We have used AI hotels over many years and this was one of the best. Clean, frindly, great facilities etc.
The hotel was well maintained and very clean and tidy. Numerous bars to suit yor mood (Martini Mix was a personal fav), A number of themed restuarants (no booking necessary), good quality buffet, good entertainment, friendly staff. Good favcilities (Gym/Watersport etc included). stocked mini bar.
Only negative was the poor retail shops on site (poor stock at high prices)

A very good hotel, very friendly staff ( thank you Esmeralda from reception).
The entertainment team have a complex program with games, sports and shows which they won't bore you.
The room is very big and clean( I was not diamond club).
They have a very well stocked store, prices a bit high.
The food is delicious but I was expecting more seafood, snack bar near the beach, the coffee shop have a really good coffee.
They clean the beach so no seaweed.
I recommend this hotel especially for couples ( there are not many children).

Perfect for our first holiday together in 9 years - everything we hoped, just a shame we couldn’t stay longer!

We went in their off peak season so could always get a sun lounger yet still a great atmosphere. Made really special by our butler, Ozuna, who was so friendly and helpful!

It rained on our last day and overcast on another but brilliant weather the rest of the week. Even being overcast it was still so warm and perfect to cool off in the pool (who doesn’t love a swim up bar!).

Loved the variety of restaurants, on site coffee shop and martini bar! We didn’t go into the casino, on site theatre or nightclub so can’t comment on these.

First time in the DR! I organized a group of friends to travel to this resort via Sunwing in February of this year: 4 couples for a 50th birthday celebration.

PROS:
The resort lobby is lovely with a nicely appointed bar and overlooks the grounds all the way out to the ocean. This is where we were able to get some brand name liquors. The resort has done a beautiful job with water features and pools, creating a real feeling of rest, relaxation and luxury for this affordable price.

The room was large, with a fridge and beautiful spacious balcony with a place to dry our suits. It was generous with super comfortable beds, but the bathrooms were tight when passing and didn't offer much counter space. Located on the first floor, our balcony overlooked the delivery driveway so we had constant beeping from trucks backing up and staff conversations as they walked by. We had mentioned that my husband was celebrating a milestone birthday, so to be given this room, was disappointing.

The buffet was fabulous. Hands down the best food that we have experienced at an all-inclusive resort, and we are comparing this to a boutique hotel in Barbados. Choose whitefish and you can have it done 5 different ways or order it freshly grilled to your liking. The choices were extensive, the food was fresh and I never felt that I would get sick from anything I ate. As a foodie, I didn't wish that I had a kitchen in my room at this resort, which is uncommon. The selections varied each day with some of the standard items repeating several times a week. While the a la carte restos were good, we didn't find anything better than the buffet.

On our final evening, the valentines celebration included staff who were dressed elegantly, roses for the women and a train that ran through the desert section filled with beautiful chocolate surprises. The chocolate was FABULOUS!!

We loved the hotel. The size, amenities and aesthetics of the Royalton are beautiful. The beach was clean with tons of seating and great sand.

CONS:
While at the resort, we attended the Sunwing presentation and booked an excursion directly with the Sunwing rep at the resort, to ensure that we were purchasing something reputable and safe. This excursion was for Royalton guests only and guided by a Sunwing representative. We chose the catamaran tour to Saona Island with speed boat and 2 additional snorkeling destinations. The breakdown of the day excursion was explained in detail but was not what occurred during our trip.

Here's the problem...
Scaling the side of a speedboat to snorkel is problematic for anyone with mobility issues and can seem daunting to people who don't have boating experience, so a large portion of the group didn't leave the boat.
The speedboat was hard, fiberglass and in ill repair....this did not make for a comfortable ride across the waves and we felt it for days.
The snorkeling at stop #1 was VERY limited.
The stop at the beautiful bay was gorgeous, however again from the speedboat so the same issues were present and there was no snorkeling.
There were features on Saona island that we were not informed of (ie: massage from the locals) and we didn't have money to enjoy.
The Catamaran is basic. Drinks are limited to amber rum or beer. The ride back from the island takes about 2 hours and is under power, not just sail.
We tipped the speedboat driver, the bus driver, the tour guide, the catamaran staff...it went on and on. We felt like it was a money grab from the first step on the beach until the tourist trap they called a "chocolate store" of products made on the island. After tipping the catamaran crew they actually tried to stop us and ask for more money as we exited the boat to board the speedboat. It was frustrating, intimidating and spoke volumes about the quality of this excursion.
On the whole, it felt like we were in a tourist trap....and while we tried to ensure that our group tipped appropriately to keep us safe, we felt that all parties, from the sunwing rep to the boat crews, were in on a deal to get as much $$$ as possible.

This would have been the perfect holiday if not for a general feeling of unease. The beach vendors, excursion staff, vendors who set up at the resort on specific days and some of the secondary staff at the room locations, gave off a feeling of resentment or disrespect. Specifically when you say 'no' to a vendor, they become somewhat hostile.

We also spoke with a group of women traveling alone and they were very cautious about what information they disclosed. For example, why do the male room staff ask "when are you leaving"? We experienced this throughout our stay, and the group of women felt increasingly uncomfortable with the constant questioning. Probably just how it is in the DR, but for this reason we don't need to go back.

TIPS:

Wine selection is great....we found several of our favourites at this location! You can also order a glass of house wine at the restaurants although this is not advertised. Of course they want to upsell bottles of wine however they omit to tell you that you can order a glass of house that is included in the AI price. The house red is good.

Get a second floor room.

Do not drink the water. This includes brushing your teeth. Bottled water is provided.

Don't waste your money on the Sunwing Saona Island excursion.

Don't tell anyone when you are leaving.
