“A great place to vacation”
Reviewed February 23, 2014

James Bond (nickname), Red Bull (nickname), Blondie, Najuk, these are just a few of the people that make this place a place to remember. They were excellent!!! The staff was really helpful and entertaining. This is a very relaxing place. The pools and beach were great. Each one had a bar and lunch each day. The rooms were very clean and large. Each evening had a special event. The food was great. I would highly recommend this resort.

Room Tip: We had a corner room. The room was large and the outside balcony surrounded the outside corner. We...

What a great hotel! Was kind of quiet while we were there, so not a lot of people. The staff were excellent, especially Ynocenio the bartender! Always outgoing, speaks almost perfect English, and makes sure the drinks are always being poored! Edita, out favorite server was also amazing! Going above and beyond to go get the exact kind of drink you want, even if that bar was out or didn't serve it for you.
The only drawback, the beach is a LONG walk and very disappointing when you get there. Also, location of this resort is kind of "rural", no towns or anything nearby to explore without an expensive can ride or renting a car.
The food was very good, not quite what I would call 5 Star but acceptable. Would be nice if in the evening, there were more bars other than the one in the lobby that were open.
We were all inclusive, but still had to sign bills every time we ordered something, which became quite inconvenient after the first day. Maybe a colored bracelet would be better?
Overall, great hotel, fine for kids, as long as your ok with staying at the resort most times.

The Al Sol Luxury Village hotel is a very quaint "village" like hotel in the sleepy marina area of Cap Cana which is south of the major hotel zone of Punta Cana. Being nestled in the marina, the feel of the resort is much less of a traditional all inclusive "beach factory" and much more of an open space resort with a European feel to it. The beautifully roomy, sprawling grounds and layout allows you plenty of space to find whatever piece of mind you desire. The resort never felt over crowded. If you are looking for a low key, quiet, beautiful atmosphere, this is the place. There is such a calm energy to the place you feel relaxed right away. This is a very different environment than the hustle and bustle of the resorts in the Bavaro region of Punta Cana so just be sure that is what you are looking for. If it is you will love the Al Sol!!

The major highlight of the resort are really the design of the pool areas. There are more than enough pools with a large spacious main pool, a quiet low key pool and a small pool near the marina and italian restuarant. The main pool is nestled between palm trees and has individual areas of kids pool, beach slope access, a bridge, a volleyball area, etc. You could easily find your own little oasis and don't feel crowded or on top of people. They probably could use a few more beach chairs but it was easy enough to move them around. There was never not a place to sit.

The room accommodations are also really outstanding. You will be very impressed with the room sizes and accommodations. Generally the rooms are all very spacious (some of the biggest you will ever see at a Caribbean beach resort). The 3 bedroom diamond suite is like a house. It has 3.5 bathrooms! The 2 bedroom is more than adequate for most families and they will bring an additional bed if you ask. We got a family of 5 in a 2 bedroom with no problem. Many of the rooms have spacious outdoor spaces and some even their own private pools. It's like rock star accommodations.

Once you get your bearings of the grounds, you will be very impressed with the design of the resort. It takes a day or two to understand the layout which is architecturally clever with the lobby at a different elevation than the two major pools. There are several shortcuts and stairways that connect the different elevations. The beach area is at the end of the marina and is a small walk. Too many reviewers complain that is too far and some even take a golf cart, but that is ridiculous. It's close enough to walk.

However, the beach itself is not that big and is not really a typical beach area at all. It is more of a marina cove that was constructed between two jedi's. They have done a great job of making it a nice place to relax with a great beach bar restuarant and lounge chairs and beach beds. It's well worth a lazy afternoon snooze or hang on one of the beach beds. You can go in the water as well, just don't expect much of a traditional Caribbean beach. You will need to go elsewhere for that.

The grounds really have a lot of potential. As more shops and stores come into play this will become a very lively commercial environment as well. It will have a metterrainian feel to it. The environment can feel a little "ghostly" and empty at times but that is not always a bad thing! It was nice to be at a resort and not feel overly crowded or like you were in a "factory".

In terms of the food, it wasn't bad for an all inclusive. They definitely could use some more dinner choices, but the buffet and Italian restuarant are actually pretty decent for an all inclusive. The buffet is perfect for breakfast and lunch. You can get cook to order egg ommlettes in the morning and cooked to order fish for lunch and dinner. The Paella and seafood sautees were really good. The baked goods were also very good. The fresh fruit juice (such as Passion Fruit) was very unique. The fruit and cheese selections did vary and were not always available, but generally decent. The hours seemed a little restrictive and it would be good if they always had snacks available.

The resort staff is really great and is trying very hard to please the guests. They are really an attentive crew. This was a big highlight. Before we even arrived, Victoria was responding with us via email to clam our nerves about some of the poor reviews that were posted in Dec 2013 timeframe. She assured us we would be fine and she was very right. One of the managers, Jose Mateo was really outstanding. The concierge team of Scarlet and Eileen? were very helpful and greeted you by name everyday. Melvin the main pool bartender was very efficient (but could use some help). Alexander one of the bell made anything you needed happen (he even paid for my cab when I didn't have the right change). James Bond and Redbull (no joke) were full of energy. Almost everyone you encountered was trying hard to accommodate your requests. They may not always get it right but are willing to try and fix things. And that means a lot. Keep it up!

Overall we had a great, relaxing stay. I would definitely recommend this place and could see going back. It really had a "diamond in the rough" feeling. It was a great value as well. Here are some tips based on our experiences:

* There is a pretty wide variation on the room types and locations so if you don't end up where you want or with a view you enjoy, it's worth talking to the resort management team to see what they can do. One of the managers, Jose Mateo, was able to find us a great penthouse location with private pool! It was an outstanding room. Hat's off to Jose for providing that. He was outstanding.

* For lunch, the beach restaurant (Restaurant Playa) run by Frances Hernandez, is well worth the walk. We went almost every day. The food is very good as is the service. The fresh ceviche is outstanding, there is a whole red snapper, grilled shrimp and generous hamburgers and chips and queso and chicken with beans is great. The swings by the bar and tables are a good way to relax and kick back. It's just a great setting.

* Visit the Sanctuary, the Alsol sister property. There are a few additional restuarant selections such as the Steakhouse and Blue Marlin worth visiting. The pool area is not as nice at the Al Sol but there are a few more activities by the pool. There is supposedly a casino onsite but it did not appear operational when we were there. A cab ride is $3 USD each way.

* Visit Juanillo beach which is located right next to the Sanctuary hotel. The setting is just amazing and a big mistake if you don't visit it. Beautiful pink sand and aqua colored water provide for a setting unseen in many beach locations. It's a must see. There are small covered pavilions with chairs and lounge chairs but they fill up fast. The beach restaurant serves food and drinks but it is relatively pricey. There are bathrooms on the beach or you can walk to the Sanctuary hotel. Do bring your own towels. A cab ride is $3 USD each way.

* Do the bike tour of the marina at 11am or 4pm. Redbull, our tour guide was perfect. It's a great way to see the other side of the marina. There are many boats, luxury residences, beaches, some restaurants and shopping.

* Consider renting a car. If you plan on staying in the Cap Cana area, it probably is critical as most taxi rides are $3 USD each way. But if you want to go into the Punta Cana area cab prices get crazy and can cost $35-$40 USD each way. I would book the car in advance and pick up from the airport as the deals from the hotels are not that good.

* Check out the nightclub. It is beautiful inside with a stunning white diamond decor stetting with it's own pool in the center. It felt a little empty at times but worth checking out. This is not a party scene resort so if you are expecting that type of environment you will be disappointed.

* Check out some of the nightly activities such as the outdoor movie night in the marina or the beach bonfire. Some of the shows in the lobby were small but nice. Don't expect grand performances but worth stopping by after dinner. And the lobby bar is right there!

* Explore some local restaurants. To spice up our dinner choices, we ventured out to some local restaurants for dinner. Some of them will actually provide you transportation at their cost.

The Al Sol is on it's 3rd resort management company and they are still trying to get the kinks out of the system. There are simple things like not enough towels at the pool facilities, shortage of bar and waitress staff and limited activity staff. This team seems to be on the right track and they are all trying very hard. Here are some areas for suggested improvements:

* More towels available at the pool during the day. If you didn't get a towel early you might be out of luck.

* Adding a hot tub to the premises. There is no hot tub on premises, having one would be great for late afternoon hangs.

* Having more snacks available. It is not easy to get snacks (cheese and crackers, etc.) around happy hour time. The lunch places close around 6 pm and don't really have snacks. The lobby buffet does not open until 6:30 pm. It would be nice if you could get snacks to tide you over until a later dinner. Our kids would get hungry around late afternoon and not have many options.

* Having more options for dinner. There are only two options, the Italian restuarant and the lobby buffet for dinner. While they are both decent, they do become a little monotonous. It would be good if there was a third location. Its too bad that the restuarant in the marina by the nightclub is not part of the AL Sol.

* Having a small store or mini-market on premise would be very useful for incidentals. It would be even better if there were small shops in the plaza as well. So potential for commercial businesses there.

* Having more kids club activities like painting, drawing and other arts and crafts would be useful for the kids to break up the day.

* Organizing more water volleyball or sand volleyball games during the day. While these were listed on the activities sheet each day, they never once played during the entire week. Maybe it was due to not enough people but the other activities such as zumba, etc. seem to have enough people. Probably need more event staff to organize it better.

* Allowing guests to use/rent bicycles on their own. While the bike tour was great, I would have loved to be able to take out a bicycle to explore the area on my own. Especially riding over to the other side of the marina.

* Having a few more beer selections besides just Presidente. The wine selections were actually fairly nice. And the selection of liquors, included top shelf was decent. Sometimes the bar would run out of certain stock which was annoying. Sometimes top shelf choices were "missing".

* Having a water taxi to take you over to the other side of the marina to visit the restaurants or shops.

So overall you won't be disappointed. If you want something relaxing, the AlSol won't disappoint!!

Room Tip: Higher floor rooms have great views of the pool area. Marina rooms have pools and overlook the marin...

Our family of four (2 children ages 5/7) booked this trip last minute and we couldn't be happier! There are many excellent things to say about this place, but the most outstanding has to be the staff--especially the entertainment team (James Bond, Nabuk, and Blondy; Red Bull was there for one day of our stay also). James Bond was happy and upbeat and encouraged people to get involved in the activities in just the right way, and was fantastic with all ages! The entertainment was perfect--enough to keep us having fun, but not "too much", like I've seen at other places. Perfect blend of mellow and relaxing and fun. When we went on one excursion off the resort that didn't go so well, we couldn't wait to get back to the pool and the people (James Bond!) at AlSol. The staff at the restaurants, check-in, concierge, etc. were all great as well, and I found it easy enough to communicate with our very limited Spanish.
We got to the hotel early, and were able to check in right away, and we were greeted with cold champagne and fruit juice. The food was also really good, particularly the breakfast buffet. Room service would be a nice plus, or maybe a small grocery mart on the grounds, so that families can have a meal/snacks in the room, especially on the first day of travel. The hotel did stock the refrigerator with some bottled water and soda, which was nice, and replenished it.
We went to the beach one afternoon, and you could tell it was new and nice, but we just loved the main pool area so much we stayed there the entire trip (and we are usually beach people).
The room exceeded our expectations as well: large, clean, brand-new, nice decorating touches, HUGE deck. Next time, I will book a view of the ocean or pool, as the view off our deck was of an area being developed/water inlet, but it was also nice and quiet.
All in all, this place is just great for families. I hope to come back ASAP!
*If you want to go off-resort, rent a car as cabs can be expensive.

Beautiful place. Rooms are even nicer than online, they are actual condos. The staff is super friendly, especially David at the lobby bar.

The only things I could say that weren't perfect was the small beach. Although it is quiet and private, the water is a bit dirty since it is located at a boat dock. Also the bars close at 1am, they should be open 24hrs.

Everything else was absolutely perfect. Food is top notch as well. I would definitely recommend it to everyone.

I stayed at this property the first week inn Feb. I found it to be very very good. The rooms are very spacious and beds super comfortable. Also I found the food really good. For me what was prepared was done with attention to detail. The kitchen staff knows what they are doing. The variety was also excellent. Finally it all comes down to the staff. They were always eager to please and they seemed to take pleasure in making sure we were happy. Everyone gave their time and their smiles were genuine. I hope to return next year.
