Owner description: The Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park and Reserve is a private protected area owned and operated by the PUNTACANA Ecological Foundation. Consisting of lowland subtropical forest, the reserve covers 1,500 acres of land dedicated to conservation, scientific research, and recreation. The Ecological Reserve is a forest reserve with twelve freshwater lagoons, five of which visitors can swim in. Historians discovered that the Taíno Indians, the pre-Columbian inhabitants of the island, referred to the lagoons as “eyes” because of their distinctive shape. For this reason, the Ecological Park and Reserve was named “Ojos Indígenas” or “Indigenous Eyes.”The Ecological Park consists of numerous exhibits describing the cultural and natural history of the island. Visitors can visit a petting zoo with many domesticated animals common in the Dominican Republic since colonial times, a sugarcane exhibit, an iguana habitat and many other attractions.

“Worth leaving poolside..”

An easy walk to see some of the local flora and fauna. And a cooler place to swim than most resort pools.

“Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 25, 2013

Recently visited this hidden gem with some local friends who drove us. I had heard of this place and had seen photos but they don't do the beauty justice. I really enjoyed our walk through the forest to get to the lagoons. Once there I was amazed at the clarity and colour of the waters. The water was very cool but so refreshing after our hike. Make sure to wear your bathing suit.

Please, everything you bring in with you, take back. Don't leave your trash to spoil the natural beauty.

“Pretty and quiet get away”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 17, 2013

Worth taking a walk through this forested area. There are nice fresh water lagoons with turtles and fish to look at and you can swim in one of them - so bring your suit. It's located on the Punta Cana Resort and there are tours you can get from other resorts. The beach there was quiet and lovely with great shorebirds to view.

“Explore the forest with Christian”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 23, 2013

Christian lead us through a leisurely two mile walk of this preserve which is located right by the ocean. He was very knowledgeable and a gracious host. This preserve gives you a look into the geological history of the island. The foundation's efforts in re-establishing native trees and in sustainable agriculture are a nice break from the glitz of the big name resorts.

You will have to insist on the walk/hike as this is the same place from which they do the Segway tours and the resort people will try to sell you the Segway. Insist on the hike and ask for Christian as your guide.
