checked in today with my wife.instead of a king bed we received two twins pushed together.moved to another room came back after dinner and had a cockroach on the minibar. On our thurd room they gave us an oceanview for our troubles...whoopie(sarcasm). Only reason this doesnt get a one is the grounds are well kept and one of the helpers got me some presidente cervesa for the room. 3rd time at a riu resort and dissappointed so far, hopefully i can update later with better reviews.

My family and I stayed at the Riu Palace Hotel in Punta Cana and the experience was very dissapointing.
1. There is not Smoking policy. People smoke everywhere in the hotel, close and open areas, This is not healthy for anybody, you hardly can breath.
2. no lifeguard neither in the pool nor in the beach ( it was the only hotel in the area lacking this important safety measurement)
3. No ATM machines within the hotel premises and the only one availble within the resorts complex was 4 miles awy and it was out of service!!
4. Staff at the hotel was very rude. Definitly not service oriented.
5. No variety in the menus of the resort buffet hotels. The only choice to eat something different was via restaurants (hard to get a reservation)
6. Poor house keeping (especilly bathrooms)

The hotel looks very nice on the outside and it seems like it has been recently refurbished, but the local humidity is taking its toll. My air conditioner smelled a little funky, to be honest. It might be just a question of exchanging an air-filter but it’s not really the guest’s job, is it?
The rooms were a little humid as well.
The staff expects to be tipped and then offers great service, which is annoying after a while.
The beach towels looked a little old.
I liked the food and entertainment but it was a little annoying that anyone can enter the hotel, which translates into low security level.

Thompson delayed flight and worse flight ever staff so rude,  check in swift and informative. Room corner room was lovely and bright with garden view, slight musty smell on arrival but after a few minutes this disappeared and this is a carrabian country with humid weather so can't be helped. Bathroom fine, no mold although mixer tap was temperamental.

Food was fine nothing extravagant but good selection and varied. Does become tedious after two weeks and certain items can be very well done however nothing is un-edible! They didn't serve bacon one day a breakfast which was infuriating ,how about you take the donuts away from the Americans!! The Italian was by far the best ... Steakhouse you can give a miss!

I found the staff on the whole where amazing a few $ here and there and a appreciation of Spanish ( hola, muy bien etc) is fine they all speak english but I think this is dependant on your attitude we had some great service.

Drinks are plentiful however ask for what you want or you will get cheap and if you don't like send back. If you was Jack Danials say it as they have it. Claudia in lobby bar was amazing!!

The pool after the weekend was murky but this was soon resolved. The hotel gets very busy at weekend and we found the influx of people certain things went missing like fags from bars however this was not an issue any other time

Entertainment - americans is all I can say not my cup of tea but funny at certain times.

We had an amazing time, met a great bunch of people and whatever minor issues there may have been where overshadowed by the fun and frolics that we had.

I think some people on here are harsh and forget that it's a holiday and spend their entire time picking fault rather than enjoying themselves!

I will go back as I had FUN!!!

Room Tip: Not ground floor as you will get bugs.

Sorry to hear others might have experienced problems - we had none. Walking into the courtyards, we were impressed with the meticulously maintained grounds. The pool was inviting with a full menu of daily activities for those that wanted to participate. We joined the fun most days, including morning yoga, bocci ball, bingo, and water exercise (lead by a costume-clad drag-queen in heels... a hoot!). Pool-side parties included tropical drinks served in coconuts and pineapples. Music was great and not overwhelming. The beach, itself, is clean and pristine. Never a problem finding a chair in the sun or shade, near the pool or on the beach. And we found the food to be very tasty and beautifully displayed. In my opinion a couple of "stars" better than the Riu Palace Las Americas in Cancun. Try "Luigi's" (Italian Restaurant) and "Krystal" (a more-upscale dining experience). We had no problem booking same-day reservations for either restaurant. (Booked around 10AM for 6:30 dining that evening.) On the other nights we enjoyed the bountiful buffet. Depending on the night, we enjoyed bacon-wrapped scallops, shrimp, extremely fresh fish, carved beef and pork, local dishes, and a plentiful array of fresh fruit. We recommend trying the buffet (at least once) right when they open. You'll hear the staff clapping just before the open the doors and when you walk in you'll be amazed at how clean and beautifully displayed. BTW, their deserts were abundant and fabulous. A boatload of fresh fruits, cheeses, mousse, pastries and cakes! Our room was a bit musty the first day but the air conditioner and ceiling fan quickly took the humidity out of the room. It was located on the ground floor facing the courtyard. A "typical" Riu room with that old, familiar layout. No problem with bugs or loud music. We often watched the sunrise from our balcony while enjoying a cup of coffee and enjoyed the late evening breeze with a drink in our hand. The alarm clock was pain in the butt - but it was probably us... we couldn't get the "alarm setting" to disarm. It went off once a night. INSIDE THE GIFTSHOP might be a better place to buy some local trinkets, coffee, mamajuana booze or "kits", price-wise. Often times better priced than trying to bargain with the vendors in the market - WITHOUT haggling. Really. Their sticker prices were pretty darn good. Tried to use my "RIU" card in the giftshop, but the only thing available was a Riu beachbag (20% discount, I think). Did a tour with Seavis. We chose the two island excursion with snorkeling, beach, lunch. It was topped off with a "floating bar" happy hour, as we floated around in the waters of the Caribbean! We held starfish and sea cucumbers, even had an friendly encounter with a boa constrictor and we were lucky to see the frigat birds during mating season. All day trip that was worth the price (about $120 ea, including the hotel transfers to Bayahibe, which is about 30 minutes away). The experience of getting off the resort and enjoying the DR and its people was priceless. Found the excursion by doing an online search. If possible, talk with Ingrid (FABULOUS) and she'll make sure it's a great experience. In our case, she knew it was my sister's birthday and she made sure we were treated like a couple of princess on a royal excursion. Our tourguide was Carlos - awesome!

I must say I enjoyed my stay at the Riu Palace. The hotel is beautiful and very grand, however we did have a few issues, our shower didnt work, there was a musky smell in our room, our toilet seat was broken, our toilet flooded twice, and our bed cover smelt of sick, one day our room wasn't cleaned, we found quite a few bugs in our room (which i know can be common in the carribean) Although I must say as soon as we reported the issues they were dealt with. I would say the majority of the Al a care restaurants, are there to tick a box, the only 2 we really enjoyed were the italian (which are buffet starters) and the japanease which was really yummy. However the steak house food seemed microwaved to me, it was luke warm and there was no action at all in the kitchen which is visible as you come in. On the website it says unlimited branded and no branded alchohol, I tried the smirnoff on many occasions, and it tasted more like sambuca. All in all we did thoroughly enjoy our stay, however I wouldn't say this hotel is a 5 star, and I think there are certain aspects which need attention. The pool can get very dirty at times, and have alot of dead wasps etc in it and around the pool, could do with someone cleaning it a little more often. Staff in general are very friendly. Another thing to note, which wasn't mentioned to us before we travelled, is that there is building works to the back of the building, which if you are situated near (which i was) can be a bit of an eyesore and a distruption. Overall I really enjoyed my holiday, although there were issues, I think the hotel could just do with a little TLC.
