for this, anything from $1-10 US after each meal is normal and tipping at the bar as you wish. The room was cleaned and turned down twice daily with fresh flowers scattered around.
Adult Only. This gives the Royal side of the resort a sense of calm compared to the other side. (We did find the American guests were especially efficient at volume projection, occasionally damaging an otherwise perfect poolside ambience, but this is a cultural difference that nothing can be done about). The people holidaying here are mostly couples, of all ages.

Things it could improve on
1. Hairdryers in the room and air conditioning are both a little inefficient. A European adapter can be used in the bathroom and is handy for hairdryers of your own. The room was just cool enough!
2.Trousers in the restaurant! Men have to wear full length trousers in the restaurants in the evening time and closed toe shoes. there are no dress codes for women. In the climate this a little unfair on the blokes I feel, and most people we spoke to were unaware of this and had only brought one pair of jeans!
3.Service at the water sports centre- these were the rudest and most unhelpful staff members.
4.Quite confined to the resort- although this is the nature of this type of holiday. There are lots of organised trips but they are not cheap, usually $100 a day each. I can recommend Zip lining and the night club "Mangu" in Punta Cana. In order to go and explore most things are about a $20 taxi away.
5.Unable to hire bikes to take off the resort. There is a bike hiring facility, but you can only ride around the resort, which is disappointing as it would be a good way to explore.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this resort to a friend. For value for money this resort cannot be faulted.

Length of Stay: April 23-30, 2013
We are 24 years old and from Atlanta, Georgia and Greensboro, North Carolina. This was our first visit to the Caribbean and first all-inclusive resort. We both speak some Spanish, like the kind you learn in high school. I tell you this so you will know where we are coming from with this review.

Room: We arrived at 2:30pm (Check-in is at 3:00pm) and our room was not ready. The staff directed us to the restaurant off of the lobby to eat lunch. Then we went for a walk on the beach and the room was ready when we got back at around 3:30. I had requested top floor (there are 3 floors), close to the beach, and a king bed. I got a bottom floor room across from the spa, which is located away from the beach, and a king bed. We were assigned room 4208. The room was very clean and beautiful, just like the picture. Our room type was a Superior Junior Suite. The bathtub was wonderful and big enough for two. We had two lamp light bulbs out when we arrived and there are no overhead lights in the bedroom, so I placed a work order and the staff replaced the bulbs by the end of the day. Our room was cleaned everyday while we were gone to the beach and beautiful flowers were placed around the room. The turn-down service was wonderful and we especially loved the chocolates that were left bedside. We used room service for breakfast and a few late night desserts. All food arrived in no more than 30 minutes and was very yummy. The hammock on the balcony outside our room was not very comfortable. It hung way too low for anyone to sit in. The open layout of the room was great. There was ample space to layout your luggage, hang up your clothes and spread out toiletries in the bathroom.

Food/Beverage: Our favorite meal was dinner at Sea Blue, the restaurant by the beach. We had a Caesar Salad, Ham and Cheese Quesadilla, Surf and Turf, and the Grilled Lobster. You have to pay extra for lobster at all other restaurants on the property, but at Sea Blue it is included. The menus are available in about 6 different languages. The English translations of the menus were hit and miss. For example, at Thalassa Restaurant, I ordered a “Lobster Biscuit” according to the menu; it turned out to be “Lobster Bisque.” The fruit is amazing! I ordered it with every meal; we especially enjoyed the mango, pineapple, and banana. Our food rating for the Catalonia Royal Bavaro is 4 stars. The Catalonia Bavaro food rating is 2 stars, it was not dependable. All the restaurants carried Pepsi products and all drinks, including alcohol, were included. The Catalonia Royal Bavaro had a special wine list that was available at an additional charge, but we don't drink wine so we cannot attest to the caliber of the wine selection. Food presentation was 5 star!

Beach: The beach has very soft white sand with tiny pink coral pieces and a cool breeze carried by the palm trees. We got up every morning at 6am to reserve our beach chairs under the palm umbrellas. We used towel clips and the beach towels provided by the resort to reserve our chairs, but others used just towels. There was some sea grass on the beach, but the staff worked all day to remove as much as they could and they did a very good job. There is a waiter that comes and takes drink orders on the beach and we really enjoyed his service. The beach was very quiet, which we really enjoyed. There are people trying to sell excursions, seashells, and coconuts, but we did not purchase any. It was a normal occurrence to see women sun bathing topless. However strange this may seem to our American eyes, it was not distracting or inappropriate in that setting. There were bathrooms conveniently located close to the beach that were kept very clean.

Service/Staff: Most staff members speak sufficient English. Although, there was one time I ordered French fries and received French bread. I thought it was funny and the bread was great. Ricardo at the Gran Caribe (on the Catalonia Bavaro side) spoke very fluent English and we were able to ask him any questions we had. I suggest bringing $100 in tipping money. Remember to bring mostly ones and maybe a few fives. The servers on the resort do not haggle you for tips, but anywhere off the island people will stand in front of you and wait until you tip them. Some of the employees on the excursion will tell you how important your tip is to them in order for their families to survive, so be ready for it.

Internet: Spotty at best. From the hours are 11pm-7am the internet speed is very quick and at all other hours of the day, you can forget it. But you are on vacation, so maybe you don’t really need it. If you are planning on doing any time sensitive business while on vacation the internet is not reliable, so make other arrangements or leave the work at home.

Atmosphere: The Royal Catalonia Bavaro was very romantic and beautifully decorated. The design was very modern and sleek. The whole resort was extremely clean and well kept. They turn on the beautiful fountains at night and play soothing music all day long. We enjoyed the piano bar on Sunday night, the pianist was very talented. We did not meet many other American guests while we were there. We heard pretty much every language that we could think of, which we thought was pretty cool.

Culture: Although there is no time difference in the DR and Georgia, please keep in mind that 15 American minutes equal 45 Dominican minutes. The people in the Dominican have a much slower pace to their movements, so keep that in mind when ordering food or drinks, and be patient.

Excursions: We planned 2 excursions for this trip. The first excursion was the Saona Island Catamaran (IslandSun Experience). We booked this and paid for it thought our travel agent at Funjet.com (Mark, he’s great). We took a catamaran out to the island and spent 3 hours there. Then we rode a speed boat back and stopped at a natural pool and saw big orange starfish. The second excursion we took was the Paddle Surf Eco Tour (Kite Club Punta Cana). We paddle boarded along the coast and then went swimming in the most beautiful lagoons. This was our favorite excursion.

Overall, it was worth it to stay on the adult-only side; better food, service and atmosphere!

This turned out to be a 2 hotel vacation, with one 'side' linked to the other. The Catalonia part is adults only so it was very quiet. In fact, too quiet. Nothing to do...at all. No entertainment, no sports activities, no games...rather boring. Being one of the first hotels from the airport, the beach was not up to Punta Cana standards and was very weedy and short to walk. The food was ok, but mostly cold. Too many people getting up at 5 am to put towels on chairs both at pool and the beach. You have to get up early if you want a chair. The weather was great. Nice breeze and in the 80's every day. My advise is to head inland and stay at another part of Punta Cana, at least you can walk on the beach

Room Tip: Stayed in one of the last buildings, no noise problems but we did lose hydro a few times

We arrived home yesterday from the resort last night. The resort and staff were wonderfull. I wouldnt listen much about the complainers. I am sure they complain about everything. The postive.....great room...great food....great beach....and a wonderfull staff that makes it all worth while. Upon arriving we received a personal welcome letter along with a T Shirt because we were a Facebook fan. We were taken to our room - it was clean...spacious with a great view of the pool.....robes...slippers lots of towels and lots of hot water ( which is mentioned in other reviews - there was no hot water). We have a free safe and wirelss internet. After a couple of hours checking out the resort - (both sides - which is a huge bonus - the best of both worlds) when we got back to our room we had a welcome bowl of fruit and a bottle of rum.....very nice touch. .....I am not much for writing huge reviews but if you want something quiet....relaxed with a good atmosphere...good food - then you will enjoy this resort. Thumbs up....we will go back....I will say many thanks to all the staff - including that crazy bartender in the Piano Bar - that made me feel not so well the next day....lol. We will see you all again.

This was a nice resort but I have been to better. When we arrived there were no face towels and refreshing drinks. You were basically on your own figuring things out. Staff was not helpful at all.
Room was very musty smelling. As for being siuated next to the beach NOT ! I went up front and asked about it and was told thats it. No upgrades or other rooms available. There was a road behind our room and trucks go back and forth all the time. The balcony had a broken towel rack, no hammock. But all you could see is the road anyway. There were no bathrobe and slippers. The mini bar was hardly ever restocked. The snacks consist of 2 pkgs of peanuts and oreos. They have an ice bucket but you have to go get ice. They never filled it. The food was average. We ate next door alot. Food was great and so was the entertainment. Pool chairs you had to get out there early. Or wait till afternoon to get chairs. We had massages on the beach, they were wonderful. I felt it was over priced. Probably wont go back.
