We had a great time at this resort. We travel to this area frequently and this resort had very helpful staff and great food. Carolina our hostess at the Japanese restaurant, Mailen our server there and Jasime at the breakfeast buffet were just fantastic.

Hugh beautiful 4 resort property. Very lush and tropical. Best beach we have been to. You can walk for miles and swim with totally sand bottom. Aqua Blue!!!! Very international and people were very helpful and friendly. We had the most beautiful ocean front room which was a Jr. suite. Liked the Palace buffet the best along with the Japanese and Seafood Rest was our favorite. Shows were fun. Felt like we needed a bit more resort direction at first and the room service was lacking a bit. There are alot of guys selling excurisions on beach around pool and in lobby who are very nice, but I wonder why they are allowed there so much. I guess March is known for being very windy so would consider April.

Room Tip: We were in Bld 4 which was close to everything pool beach lobby.

Dear Mr. Manager,

I've seen you reply quite often to reviews, I'm glad to see that, thank you for paying attention. I've read the reviews before going to your hotel (but, unfortunately, after buying the trip), and I've seen that most of the negative reviewers were right, though we did not experience problems in all the aspects mentioned.

Pros: - many reviewers reported problems with rooms, and most of the other problems they reported seem to have happened to others in our group, as well. But we were lucky, the room was fine, nothing to complain about. This indicates that the complaints of customers have been heard, though I'm not sure are addressed in a reasonable time. Improvements seem to catch up, slowly.

- very welcoming and warming staff at the reception and around (they understand that without tourism they have nothing to eat, and treated us very nicely)

- room kept clean every day, bathtub in room was great, employees climbed trees to cut down coconuts and gave them to us to drink and eat them (very nice and exotic, appreciated)

- buffet restaurants were ok and there were more of them throughout the hotel, food was good, little variety but good enough for a week. drinks were bad (see Cons), but the a-la-carte restaurants were great (recommend brazilian and mexican). again, except the drinks.

- sports area very good, though the minigolf field needs to be fully rebuilt...

- shops were ok, but I found the items rather expensive compared to 20-30 other countries that I've traveled to

Cons:
- worst problem ever, reported by most people: there are annoying salesmen everywhere on the beach and among the hotel alleys, who are advertising on their own, they are not hotel employees. this is probably the only thing I cannot let you get away with. they are annoying and pissing off tourists, and they sit ON THE PROPERTY OF THE HOTEL which means you are doing NOTHING to kick them out (they are there because you consciously tolerate them). Even the beach should be the property of the hotel, and they should NOT be allowed there, either. They are aggressive and not exactly what you expect from a vacation. Sometimes they wake you up or even pinch you to get your attention. I've never seen anything like this in Mexico, there are no such annoying "salesmen" there.

- the sunbeds on the beach are indeed, as many reported, "booked" by placing towels on them. about half of them were "reserved" by people even since the night before, and the other half were taken by 6:30 a.m. this did not affect me personally since I always got up at 6 - 6:30 and managed to find a few good spots left, but at 7 there was nothing left and I understand this could be annoying for people who don't go there to wake up just to place a towel. some people didn't even use towels but personal items, and then started fighting over the sunbeds with others who "reserved" them (the same ones) with towels.

- (little to do with your hotel) excursions are total CRAP. there is really NOTHING that the Dominican can offer in terms of excursions. We paid HUNDREDS of dollars for 2-3 hours of excursions, saw nothing but a bunch of fish, and some lame animal shows that lasted 10 minutes. Everywhere outside the hotel, everyone asks for money on every occasion. That makes it no better than Turkey...

- drinks were poor. beer is crap (no offense, corona is times better), wines were tasteless, everything better was charged (though this was an all-inclusive package). low variety overall, though this did not affect me personally too much. It was sad though not to drink much alcohol for being to crappy.

Bottom line:
Mexico vs. Dominican? Mexico each and every time and for each and every reason.
Your hotel vs. Other 4* hotel or no trip? Your hotel
Your hotel vs. Other 5* hotel? Other 5* hotel (a better choice seems Barcelo Bavaro for just $75 extra)

Overall Rating: 3* just because the caribbean in general is way above many other vacation sites. But you compete with Mexico as well, and there, I'm sorry to say, you lose...

Room Tip: Superior (e.g. deluxe or better) rooms have a better chance of having less problems

After visiting the Grand Palladium complex seven times in seven years, it feels like a second home. The staff who are not new generally recognize us and come to greet us with hugs and kisses. We appreciate their service and they must appreciate how we treat them.
Before we get to the resort per se, let me comment on other matters. Firstly, we were delayed by a day when our Westjet airplane couldn't leave because of a malfunctioning valve in an engine. (The temperature was on the order of minus 34 Celcius). The pilot said that it would have been unsafe to go without a replacement (which was not immediately available). We had sat on the plane from about 6 a.m. until 9 a.m. The airline provided some food and taxi vouchers for those that needed them. We did the rerun the next day, and all went well.
The other matter which was problematic was the trip representative in Punta Cana. We dealt with the Thomas Cook agency in town and, in order to save a goodly amount of money, opted for the Holiday House (Sunquest) option of the trip, which was nominally a Westjet holiday. The representative at our complex was totally disorganized. We could not find him for a number of days and he didn't seem to know which section we were in. For a meeting scheduled in our section, he would be in another. Truthfully, he was worse than useless. It's a good thing we were familiar with virtually every aspect of the complex.

Now to the matter at hand- the resort. We arrived at about 5 p.m. Dominican time and were greeted at reception by Jose Manuel, a newer employee, and by Faustino, who recognized us and welcomed us back "to our home". There were a few matters that needed to be looked after during our stay and it seemed to fall to Jose Manuel to do the looking after. He did it all with a smile, and greeted us as acquaintances at other times, calling me by name. Well into our second week there, Jose introduced us to his manager, and she referred to him as her right arm.
As we were about to leave the resort on our last day, the manager presented us with a ceramic sculpture which I believe was from Jose. It is these signs of affection which keep us coming back to the complex.
As far as the physical aspects of the resort, the grounds are always being tended to, and look lush and colourful. The buildings are well looked after and some are being torn down and replaced with new ones (The La Uva restaurant, which has become a fast food lunch place on the beach side, and two a la carte restaurants on the other- pool- side.) The Royal Suites section, where we stayed on our first visit to the complex, has been greatly expanded.
The rooms are well tended to and the fridge is restocked every day. We personally just use the water, as everything else is always available at the bars, if we feel the need.
We find that there is a goodly variety in the foods available, so that even a picky eater like myself can always find enough to sate oneself. There are theme nights each evening, and my favourite is Mexican night. The specialty restaurants that we go to are the Mare Nostrum (Italian) and the Mariachi (Mexican). We have found that if we order all the courses, we have trouble finishing all the food.
For activities, we are beach people, and spend all day there, except when we go in for lunch. We walk early on, and also in the afternoon. I also like to wind surf. Towards the end of the day we will sometimes go in for a dip. We don't use any of the other facilities, sports or otherwise.
We used to go to some of the evening shows (10 p.m.), but, as we are early risers, and as we have seen similar presentations before, we now go to bed earlier. For those who haven't seen the shows, I would recommend doing so. We are not fans, however, of the earlier "audience participation" events. To us they are rather boring.
The main thing that makes us feel at home is the staff. I've mentioned the staff at the reception. The other staff which we see every day is that in the restaurants. We ate breakfast at the El Behique, lunch usually at the El Bohio and dinner usually at the Las Torres. Some of the staff who have been looking after us for years are, for breadfast, Olga Lidia, Rosa and their jefe (chief) Milady. For lunch, Deysi, for dinner our no. 1 server Alix, and his jefe Jose, and at the Mare Nostrum, Joanny. Through the years I've had crepes prepared by Altagracia, Geovanny and Guadalupe.
From time to time, we talk of going somewhere else for variety, but so far we have always ended up back at our "second home". Just like a comfy pair of shoes.

Room Tip: We try to avoid rooms in the middle of buildings with long hallways.

the resort was clean, however the food was mediocre, and the service was horrible. On more than one occassion we couldn't get a waitress/waiter to take our drink order, or they brought us one drink and never bothered to refill our drink. The shower was awful, if you don't put the shower head in the right direction or you end up with a stream going throughout the bathroom. Getting towels, washclothes, hand towels, and bath mats is like pulling teeth. Hello those are basic necessities, what is wrong with this picture? If you go to the palladium website, don't believe all the postive things, as we listened to them, and were extremely dissappointed. Good luck if you decide to go.
