Stayed at this hotel over christmas and have to say was the best holiday i have ever been on! Went with my partner and his parents and found it accomodated all of our needs.

The hotel is huge, but think the description of the hotel makes you fully aware of this before you travel, so we didnt find this to be any surprise, but personally i found it an advantage to be big, as travel outwith the hotel (as with most caribbean places) is not recommended, therefore the hotel being big makes you feel like you dont have to venture out at all!

Rooms, extremely clean and good size. The food was beautiful, plenty to choose from and the a la carte restaurants were great (although like other reviews suggest you book asap to make sure you get the restaurants you want) Pools were clean and beach just to die for!

Between us we have all travelled to many parts of the world including the bahamas, mexico and also Dubai for last christmas and many more of the more expensive "apparently better" hotels and we would still to this day recommend the gran bahia principe hotels to others without any hesitation!

As with most hotels you there will always be people unhappy, but really you cant please everyone. But we found no faults at all!!

I visited The Bahia Principe in September from Glasgow for 2 weeks.

The hotel is about 30 minutes from the airport. First impression of the hotel was good. Our rooms weren’t ready, we had 2 single rooms next to each other, so we had a quick drink and they were ready 10 minutes later. We were in block 17. This block is near the reception and buffet. The rooms were lovely with Jacuzzi baths, 1 had a huge king-size bed and 1 had 2 doubles. The rooms were both large and very clean.

As this was my 11th time in the DR I knew what to expect but, even I was surprised at the quality of the hotel. This is the best hotel I have been to in the DR.

Food.
We only ate in the Japanese and the steak house but both were very good. The buffet had plenty of choice and the quality of all the food was first class. We even had lobster and caviar in the buffet 1 night.
Guests are treated to a glass of cava when entering the buffet for breakfast. You could drink cava all day if you so wished.

Pools/beach.
The beach was lovely. You did have to get there by 0830 to get beds with shade but that is not unusual anywhere you go. We always managed to get a shaded bed at either the beach or the pool even when we turned up one morning at 1000. The only complaint about the pools and the beach is there is a lot going on and can be a bit noisy but there was a lot to do if you wanted to keep entertained.

Excursions.
Having both been to the DR so many time we had done most of the usual excursion so wanted something different. We went for the zip lining and the VIP Catamaran. The zip line was a half day and was about a 2 hour drive including picking everyone up. It is highly recommended. The VIP catamaran was a 3 hour drive in total but a fantastic day where we met some great Americans, Pam + Joel, Misha + Carl, Paul and + Sandra, thanks guys we had a great day even when we got a flat tyre on the way home. We also ate the biggest lobsters I have ever seen. Highly recommended especially as it is limited places so no overcrowding.

Staff.
All the staff in the hotel are friendly and give great service. I always take $100 in singles and tip everywhere I go. Dominicans don’t get paid much and a small tip of $1 or $2 goes a long way.

There are lots of shops in the hotel offering the usual t-shirts, jewellery, sun cream, rum, cigars, coffee etc.

There is a big show every night at 2145 I only managed the Michael Jackson show but it was great.

The drinks are good and there is a cocktail of the day which you have to try.

We had 2 days of rain and even then we still managed to have lots of fun. The hotel has 2 wifi spots, 1 in reception and 1 at the top pool both free.

Don’t believe the negative reviews of this hotel as it is excellent. Our only complaint was there wasn’t anywhere to get peace and quiet, but the noise was people having fun so you can’t fault this. I would go back in a second and would recommend this hotel to everyone. This hotel seemed to cater for lots of Russians so if you don’t like the idea of this go somewhere else, personally I like mixing with different cultures. Feel free to message me with any questions.

Room Tip: The rooms by the beach are a distance from the buffet and night life so request a room near the buff...

We booked the Gran Bahia Principe Bavaro - All inclusive Club Hacienda junior suite package. The major issue for all to understand is the "amenities" or "inclusions" are NOT what they are portrayed to be on the reservation sites. They say "Unlimited Alcohol" from Hotel Bars, but they neglect to tell you that after 6pm the only bar open in the entire resort is the Hotel Lobby Bar which given the layout of the property is HALF A MILE (no exaggeration - look it up on Google Earth) from many of the best rooms and you either have to hike it there or take a shuttle which runs very randomly. Nothing near the pools or ocean for you to enjoy a drink and the scenery which is why you go to the beach in the first place...not sit in a lobby! They also proclaim that the mini-bar is unlimited and stocked daily, but they omit the fact that is contains 2 beers, 2 sodas and 1 bottle of water. Again, don't think for a minute that you can sit on your balcony and enjoy a few drinks with your guest. They won't bring more even if you call and ask. They also claim that there are all of these great restaurants to pick from as well as buffets. They don't tell you that they is a huge list of rules which you get at check-in about where you can't walk, can't sit, can't drink, etc. There is only one place you can eat which is the main buffet where food is below average at best. The "other" options they speak of are by reservation only and we were there in mid-Sept which they told us was the slow season due to the heat and of 4 nights we could only get 1 reservation at 1 restaurant. All of the other nights were supposedly BOOKED full. When I complained to a manager, they said they would try to squeeze us in on the last night of our trip into the Garden Grill at 7:15pm. I checked back with them earlier that day and they said they hoped to know by 4pm and I had to wait in the room for a call from either the restaurant or manager sometime around 4pm. If no call, they might leave a note under the door if it opened up later. I waited in the room from 3pm - 5pm watching some football and no call. We then waited around until 7:30pm and got no note so we gave up and went to the buffet extremely disappointed. We got back from dinner and found a note under the door saying there was an opening at 7:15pm, but if we were more than 10 mins late to that then our table was forfeited. They put the note under the door after 7:30pm saying we had to be there before 7:25pm. I immediately walked the note down the half-mile to a manager who said rather bluntly "what do you want me to do now as you leave tomorrow" while he cut a grin at the other lady sitting in the Club Hacienda office. Virginia and Inoel work in that office and are terrible. The management doesn't care about you or your experience. They all but said "we have you here and you paid your travel site in full so what are you going to do". With all of the great options in the Caribbean, just do NOT go here as I promise you will not be pleased. Some people probably didn't read the resort amenities and inclusions beforehand so they may not have been as surprised, but this was the first vacation where we truly considered paying American to change our flights and come home early because it was so disappointing.

Room Tip: Rooms are spread over a huge area. Anything by the ocean means you have to walk 1/2 mile back to lo...

we were put off with the size of the coplex the morning after we arrived we found the coffee makre did not work in either of the rooms went with brother and his wife we reported it and was fixed next day ,when i went to put my gold locket and earrings on they were missing, nobody wanted to no as we hadnt by that time activated our safety deposit box, everytime we went into reception there was people reporting things missing including clothes.as you can imagine it was a really bad start to the holiday, cannot fault the food or the girls who kept our glasses topped up with drink ,everywhere was packed rep said hotels were 98per cent booked so if you didnt get your towel on sunbed in early hours you had no chance , then to top it off another pair of earrings went missing on the day we left ,very expensive holiday and we were very let down.

Room Tip: diamond rooms near pools

I also read all the bad reviews and began to worry about what this holiday was going to be like, but on arrival we were very pleased. We booked hacienda rooms and it was worth the upgrade, if only for the fact of having rooms in the centre of the resort and for having breakfasts in the Italian, much more relaxed!
There are faults if you look for them but not as bad as some people make out, no different than most other all inclusives. The size of the resort isnt an issue, yes it's big but you only need to go to your room, the pools the beach, the lobby and the restaurants, you dont walk right round the resort! The buses are always on hand if the children dont want to walk!
We stayed at the beach most days, so the children could go in the sea and the main pool. The main pool is not my cup of tea as it was full of really drunk young americans and really drunk older spanish people!. If you are with children i suggest using the pool next to the 1 with the swim up bar in, much better for them as the drunks stay by the bar!!!
The sea had seaweed in, but it is the sea, what do you expect!!!!!!!! You couldn't snorkel very well because the visability isn't great, but that is due to the fact the sea is choppy. If you get the kayaks out you can snorkel a bit futher out.
The food is good and we can be fussy! We booked at different places throughout the week as eating in the main buffet every day would become a bit repetative and always make sure you book at a differnt place on survey night. As other reviews have said the staff are really aggressive on the night that you do surveys if you don't fill out a positive review, at 1 point we had 5 staff standing at our table waiting for my husband to fill it out!!
The best place we thought was the Italian, the staff were also really good in there. The other restaurants were ok. The food in the buffet was good and there was always something for everyone, no it is not fine dining but you are staying at an all Inclusive hotel catering for thousands.
The room was clean and the maid did a good job everyday, we did have to ring to get the minibar filled up once, they arrived within the hour and filled it, the next day we left a note for the maid and she filled it up.
The entertainment was ok, the kids enjoyed it, a bit repetative, but you can easily just sit and have a few drinks and play cards in the lobby.
Drinks are what you would expect at an all inclusive, although you could get some premium brands, just try a few and i am sure you will find 1 you like!
You do have to pay for the safe, which is a bit cheeky when you pay so much for the holiday. We didnt bother and locked our things in the case, it never got touched, we wouldnt usually do this!
Take all meds with you and suncream as this is very expensive on the resort.
We enjoyed this holiday, at the end of the day holidays are what you make them, if you sit there being miserable and picking faults with everything you won't have a good time, enjoy your holidays you only go once a year!!!!

Room Tip: Upgrade to hacienda (diamond club)
