“Great Vacation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 15, 2014

I just came back 2 days ago from Riu Palace Punta Cana. Its good value all inclusive Hotel. The location is fantastic!! It was the first time in DR for my friends and we had a great time. There is a Disco and a Casino in the hotel and there is a convenient shuttle bus to the other Riu hotels.

Beach and pool: beautiful beach and the hotel staff keeps it very clean which is important to take care of the environment. The pool has a bar and a convenient buffet restaurant around the pool, drinks are great and the mamajuana are awesome and good quality.

Restaurants: Food at the Yokohama Japanese restaurant is terrible, very salty and not appetizing. The Brazilian restaurants is ok I would not recommend. On the other hand, the Italian restaurant offered the best presentation and taste. The buffet “Don Manuel" offered some of the national dishes as well as a selection of all American breakfast, lunch and dinner. Some of the dishes were good other bland with no taste. They offered a selection of fresh fruit juices, and other healthy choices. Drinks are good and a big selection.

Rooms: We had 2 Jr. Suits. The doors need to be updated, they need safer lucks, and there is a safe in the room. The rooms are spacious. We had problems with our bathroom, our toilet was clog and the bathtub was leaking water to the outside. We informed the staff about it, they fixed it and it only worked for one day. The bedding is of bad quality, towels are good and the hotel staff d enough.

Staff:
The staff is very friendly, good customer service specially David from Expedia, Polanco from Don Manuel buffet and Eugenia our housekeeper.
Hopefully, the Hotel will take into consideration updating the door locks, cleaning the glasses in the room and making sure showers and toilets are working properly.

This is a great all inclusive hotel. You don't need to leave the hotel, there are a few other Riu hotels next to the Riu Palace and you can go in a shuttle which is provided by the hotel back and forth to the casino, to the night club, the shops and much more. You really don't need to leave the hotel for anything unless you do an excursion. Excellent service, great food okay entertainment. The entertainment would be the only thing that would need to be worked on but other than that beautiful hotel.

The hotel location was fantastic. The views were exceptional. That's where it ended. The beds were extremely uncomfortable. They were hard and very thin coverings. There was no frills or fluff. The rooms (we had 2 jr. suites) were very musty. All clothes had to be washed or dry cleaned upon return to US. The food was average. This coming from a non-foodie. Husband was very disappointed. Be ready for buffets and recycled food. Ate lots of fruit and salad to combat the same food fatigue. Be aware that if you are planning on wifi access 24/7 you do not want to stay here. Unfortunately, hubby had to stay in contact with work on a minimal basis and had difficulties. We had access about 4 hrs a day at odd times. Went to Noah and Jellyfish on multiple evenings to avoid the buffet/hotel restaurants. They were both awesome! Spa was a bright spot in the hotel!

Room Tip: Ask for pool/beach views

This was our second time there and it was so different than the first. The resort itself is nice and the staff very friendly but the food is the same almost everyday and you get tired of it very fast. We found it better to stick with the buffet because of the poor quality in the a la carts. The rooms have not been upgraded since the last time and one morning we woke up to water all over the floor because the ac had been leaking all night. As we all know the evening shows are not Vegas quality but these were the worst I have seen and most of the beach and pool activities were of the same caliber. We did stay for two weeks and I think one week should have been our choice. For the money this was not a good value.

I just got back from RIU Palace Punta Cana yesterday and I can honestly say it was the best all-inclusive I have ever stayed. The staff was friendly & helpful, the resort grounds clean & beautifully kept up, my room was simple was tasteful & very clean! As far as the food and drinks go, everyone can find what they want & need and was plentiful - beautifully presented.
I am a single American woman that travelled and spent 5 days there to regroup and relax...it was the perfect antidote for a Bostonian coming from freezing temperatures...thus my description as "Paradise". People's review of this resort was so critical that I was almost tempted to cancel my reservation...well I will let you in on a big secret: Europeans are flocking there and we Americans should be taking advantage of this resort for the affordable cost and what you get for your money. A 4 star resort but I rate it a 5 in excellence. The beach is amazing, the pools splendid, the grounds beautiful and well-kept, and the staff friendly and helpful.
Another gem I found on my last day is the indoor pool, sauna, and steam room in the gym/spa building next to the outdoor pools. There is no additional cost to use these and they are separated for male & female use with lovely lounge chairs to relax in while feeling the cool ocean breeze coming through the open windows facing the beach & ocean.
I am anxious to go back with my family and make use of it and the 3 other connecting RIU resorts that we are able to have use of!

Just came back from the Riu Palace Punta Cana. We enjoyed our stay there very much. Overall the hotel has a lot to offer, however I would not consider it a 5 star in all aspects, there are some issues with the rooms, and while the food is good, there could be a little more variety and the dining areas (especially a la carte) could be updated.

I do find people are being overly critical about their reviews of this older and traditional looking Riu Palace hotel. While it is not at the level or the newer Riu Palace Bavaro or renovated Riu Palace Macao, it was also going for $500 cheaper for a New Years Eve departure. And there are so many positive aspects. The look of the hotel has some grand character. The setting and layout of the hotel is very striking. It is a large resort but very easy to navigate and get around.

Entertainment:
There is a lovely courtyard leading up to a beautiful plaza which is a nice and relaxing place for an evening drink while live music is playing. I did notice that people dressed up a bit to go to the plaza and dinner in the evening. There are many European guests at the hotel. Casual dress is fine, but on the nicer side fits in better. The lobby bar is visually striking with a very good drink selection and great staff. It closes by midnight, but there is a 24 hr sports bar (ambience isnt great) but can be fun depending on the company. The couple of shows I watched during evening entertainment were really mediocre but the show theatre is a very nice one. There are some various games/activites throughout the day with the entertainment staff but this is not a party atmosphere as much as some resorts.. however the pool area can be very fun in the afternoon.
The only disco in the area is Pacha and it is a 15 minute walk from the hotel. It is ok to check out, but not spectacular, a smaller club with crowds that vary.

Beach and Pool:
The beach is beautiful, water is very nice (can be windy) usually there was a yellow flag for swimming. The sand was wonderful, you can go for long walks on the beach. The area is a bit crowded but you can find a chair. The same with the pool area at the hotel. Drink service is good at both (especially the pool)

Food, Drink and Restaurants:
Overall I enjoyed the food here. I would not call it 5 star, but decent selection. The presentation was nice. I always enjoyed the seafood salad's they featured. Fruit is plentiful, but mostly it is passion fruit, cantaloupe and pineapple- some great options but you will not find a huge variety. As for the a la carte's we enjoyed the steak house. Nice quality beef tenderloin.
I also liked the stewed beef at the buffet, very tender and good with rice. Fries and cheese sauce at lunch was a staple for us as well. We did not take advantage of 24 hr room service, but it is available.
The lobby bar or pool area is a nice spot for a coffee break. Cappuccino's were very good.
Drinks are plentiful, lots of variety for cocktails. If you want premium liquor brand, mention it when ordering. I really enjoyed the mimosa's at breakfast also.

Rooms:
The rooms need upgrading. The one's overlooking the courtyard and on the higher floor near the beach are preferable. The rooms are quite musty, the air conditioning needs to be updated. The look of the room is a little dark, and the beds are quite hard, not that comfortable. Bedding is not quality either. However rooms are fairly spacious, there are double sinks in bathrooms, good towels, and good shower water pressure. The safe required an old fashioned key, as do the doors. In room liquor dispensers are a nice touch, and there is water, pop and beer restocked regularly.

If people overlook a few issues with the resort, it really is a solid choice. Has a lot going for it. If you can get a great deal, even better as Punta Cana is a great choice for a winter getaway destination. Hopefully they will look into some upgrades without changing the character of the hotel, one of it's best features.. along with the friendly and efficient staff here.

Room Tip: Choose a higher floor overlooking courtyard

Reservation system is a scam. Do not expect to have the room u booked online upon arrival. We booked a jacuzzi suite ocean view and when we got there they were sold out and they offered us a jr suite. Funny thing is they already had the paperwork prepared knowing this but the when we checked in they searched the computer and acted surprised. SCAM.. they booked us in the room online but never had it available just to get us to the hotel to sell us another room. The food is pretty bad. Probably a B at the most. The hotel staff allowed a 5 year old baby to swim completely naked in the pool using it as a toilet at times. Disgusting. .. please read all reviews and take a survival kit with u for this hotel. Yes the doors slam which cause lack of sleep bring sleep aid. Yes the rooms really stink bring febreze. Yes there are bugs bring bug spray. Yes the food is bad just count on it bring snacks to supplement. Yes the staff is subpar. Yes u have to tip to get service around the pool and at bars bring a stack of 1s. Yes the pool is in disrepair I cut my foot on missing tiles bring bandaids. Yes the towel reservation system sucks bring extra beach towels from home. Yes the fact that people reserve chairs by the pool 24-7 with their beach towels sucks. You never can get a decent chair by the pool. But other than that its a beautiful hotel. Landscaping is beautifully maintained.
