Our room was very nice and clean. The location was near enough to the restaurants, beach and pool. Most of the restaurants were good. We made a reservation in the Japanese restaurant but were never told about the cooking demonstrations in the separate rooms and so we could not participate. The French restaurant was also very good. The first night we went to the barbecue grille which was very good. Most restaurants also had a buffet and menu to order from. It is very important to make reservations at guest relations for all the restaurants when one begins the stay. If not, you are only able to go to the buffet at the main building. The first night it was difficult to find our room after eating as buildings all look alike. I recommend that you take a flashlight as the electricity sometimes goes off for a few minutes. It is quickly restored. Breakfast and lunch were excellent due to the variety of food for everyone's taste. The service personal at lunch and breakfast were wonderful. They remembered what we liked to drink - decafe coffee and lemon aide. We thoroughly enjoyed the beach from early in the morning until the afternoon. No problem finding chairs and overhead shade coverings. The water did have sea weed because of the waves. This didn't deter us from going in and swimming. The beach is continuously being maintained. My only negative comment is that I do not smoke, but numerous people did. A separate area should be designated for non-smokers. At night there was entertainment which consisted of music. This was mostly for adults and not for people with children. We also saw two weddings on the beach. All in all we enjoyed our vacation. We did take an excursion and saw how people live, how coffee and chocolate grow and how each is hand processed. I would recommend this resort

The Grand Bahia Principe in Punta Cana is over-rated. You are hard pressed to get the service and attention expected at a five star resort. If you are looking for night life, it is not here. Pools close at 6pm, bars at 11:30 and any entertainment to be found was absolutely pitiful. We were sitting in the lobby of the Esmeralda having a nightcap at 11:30 and they turned off the lights. The beach is beautiful, but you are constantly harassed by vendors selling crap. During my two week stay, I was only approached twice by servers asking me if I needed a drink while on the beach. I have been around the world and have never been to a resort where the staff had next to no comprehension of the English language. The food was plentiful, but quite mundane at the buffets. After experiencing the al a carte restaurants, the buffet became our choice. The restaurant food was pathetic and the wine was in drinkable. If this is the standard the Grand Principe sets for their resorts, you are best advised to stay away!

This was my first visit to Dominican Republic after many years of an annual vacation in Varadero Cuba. I was a little apprehensive at changing but was more than pleasantly surprised by what I found.First of all the food was of a very high standard, well prepared, well presented, a great selection and even in the buffet always fresh and hot. The specialty restaurants offered variety and when you get steak you can almost cut with a fork you know it is of a high quality.
The rooms were roomy, clean and if there ever was a concern it was fixed almost immediately. I saw no mould or broken fittings ect and the bed was excellent which with my bad back was extreemly important. Being a very large resort with five separate hotels getting around was made very easy by the buses provided which ran on pre set routes almost 24 hours a day and night. Staff were always helpful though at times it was a little frustrating for both sides due to their lack of English and my lack of Spanish, though in the end we could usually communicate.
The beach was all I had expected, you could walk for miles on firm sand close to the water, which was nice and warm. If anything I was a little dissappointed at the closeness of the beach chairs which gave very little personal space. But once I figured out where I wanted to be and got away from the areas of high activity it was fine. All in all a wonderfull two weeks and we plan to go back during our winter for some more sun and great service. I would reccommend this resort as with it's 3000 rooms there is a place for families, the young and us older crowd looking for sun, fun and relaxation.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that does not face on to the pool area.

I read a lot of reviews prior to picking this resort and continued reading review up until my stay so I could know what to expect. I was not dissapointed in this resort at all. The resort is HUGE! but the trolleys are frequent and oraganized. If you don't want to wait for a trolley it is a 10-15 minute walk to get to around the resort, but the grounds are beautiful so I did not mind walking on occassion. The food is not the best but it is good, the japanese al a carte was my top pick. The beach is awesome, the pools are huge and great for adults or kids. I traveled with a 12 yr old and 7 yr old and the mini golf and water park were a hit. The Isle Saona excursion is nice but it will take you away for an entire day so be prepared. The entertainment at the resort if not the best but it is certainly entertaining and good for both adults and kids. The rooms are a little outdated, but a/c was cold, rooms were clean, what more could you ask for. The mini bar fridge was lacking and not cold, but the staff was great and brought us bags of ice everyday during our stay so we could cool our drinks. The staff was great, friendly, and over all we had a great stay. It is very helpful to know spanish! Overall I would certainly return to this resort. BTW, we stayed in the Diamond Club, I thought the upgrade was worth it, the check in was painless, we were so close to the beach and pool and being able to use the Santa Fe for Breakfast and lunch was great!

Room Tip: All rooms are good, if you want to be close to the beach upgrade to Diamond Club.

Myself and my husband stayed here for 2 weeks and we had a fabulous holiday. There is plenty of sun beds on the beach which is constantly being cleaned thoughout the day, the pools are well maintained and again plenty of sunbeds to be had, however people still put their towels on beds and don't appear until late in the day. The rooms are very spacious and cleaned daily, towels are also provided daily. The food and service in the buffet was good but I did lose our table as ii couldn't remember where we were sat. it got very busy at the weekends as all the locals stay here for the weekend and do tend to get a little loud around the pool but its not offensive they are just having fun. The entertainment is good and is worth seeing however it is repeated each week. the size of the resort is immense but there is bus stops dotted all around so if you are feeling lazy just hop on one of the buses. We were a bit disapointed that you have to pay for a safety deposit box as it is usually included in all inclusive resorts. The lobby shop is quite expensive it was $7 for a packet of crisps $29 for shampoo so be prepared to pay alot for items you may forgotten. The snack bars around the pool were good but the coffee machine broke down every day. Overhall we had a good holiday and if you like a big resort this is the place to go.

Pros- beautiful landscaping, pools are nice, big and plentiful.
Beach was good-a little seaweedy but they rake it every day.
Service was good and usually friendly. Sometimes the pool bartenders seemed indifferent to Americans.

Cons- Not an all inclusive resort. I've been to several All Inclusive resorts and have NEVER been charged extra for anything. Not here- want Jack Daniels or Jim Beam, pay. Want the chef special as advertised in several theme restaurants, pay.
Want Internet in your room, pay.
FOOD - Mediocre AT BEST. 4 out of 8 of us ended up with stomach issues. Menu choices are ver limited. Sushi and BBQ restaurants were good.
Italian was terrible with a poor menu.
POOLS close at 7pm-really nothing for younger kids to do after that.
Hotels room walls are paper thin. Several nights we listened and were awakened to loud partying in rooms near us and one X-rated event also.
I would NOT recommend this resort. Spend the extra for a nicer resort with better food.

-The resort is MASSIVE! There are plenty of trolly's that bring you where you need to go.
-The grounds are immaculate. The rooms are clean, but a bit out dated.
-There is free Wi-Fi in the lobby.
-Don't forget your suntan lotion/sun block. They charge $30 at the hotel.
-E-mail the resort 2 weeks prior to going and book your A La Carte reservations (You can book 3). You can also request a room if you already have a location in mind. (I requested a secluded area on a higher floor as I was travelling with a 2 year old). Villa 73.
-DON'T book an appt. with the Privilege Club. They just try selling you a time share.
-We froze 7 bags of homo milk and brought it with us. Milk was defrosted and cold by the time we checked in. It lasted the entire 7 days. Even if we didn't bring it, she still enjoyed the milk they offered at the resort. Better to be safe than sorry. All was good.
-Beach is beautiful!
Overall great vacation at a great resort. Only minor problem was the rooms were a bit out dated, but you only sleep there anyways.
