“Just Returned from Tortuga Bay (Mar 2012)”
Reviewed March 23, 2012

I had never been to the DR before and so did not know what to expect. My wife and I and our three children rented one of the oceanfront villas at TB. It is our new favourite destination in the Carribean. The whole experiene exceeded my expcatations - great accomodations, beautful beach, amazing golf courses. I was also very pleasantly surprised by the cuisine. Wonderful staff.

Not cheap but I woudl not think twice about going back.

Pros:
1. One of the most beautiful places I've ever been. The beach is truly breathtaking. Very white powdery sand. They regularly rake the beach to keep the seaweed from accumulating.

2. Great for families with young children. Also good for older folks looking for a slow, relaxing vacation.

3. The place is small and intimate. You'll know everyone here by the second day. Only 30 rooms.

4. Food and restaurants are OK, but not great. All of the restaurants at the hotel seem to have the same menu. My son thought his hamburger was inedible. I thought all of the Caribbean seafood items were excellent.

5. Spacious suites, big bathrooms, DVD players, movies at front desk to rent for $10 each. There's a kitchen in each suite. Coffee maker with excellent free Dominican coffee. Every suite has a spacious outdoor patio or balcony.

6. Really great supermarket at Punta Cana village.

7. You get a butler and a cell phone. Butlers are young, pretty, helpful and speak English. You can generally call your butler at any time.

8. Private airport. Hotel arranges a speedy whisking throgh the airport. Really wonderful perk.

9. Free bicycles and a golf cart for travel around resort.

10. Heated pool was wonderful. We were able to jump in without any need to slowly get used to the water.

11. My wife really liked the spa, and said she had a wonderful massage.

12. Golf course was wonderful. Some of the holes were on the ocean. Rental clubs were old and missing some clubs.

13. They have a very nice petting zoo, including goats, cows, chickens, turkeys, a donkey, a mule and a pony.

14. There is a horse stable on the property. My daughter was able to ride a horse on the beach.

Cons:
1. Don't come here if you're in your 20s or 30s. You'll be bored out of your mind. Very little to do or see, and very few other young people. Nobody in this place is single or good looking (except for my wife).

2. Nobody is ever around when you need them. It can take a lot of time to get cushions, chairs or towels at the beach. With only 30 rooms, they don't have enough staff to have full time service on the beach.

3. Internet never really worked in my room. I could generally get web sites, but the connection was never strong or consistent enough to connect to my office's VPN network.

4. No gift shop or store (except for a very expensive Oscar de la Renta store). On our first day, we had to go to another nearby hotel to buy sunscreen.

5. I really wanted to find a casual, fun, inexpensive bar/restaurant to eat at with my kids and maybe buy a T-shirt to bring home. That place does not exist at the resort or in Punta Cana village.

6. Punta Cana Village is a joke. It's really small, and has a few restaurants. There is virtually no shopping in Punta Cana.

7. Don't confuse Punta Cana with nearby Bavaro. Bavaro is a big own with 50 resorts, a long beach and a big nice shopping mall.

8. Everything nice in Punta Cana and Bavaro has a gated security check point.

9. Fitness center was very weak. Only one treadmill, one eliptical machine, two exercise bikes. A Universal set with two leg stations. No free weights except a handfull of very light dumbbells.

This is, without a doubt, THE BEST beach vacation spot ever. Our room was a two bedroom suite where the living room could set 12!!! The kitchen could use some improvement, as the refrigerator was only big enough for the drinks you could purchase from the hotel. They need a real refrigerator with more glassware and dish towels. But, the location was fantastic!! Right on the beach, but with a strip of grass between the beach and the house so you could get the sand off your feet before you entered. The food at the restaurants was good and we ate in town two night, but it was the end of a month long trip around South America so I think the food was better than I give them credit for as I had reached burn out.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for a weekend and the experience was breathtaking, the room had an oceanview, very big, in the balcony we had chaise lounge where we could sunbathe without going to beach or pool, also a dining set where we had breakfast, it was very impressive that the moment we checked in, we were handed a cell phone to have communication with the manager 24/7, the rooms were designed and decorated by renowed designer Oscar de la Renta, it has a nice bathroom with roman tub,the beach is private and is one of the best in the country, one of the days we had breakfast at the restaurant next to the pool with a waterfall, food was exquisite and attention was 5 stars too, personnel was exceptional too, definitely a top of the line hotel, great food if you decide to stay at hotel and many great options in the surrounding areas as well, is located in the punta cana beach resort, which you can also access and enjoy that hotel facilities too, very splendid too

Room Tip: request a second floor room to have an even better view from the ocean

I know you may be weighing the cost of Tortuga against other options in the Dominican and I can attest to the fact that it is worth every penny. From the minute you step off your flight at the airport to the moment when your stay is complete, Tortuga Bay delivers as promised. The private beach, the beautiful rooms, the wonderful team of people that work at the resort---heck---even the weather---it is all amazing. Our weeklong stay as a family (me, husband, 19-year old college daughter, her friend and 16 year old daughter) started with "Whisk Away" service plane-side which, during the busy Spring Break period meant no waiting in the 100s deep lines at immigration and customs. After a very brief drive (in an AC-d van with a super friendly driver who offered water and Cokes) to the reception area where we were greeted by the villa manager and on to our lovely rooms via golf cart, we were "checked in" while we were standing in our rooms (which looked out on white sands and beautiful Carribean blue water)---very smooth. The villa manager was available 24x7 via a cell phone and she could not have been more pleasant and accomodating---dinner reservations, drives to The Village or restaurants, extra beach towels, whatever. Housekeeping kept the villa immaculate, literally referring to it as 'her home" with great pride and welcome. Waiters, room service, and all others were warm and friendly, patiently allowing my husband to try out his Spanish and encouraging him to do so.

My ONLY watch-out: My husband likes to be able to go deep-sea fishing and to wander outside of resorts---he is pretty capable given extensive travel---but the team at Tortuga made it very difficult for him to do either, suggesting he would be better served by staying on property. I would guess this was for his safey but to him it felt confining. So, if you are looking for a vacation where you can wander far and wide, the 1000s of acres of beautiful Tortuga may feel the same to you.

Room Tip: All rooms have great views of the water---we preferred not being right on the beach but we still had...

My husband and I loved Tortuga Bay! Our accommodations were immaculate, the view was stunning, the weather perfect and most importantly the service was exceptional. The personal escort service through customs and around long lines was fabulous! The golf courses were both beautiful and challenging, the beach relaxing and clean, and the jungle hike with fresh water swimming lagoons were just some of the many great aspects of this resort. We will definately be back to Tortuga Bay!

Room Tip: Beachfront villas are definately the way to go!

My husband and I celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary by visiting Tortuga Bay with our children and grandchildren. Everyone had a wonderful time. The view was beautiful and the accommodations had a trendy, classy beach feel. The bathrooms were large with 2 sinks, shower and tub in all of them. We had a 3 bedroom villa which consisted of two beds and two baths down separated by the living area and one king bed and bath upstairs with it's own kitchenette and balcony--all on the water. The upstairs bedroom is accessible from outside stairs so it can be rented separately from the downstairs if need be. The whole villa had housekeeping services twice a day which was wonderful.
We found that everyone and I mean everyone was so friendly and accommodating to all of us. Our villa manager was wonderful and made life as simple as possible for us. There are beautiful golf courses, a spa which I did not go to (maybe next time), several restaurants, a beach and golf club and village that were all easily accessible.
My husbands favorite golf was Punta Espada at Cap Cana--he said it was about the best he's played or at least rivals any he has played. Cap Cana is a cab ride but don't worry there are 45 holes at 2 courses right there at Tortuga Bay. Corales is the best of those.
My daughter and her husband did the zip line and loved it and from the pictures was beautiful. We went to mantee park but was not so excited about that. The park was okay but only if you are just really looking for something to do. They have swimming with the dolphins but for the money it was not worth it.
There are some nice restaurants at the village--we ate at Mama Luisa's outside and Bistro inside. Both were very nice. Bistro did not have a high chair but hopefully will get one. Another restaurant that we liked off of the resort was AquaMare at Cap Cana. It had a great atmosphere and the food was great. Cap Cana was a little quiet at the time but we still enjoyed ourselves.
In summary, Tortuga Bay is a great place to relax, golf, swim in the ocean or in 1 of 3 pools, bike ride, take in a few excursions and have fine dining or casual dining all in a wonderful atmosphere.
