“Great resort - would recommend”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

We went to the Gran Bahia Principe Bavaro for my husband's 50th birthday. The staff at the resort were very friendly and always said hello. The maid cleaned our room and left little flowers on the bed everyday. The grounds where immaculate and constantly being maintained. The pool was lovely and warm and the pool bartender always had a smile. The food was ok after awhile it seemed to be the same selection. A bit more variety in fruits would have been welcome but on the whole there was no reason to starve, you could always find something to eat. There was a different country represented each day which did allow for some variety, and the wine was free flowing. The a la carte restaurants where very nice, especially the Japanese and the Steakhouse. Staff there was also very very friendly. We did not know that there were actually five different places in the Gran Bahia Principe resort, maybe if we had know we would have selected another one other than the Bavaro. The main complaint of this particular one was the beer, All you could get was the beer on tap, and according to the others in my party it was not very good. If you wanted a mixed drink you could only get the cheap liquor brands and then the drinks were very inconsistant, One would be very strong and next would have no alcohol at all. Now if drinks were not of any importance to you then I would definetly recommend the Bavaro. The staff, pool and beach was fantastic. Maybe you should go and check it out for yourselves.

Room Tip: Room on the top floor was cooler then room on the ground floor. Both rooms we had were very clean an...

We have just returned from the Gran Bahia Principe on the 28th September, we were out there for my sister-in-laws wedding and were a party of 11. I have nothing but good things to say about the hotel, the staff were so friendly and particulary liked having a laugh & a joke with the kids. The maids cleaned our rooms daily putting in fresh towels and tidying our mess. The complex itself is huge with 6 al a carte restaurants and 2 buffet restaurants - they have a mini bus service that runs up and down the complex and they tend to run every 5 mins for you to just hop on and off when ever you like. You can walk to the restaurants and entertainment but in the heat its better to use the mini bus service. We visited 4 of the al a carte restaurants and they were always very accomadating of our huge party ensuring we were sat together as much as possible. The resort/rooms/pools etc are so clean, they have staff trimming bushes, tidying up trees, hose piping the pools on a regular basis. I would recommend the gold premier rooms as these are ideal for people who love to go to the beach - its only a 2 minute walk. The wedding itself was absolutely gorgeous - the hotel couldn't do enough for the happy couple. They decorated their room on the wedding night with rose petals, candles, swan towels, a fruit basket and complimentary champayne. We were also a bit wary about the weather in September as we had heard reviews about constant rain in the daytime but we had nothing but sunshine the full 2 weeks we were there, it was always in the 90's. I would definately go back to this resort in the future and certainly recommend it to anyone i know thinking of going to the Dominican Republic for a holiday or a wedding!

Room Tip: The Gold premier rooms are excellent - free mini bar fully replenished daily with beers and soft dri...

We have just returned from gran Bahia principe on the 29th of September after a day long delay.
There was a party of 22 of us. All there for my wedding. What can I say.. It was great!
The staff here are lovely and friendly and always willing to help you. The maids were great and always stopped to say hi if in the building. All the staff payed attention to our two young children, making them laugh etc.
the grounds of the hotel are beautiful and are constantly being maintained. Whether it be the grass bein cut, trees trimmed or floors been cleaned or painted.
The lobbies of the hotel are amazing, with marble floors ,comfy sofas and chairs to sit on. There is normally some form of entertainment here on a night too. Singer or dancer etc.
the food in the hotel is very nice, we steered clear of things that we didn't know too well. There wasn't a nite of of the 15 that we struggled to find something to suit everybody. (And the chocolate brownies are to die for)The ala carte restaurants are definitely worth a try. We had the steak house for our wedding meal and there wasn't a plate with a scrap of food left on :0). The Italian was also nice. French not so good (but I'm quite fussy with new foods).
The pools were clean and constantly kept tidy. There is a pool to suit everybody. There wasn't much entertainment in the pool closest to the beach unless you were near the swim up bar. (The deeper part so not ideal for kids). If your wanting a bed in the shade be prepared to get up early and place your towels on these. Don't leave them out over nite as people's often went missing from other groups.
Our rooms were great, fresh towels every day with the room clean, along with fridge restocked. We often tipped the maid and she would leave extra beers ;0).
Our wedding here was amazing. Our coordinator Roxanne was so lovely. Couldn't do enough for you and always had a smile :0). Our wedding ran very smoothly and was perfect. It was quite daunting going away to get married and not knowing much about it. But as soon as we arrived and had our meeting with Roxanne she assured us of everything and ran through what would happen etc.
This is definitely worth a trip to, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
we met some great people on this holiday and would definitely return. Holiday blues are now set in and we wish we were back.

This review is late as I went there a year ago (September 2011), but I still want to share my experience. Note that the dropdown box for choosing when I went there only went as far back as November 2011, but we traveled in September 2011.

A friend and I spent a week at the Gran Bahia Principe Bavaro; we did not pay to upgrade, but honestly I don’t really think that would have made much of a difference.

All in all we had no regrets about staying at this hotel; the vacation was great, and the hotel was very nice. I would classify it as a 4-star resort in a 3rd world country (so not quite up to the standards of a 4-star hotel in the states). With that being said, when I go back to the Dominican Republic one day, we will choose a different hotel because there was nothing with this hotel that stood out that would make us want to go there again. We would simply choose a different place to try something new. But whether you have booked already or not, you will not regret staying here.

Check-in for us wasn’t a nightmare but it wasn’t great. We were supposed to have two beds, as it was just a buddy and me on the vacation, but they gave us a room with one bed. It took them quite some time the day we arrived to get us a new room, so while we waited we just went to the buffet and had a late lunch there. However, we would have liked getting our room right away and being able to unpack our stuff and settle in. When we finally got our room, we discovered that the mini-bar seemed to be broken because it was not even cold inside. This is a big deal to us because at the end of the day we like to relax in the room and drink a beer or two, but that just wasn’t possible since the beer wasn’t cold. To call it “cool” would be an exaggeration. Our new room was also on the first floor, which we didn’t want, so we went to the front desk to get a new room because of these two problems. They did insist that the mini-bar was working fine, but to be honest we just didn’t believe it. So we were finally able to get a new room, but we didn’t get it until the next day. When we tried explaining our issues with the room, it’s as if the front desk forgot their English. They seemed to understand English just fine until you had some feedback or a complaint, and then all of a sudden their understanding of English became limited. Now I understand that we are in their country so if they don’t speak English that’s fine; however, I don’t like the fact that some of the folks at the front desk speak English just fine until you have a complaint.

More feedback on the room: The room was fine, it was maintained well by the maids, it was clean, there were no bugs as some people said there were. Some of the not so great things though is that the room had 2 double beds in it rather than 2 queens. This was fine since there were only 2 of us so we each got a double bed, but if you go with children and you want them in one bed and you want to sleep in the other with your spouse, you may find it a little “cramped” in a double bed. Another issue was the lighting; they had 3 sconces and a floor lamp, but each of the lights only had a 25-watt bulb in it, so it was just pretty dark in the room. So if you plan on reading or doing something else in the room that requires light, you might have some trouble with it. The air conditioner in the room didn’t work as well as it has in some of the resorts I’ve been in, but as long as you didn’t leave the doors open the room seemed to stay cool enough. And running the ceiling fan helps at night; we were actually somewhat chilled during the night so while the air wasn’t the best, it was sufficient. Just don’t think you can make it 70 degrees in the room; that just won’t happen. If there is an issue with the room, then it’s hit or miss as to whether or not anybody will come. We called for several things such as bigger light bulbs, towels, drinks (even though the mini-bar wasn’t real cold but we still wanted Pepsi’s), they may come right away, they may come in an hour, they may not come at all. So you may have to call several times if you need something. There were some complaints about the electricity turning off when you leave the room. However, there is a slot on the wall near the door that if you fold one of their paper coasters in half and put it in the slot, it will keep your electricity running even if you’re not in the room. This trick was also done by the maids so that will help your room stay cooler by keeping the air conditioner on.

Bathroom: Not terrible, but I’ve had better. Rather than a shower curtain or a sliding glass door, there is a glass panel that covers a little less than half of the tub, so you have to be really careful not to splash water and soap in the bathroom because you almost feel like there is nothing there at all. In addition, the shower head is one of the heads that comes off and can be used as a hand held, but the problem with the head was that it spreads the water in a huge circle, so you basically can’t get under the shower and have all of the water hit you. So you have to take it off and put it very close to your body in order for you to get hit with all the water. Finally, the lighting in there was just as bad. Frankly, I don’t see how women were able to put their make up on in the bathroom because the lighting was so poor. But all rooms have a Jacuzzi (or at least the two rooms we saw had one) if that is something that you’re into.

Food: The food is great. We only did the buffet, but there was plenty of food to choose from, and if you don’t like something, then you can eat something else. Ok, they do serve some “weird” things at breakfast, like beef strips, Vienna sausages, etc., and some people in some of the reviews have complained about that. But they also served eggs, bacon, etc., so if you don’t like Vienna sausages and beef strips or chicken for breakfast, then simply don’t eat it. Their hamburgers are a little weird too; they seem to have a lot of filler and are a bit “rubbery”. There is an easy solution to that though; don’t eat the hamburger if you don’t like it and eat something else instead. The snack bar by the pool near the beach was fine for lunch, though the selections were more limited than at the main buffet; however, its proximity to the beach makes it worth going to the snack bar. Rest assured; you will not go hungry.

Hotel overall: The grounds are beautiful, the pools are nice. There is plenty of shade but there are a lot of people who get up early and put their towels on beach loungers either by the pool or on the beach so you want to claim your spot pretty early to ensure you get what you want. The hotel grounds are large, but it’s not too bad to walk if necessary, but the trolley goes back and forth regularly so there’s no problem getting between the beach and the hotel lobby/restaurants. Each room has a small ice bucket but be forewarned; there are no ice machines anywhere on the property for guests to get ice. I’m not sure why they bother to put a small ice bucket in each room if they don’t have ice machines. The hotel lobby is open, so it’s not air conditioned. It stays pretty comfortable throughout the day. There are some ceiling fans on one end of the lobby but they don’t turn them on until the evening. There are no ceiling fans anywhere else in the lobby. If they had a bunch of fans going, it would make the lobby a bit more comfortable. The only reason why this matters is because the lobby is a nice place to sit and relax near the lobby bar. So while it was not unbearable, it could have been more comfortable if there were ceiling fans. The room safe costs $4/day but it is well worth the comfort of knowing you can lock up your valuables while you are out of the room. My recommendation would be to take the exact change for how much you will spend on the safe to make sure you don’t have any issues trying to get change out of the folks at the front desk.

So all in all, it was a very nice vacation and the price was definitely right. If you have already booked the hotel, then I don’t think you have anything to worry about; you will have a very nice vacation. If you haven’t booked here yet, I would do some comparison shopping and see if you can find another hotel for a similar price and do some comparing to see where you want to stay.

We stopped at the Bavaro side of the resort and had a fantastic time. Food was great and was always something that we liked. Weather was great with a couple of quick showers that only lasted a couple of minutes. The staff all were fantastic but one thing to remember is make sure you put everything in your safe that is valuable. We had a tablet pc stolen out of our room which was either a staff member or the maid leaving the patio unlocked after cleaning the room. The manager of the resort was helpful and tried to resolve the theft by getting security to question all people who had been in the room. Even though this happened we will still be going back because it was a great holiday.
If you are thinking of going on trips you must go see Pablo on the beach, he will give the best prices.

There was only one thing that was not good while we are there and really hate to say it but there were a lot of russian people that were very very rude and just thought it was there right just to push in while waiting to be served.

We are just looking at booking our holiday next year there.

We have decided to go to Dominican Republic just 6 months after our trip to Egypt and although "Caribbean Island" has always sounded very exciting we weren't expecting much more than we have seen in Egypt already - just maybe bit more of a beautiful sand, sea and weather...But what we have experienced there is just hard to describe!!!!

When we have arrived into the resort we were stunned by it's size - it is a large resort, however - thanks to the shuttle cars - moving around the resort is pretty easy (FYI - walk from beach to reception is 10-15 minutes anyway)...Rooms are also large (with gigantic bed) - and as anyone can expect from 5* resort - neat and tidy and cleaned up everyday - nothing to complain about...Garden - palms, exotic flowers and other plants - are everywhere - creating really amazing surrounding...

But the best part of the resort it's beach and swimming pool!!! Despite the fact that during the peak seasons GBP can accommodate up to 6000-7000 guests, the swimming pools are large enough to accept that number of people...Pools are very clean and - with swim-bars in them - you will be probably spending half of your time there...

Beach - also large enough for the resort - tidy with significant number of sun-beds and typical "palm-umbrellas" (even in the afternoon you won't have a problem to find a spot for yourself although the best areas will definitely be taken (bit of an annoyance - some people still tend to "mark" the beds as taken and then wander off for hours and hours - a specially in the morning - something should be finally done about that)...What is also worth to point out - and not everyone is aware of that - you can rent out water sports for free...such as catamaran or wind-surfing board...Anything with petrol thou (speedboat) is for cash...

Hotel staff is very friendly and helpful, food served in the main buffets and a la carte restaurants was really tasty, with gigantic choice which should keep happy even the largest picky-eater...Drinks - you could have them 24 hrs. a day...a specially margaritas...and pina coladas...

Excursion trips - Saona Island for sure!!!!!

In summary - amazing hotel with beautiful scenery, tasty food and drinks, friendly staff and brilliant swimming facilities - 100% recommended...

***For us it also had two a bit negative things (which hasn't affected at all our general feeling about our stay anyway, although it is definitely worth to mention them).

First one is a la carte restaurants - although the food in them is very, very testy and beautifully served, the way it is organized has surprised us a bit...Being used to a la carte restaurants where everything is served to table - we were bit surprised when (apart from Japanese and French) we were requested to get our selves starters and desserts in the restaurant buffet while only main meal was delivered as expected...It didn't ruin our dinner...although I can't deny that old-fashioned meals are much more preferable (f wanted a buffet I would go to the main restaurant)...Best restaurants to pick - Japanese, French Gourmet and Tex-Mex...

Second - are shops....The price in them is unbelievably excessive!!! Dominican Republic is not the wealthiest countries in the world so you will be shocked when you see the prices in resorts shops!! Products (as swimming shorts, bikini) which you will buy in London for £ 5 you will buy there for $ 30-40...Even sun cream is for $ 25!! Also - what you shouldn't expect from the hotel shops - they were making up the prices - one day we would pay $ 2 for a stamp and $ 1 for 2 x postcard when the very next day they have asked for $4 for stamp and $ 2 for one postcard!!! Rip-off!! Also I wouldn't recommend to buy any souvenirs in main shops - instead - take a 30 min walk down the beach and you will find a market used by locals where you can definitely barter a lot - much better place to spend your cash....

Defiantly upgrade to the diamond/hasienda club it's worth it just to be able to eat in the Santa fe restaurant at breackfast and dinner!! The themed restaurants are a must !!! Please ignore some people's petty issues as some people are never happy if you wake up and insist you want a runny egg every day or complain your tea is cold after its been on the table for ten minutes then this isn't the hotel for you !! But if u don't complain just to complain this hotel can't be knocked
