“Never believe the negative comments!”
Reviewed July 8, 2011

I have never been to Punta Cana and did lots of research in their resorts before committing to any one of them. That is when i realized that there is negative comments on every single one of them. Some people will never be happy with anything! I just went with a resort that had a higher positive ratio than negative. This is what i think of the resort:

Our flight was delayed 4 hours and only got to the resort at 2:30am, the receptionist was amazing! He was nice, made jokes and handled everything quickly so we could go to our room for a must needed rest.

I was quite surprised at the food, it is incomparable to the food in Cuba. Everything was fresh and had diversity for every taste. There is a children's corner where pasta, hot dogs, hamburgers and pizza were served, a yogourt and cereal bar for breakfast and always a large array of fresh fruits and salad!

What i was most impressed is that it was very very very CLEAN, the hostess at the entrance will spritz hand sanitizer on everybody's hand b4 entering the buffet hall, and there was NEVER ANY flies around the food! But the most impressive thing i saw.... (coz i was peeking through the windows b4 the hall was open) was food inspectors! I have worked in the restaurant business all my life and i know the gadget they use. They test the temperature of the food they serving and the buffet containers and freezers b4 opening the doors to public! And i have to admit i have never been sick on the trip, and im the type to be very sentive to unsanitary food.

The room was pleasant, big enough for two people. The AC was AWESOME!!! Cool and fresh all day long, they even have a fan to help circulate the air in the room.

The washroom was fine, the toilet flushed fine, we always had warm water,.

Other than the dead cockroach we saw on the floor on the night we arrived, we never saw anything else. Although i might recommend you bring an extra towel to lay on ur pillow b4 sleeping.... i got some unknown bites on my face. Don't know if it was mosquitoes or other little bugs.

The entertainment.... well, we never really saw anything, when there was a show, there were no seats left to enjoy. The outdoor theater was never on, dunno if we were always at the wrong time. The casino was ok, small.... poker was never on....

The lobby bar was awesome tho, the drink were generous and amazing, wifi is available for 15$/24h and seats were always available.

The staff were awesome, never once did they wait on you for tip, or ignore you for lack of it. They always served you generously at the bar or smile and said hello everytime they pass you on the walkways. The room was always clean and the fridge replenished!

The beach was a bit disappointing, there is absolutely no room on the beach if you're a tad bit late in the morning. The sea was full of sea weed, the water was never clear enough for snorkling because of all the water activities going on. But it was cooling and refreshing nonetheless, we cant complain! It was till beautiful. The chair are in dire need of change, they sag and not comfortable at all when u lie on it.

---THE POOL---
The pools were nice, but too many children and the water were TOO warm.... maybe there is a connection? LOL

We tried the:
JAPANESE MAIKO = DISGUSTING, well, figures....
EL PESCADOR = DELICIOUS!!!! Lobster was delicious...

We did the Bavaro Splash, it was the most amazing experience in my life! We drove the speedboat in the sea, snorkled and SNUBA!!! AMAZING!!!! When u have this long hose of oxygen feeding u at the bottom of the sea. It was hard at first, but i did it and it was beautiful! All these beautiful fishes eating from right out of your palm.... make sure u have money tho..... so u can buy the videos and underwater photos from the guides.

Also make sure ur not easily sea sick as there were a lady on the boat that had major motion sickness and had to be rescued by another boat to take her back onshore (she missed everything).

This activity was not included, it's 90$/2 persons for a 10 minutes ride. It was beautiful tho..... you had to wait so long on the boat for your turn tho....... 2 h of waiting for a 10 mins ride..... it was worth it tho....... but you must be careful..... the pair of girls that went after me almost died. Their chute collapsed in the middle of the sea where the waves were storngest, got all tied up in the strings and waitted for a rescue boat! I watched everything from the shore.

The only thing i didn't like was the fact that they always bring these amazing creatures and you cant take pictures of it unless it is with their camera and you have to buy it.... we even got invited to visit the ESMERALDA resort only to be aggressively pursuades to buy a time share in the Gran Bahia chain..... the deals are amazing tho, they offered me plenty; an all inclusive to Jamaica & Hawaii..... but it is just too large of a commitment for me right now..... 25000$ in one shot is just too much right now. Anyhoo, they gave me a bottle of rum just for participating in this 3h discussion..... not all a waste tho.

My boyfriend and our friends (another couple) travelled here in June for 2 weeks and I can honestly say I don't have a bed word to say about the hotel. I am a travel agent so it is my job to be impartial towards hotels and I would be happy to send anyone to this hotel!!
We booked through Thomas Cook and paid to upgrade to Hacienda. On certain departure dates you can get free upgrades subject to availability but we paid to guarantee it. We had our own private pool which was smaller than the main pool near the beach but we enjoyed the quieter relaxed atmosphere. The 4 of us got sunbeds together everyday, although I would recommend being at the pool by 9 to get a sunbed. There are 2 other pools at the hotel, once across from the Hacienda pool which is the same except anyone can use it, then there is the pool by the beach-this is massive and very lively, lots of activities to keep you entertained!! Then there's the beach-stunning, you can walk for miles in either direction, free non-motorised watersports, there was banana boats and para-gliding available that you could pay for. Just off the coast was a shipwreck-this makes an excellent picture!!
FOOD:-Buffet gets a bit repetetive but I would say this for a 2 week stay at any hotel!! Food is very good and there is a massive choice. They cooked fresh pasta, fish and chicken every evening. There was a full selection of fruit, salad, desserts, breads and many other meat dishes. As part of the Hacienda benefits we were entitled to 4 visits per week to the a la carte restaraunts as oppose to the standard 3. We visited the Steak, Mexican, Japenese, Mediterranean, BBQ and gourmet. All these were excellent-the standard of food was out of this world. We actually made 2 trips to the BBQ-Rib Eye steaks, Jacket Potatoes, Onion Rings-all free flowing and if you wait patiently they are cooking fillet mignon!! Tip:-Book your resteraunts on arrival for your first week at least.
STAFF-Please do not listen to people who say the staff are rude and expect tips. We followed our reps advice who told us that the dominican people are very shy and if you start the conversation with a smile it really breaks the ice. We tried to use as many spanish words as possible so we didn't appear rude. The staff gave us the same service whether we tipped them or not. Please and Thankyou goes a long way!! We tipped using $1 bills and didn't feel the need to tip massive amounts and tipped extra where we received exceptional service. If they see you coming to the end of your drinks you'll find it replaced without having to ask-there attention to detail really made our holiday!!
Would really recommend going to the rep meeting especially to pick loads of useful hints and tips.
Evenings we watched the shows, had a drink in the lobby bar and then headed round to pueblo principe to the karaoke bar, casino and then later to the nightclub-although we didn't make it here everynight-expect the heat to zap your energy!! Loads to do at any time of day-or you can just sit, have a drink in the bar and entertain yourselves.
Rooms are very spacious and cleaned daily, mini bar is also re-stocked every day.
We did a couple of trips which I would recommend-buggy safari is fun-getting all muddy and dusty and seeing some of the real Dominican (take a scarf and glasses). Also Saona Island-fab boat trip-amazing beach BBQ included aswell as asmuch Rum as you can drink!! We booked both of these through our rep Leanne who was also brill!!
We will be booking to go back here again!!
Please feel free to e-mail with any questions you may have.

We stayed at the Bahia Princepe in Mexico 2 years ago and had the best holiday ever & we were advised by friends that if we liked Mexico we would love the Dominican, When we arrived we found that we had been upgraded to Club Hacienda Diamond, the first few days were nowhere near as good as Mexico and we were starting to wonder what the hell we had done & that we should have gone to Mexico again. After a few days I got floored with a stomach bug and couldn't eat or drink for a couple of days but still managed to get out and about. The food in the buffet restaraunt isn't the gratest & you have to get in early to avoid the mayhem. We found that if you went as soon as it opened it was quiter and you get served hot food & we always found something that we could eat. For our a la carte meals we booked into the BBQ & the Mexican for our first and found these to be terrible in my opinion, we then booked the Japanese & the steak house & the Itailian, the Japanese was great and it was a great way to meet new people if you can overcome the language barrier, The steak house was exellent, the steak soup was just like a stew and was quality, and the steak that we ordered were cooked to perfection. Our fav was the Italian, it was really good, all the a la carte menus don't really have much to choose from though, this would be my only gripe. We found once you had been there for a few days the waiters get to know your face and if you tip well you deffo get on a hell of a lot better, By the end of the first week we were getting paid a lot of attention from the waiters and we had a good laugh with them all, right back to the maid who cleaned our room daily. I know a lot of Brits are like, "why tip, its all inclusive", but $1 goes a long way in the Dominican, We will deffo be going back to this hotel in the future as we had a great time and now back at work with the batteries being fully re-charged.

Room Tip: E-Mail the hotel before you travel and ask to be upgraded

We just got back yesterday (7/5/11). This place has too many rules and not nearly enough luxuries. PROS: drinks are very strong, the rooms are very large, the black-out curtains in the rooms are great, the bathroom is large and decent, the mini-bar (beer, soda, water) is refilled daily with no charge, house-keeping is quick and efficient and pretty thorough (we only got a washcloth once though, so maybe bring your own), there is a swim-up bar, the ocean is beautiful, the buffet is ok, there is an umbrella in each room (it rains a lot), the tram runs often and is very convenient (after the first day, you will realize everything is very close and you don’t really need the tram). CONS: this place has WAY too many rules. There are lots of pools, but you will only be able to use a couple. Pools are restricted depending on which resort you are in- Amber, Esmerelda, Punta Cana, Bavaro. Good Luck getting a pool lounger, and don’t even dream of getting one under cover. You can exchange your wet, sandy beach towels anytime you want, but somehow they were out of towels 4 of the 5 days we were there. The pool hours are 10am-6pm. Are you kidding me? I am on vacation at a resort and must get out of the pool at 6pm- crazy. There are quite a few restaurants, but you can only eat there once for a three night stay and twice for a four night stay. Oh yeah, and good luck getting a reservation. As others have stated, make the reservations as soon as you arrive. We waited until day 2 and there was only one reservation left- Mexican at 10pm. Yuck. Do NOT make reservations for the BBQ restaurant- it is outside and the food is poor. Since you won’t be eating dinner in the restaurant, you will always be eating in the buffet area. Check the hours, there are LARGE chunks of time when there is NO FOOD. For example: Breakfast is 8-11 (food is taken away at 10:30), Lunch is 12:30-3:30 (food gone at 3pm), Dinner is 6:30-10pm. There are a couple of snack bars open noon to 4pm or 6pm, but the food at these is quite unappealing if you get there within an hour of closing. The AC in the rooms is kind of pathetic- it is ok if you don’t move around much and you keep the black-out curtains closed. There is AC in the restaurants, but it is even worse than that in your room. Be prepared to sweat constantly. Make sure you bring sunscreen, if you buy it there, the price is about $25-$45. Bring an insulated mug to put your drink in, especially at breakfast, the glasses there are about 4-6oz. Bring some bug spray and use it on your lower legs at night. The bugs (mosquitos?) are vicious and seem to attack the ladies. DO NOT go on the buggy-adventure trip. It is AWFUL. You drive (and you must drive very carefully or they yell at you) through an extremely poor, very depressing area. The “roads” are horrible with giant puddles everywhere. Keep in mind, that “water” is filled with tons of animal poo- you can tell by the piles that are sitting everywhere. You WILL get sprayed and COVERED in poo-water. NASTY. You stop at an incredible beach, but only for 15min. We technically only got 11min, but who is counting, right? Bring lots of dollars for tipping, or harden yourself against the constant out-stretched hands. Check to make sure your balcony door is locked after each room cleaning. Ours kept being left unlocked, which made me nervous since we were on the first floor. The door keys stop working randomly. If you are handicapped, do NOT come here. Ramps are atrocious. All of the handicap-accessible rooms are on the THIRD floor and there are NO ELEVATORS. I don’t understand it either.

I have never ever written a review about a holiday but due to all the bad ones on here i just felt like i should say DO NOT BELIEVE THEM!!! This place is huge but after a day of exploring we pretty much knew our way about... walking in the sunshine in beautiful surroundings, not really something anyone should complain about... we loved it and would go back any day :) The grounds were immaculate, shuttle buses were v frequent but we just walked most of the time, the food was yummy and varied, the staff were helpful and friendly, the pool was great, the beach was stunning and never overcrowded... everything was perfect so please do not hesitate to go here :) that is all........!! Happy holidays!

Our friends were getting married at this resort, which is how we chose it. The resort did a horrible job with the wedding - everything was late, important items were forgotten, music guy answered his cell phone during the ceremony, the groom was at the aisle waiting on the bride when a caterer walks in and down the aisle carrying appetizers for the cocktail hour. It was honestly ridiculous how much went wrong.

Wedding aside, the place was not that great. My biggest problems were that it was impossible to find chairs by the pool or beach. I guess people get out there at 8am and throw their towel on a chair in the shade and then go about and do other things. There will be 20 people at the pool, yet all the chairs are "taken". The second biggest problem was that the food was not good. There was plenty of it, but it was bad. All the meat was dried out and gross. There was no seafood, except for some crappy, cheap fish.

The third thing is that there was very little information about anything. It was difficult to learn what restaurants you could eat it and when you could eat there (some require a reservation, some are only avaible for certain type of guests, etc). It was also hard to arrange anything. For example, if you wanted to make a reservation for one of the good places for dinner, you could not call but had to go down to the front desk (which could be a 5-15 minute walk depending on where you were staying) only for them to tell you that all the reservations are fill.

Of all the people we went with, I don't know anyone who didn't get locked out of their room at one point because their keys stopped working. This included the bride and groom. After the reception, the bride had to wait at their door in her wedding dress while the groom went to the front desk to get the keys fixed. The staff person working said "no problem, I'll get it fixed." Um, it was definitely a problem!

The room was okay. It was spacious and clean.

We booked a quick 3 day getaway to Punta Cana for the July 4th weekend. Loved the Dominican. Bahia Principe was a great resort. It's a really huge resort but they have pretty decent shuttle service that takes you back/forth.. We mainly only ate at the buffet and the snack bar at the beach.. The restaurants need a reservation. But the buffet has a theme night everynight so pretty nice. The main pool area has a nice kiddie section so perfect for infants/toddlers etc. The night time shows at the Theatro Tropicana was awesome. Each night is a different show and a lot of fun.
