“VIP Lounge at Punta Cana Airport”
Reviewed January 26, 2014

Leaving our hotel went so smoothly that we arrived at the Punta Cana Airport with a little more than the recommended 2 hours before our flight. A week before, on our arrival in the Dominican Republic, we had been intense, focussed on getting to a beach asap. We had handled our own luggage -- after all, we each had only one stupid wheeled bag -- no sweat -- well, maybe a little sweat, since it was at least 85 degrees in the open-air airport. Now, a week later as we departed, having attained a whole new level of laid-back-ness, we opted for the lazier method -- a porter -- no searching for signs or questioning everyone in an official-looking uniform -- just follow our guy. He was cute, disappointed (for us) that we weren't Sky Priority, and got us through the maze and into the correct snake-line for Delta check-in. The airport claims to be the second largest in the Caribbean, and it handles the mass of visitors with the wisdom of experience.

We were herded a bit like cattle through check-in, then up and down chutes to semi-mandatory exit photos with beautiful models in "native" costume [like a cruise or fraternity house dance] and then to mandatory security and finally passport stamping. It was very gentle and reasonably quick -- so quick that we neared our departure gate area with an hour to wait. One of the ramps in Departure Terminal 2 leads past a sign for the stairway to “VIP lounge.” “VIP” sounded good. “Lounge” sounded good. Ahead, down the ramp, I could see the massive boarding hall for gates 5-8. We took the stairs. At the top was a mezzanine overlooking the boarding hall.

The entire airport is open to the outside. When waiting in line for check-in, security, and passport control, we saw giant ceiling fans that kept the air moving, creating the illusion of cooling. [“Big A**” fans is now a brand in the U.S. or else I would call these Big A fans. They were, in any case, big fans.] Once through Passport control, the airport no longer felt obliged to fan the air. No more big fans.

The VIP Lounge was not cooled or fanned, but it had an uncrowded bathroom, a bar, “airline lounge” snacks, and a lot of empty seats. If hot air didn’t rise, it would have been perfect.

I got in with my Priority Pass. My wife used her Lounge Club card. It seemed like some airlines [not Delta] provide access for their passengers. Wi-Fi was free and worked well for my laptop and our iPhones. A Rum and Tonic was free. The word for “tonic” wasn’t in my Spanish vocabulary, but once I pronounced it “toe-neek,” a fresh bottle of Schweppes appeared. No problem. A Bloody Mary was $5. Mixed nuts were provided at the bar and discreetly replenished as soon as we took some. The bathroom was tidied up between my two visits.
