“EXCELLENT HOLIDAY”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

We enjoyed a week of bliss the last week of August with a group of 10 family members. This was our 5th trip to the Palladium Palace and are going back again in a few months, it feels like our second home. Service was good, from the bartenders, maids, even the front desk. Always leave a few gifts for our favourite people as well as tips which are well deserved. I don't know what people complain about, this is a great resort for the money. We've stayed at the Melia Caribe a few times, but prefer the Palace.

Loved the 2 new restaurants (the Italian and Steakhouse). They share a fabulous updated bar just before you enter either restaurant. The atmosphere is wonderful there with the dried iced, they keep topping up your champaign. Loved the cappucinos every morning at the buffet as well as the crepes!!

The beach is awesome. Some of us did parasail, dunebuggies, dolphins, and deep-sea fishing. Booked the deep-sea fishing in a shop facing the ocean in El Corticio, had the boat to ourselves (5 people) plus the crew. Also had a few massages on the beach with the ocean and the breeze, excellent. ($60). They are a little more expensive at the Spa.

For a change of pace in the evening went to the other lobby (Bavaro lobby) and Hemmingways (tucked in behind the Bavaro lobby) for some top-shelf cognacs and drinks. Also went to the Casino most nights for a little roulette. All in all, love the Palladium Palace because everything is so central.

All the activities, shows, menus for the different restaurants are all posted on the wall in the lobby (just where you wait for the trains).

My friends and family actually went down to celebrate a friends wedding and I must say it was our first time in Punta Cana. We had a really good time, the rooms were clean, pool bar was great with El Tiburon our bartender and now friend. The beaches and pool were kept clean, the buffet food and restaurant food was really good. I found all staff to be friendly and courteous. Wedding setting was really nice. The hair dryer in the room didnt work and when I called for repair they came immediately. The refrigerator in the room was kept stocked every day with sodas, water and other beverages, best of all we had a mini safe in the room we could utilize without additional charges. The overall experience was good and we bad a blast I would def visit again or recommend. Compared to some of those resorts who are claiming to offer a lot of things over the internet and are actually run down resorts....the Grand Palladium in Punta Cana is really good.

i am a hotel supervisor in canada so you can be certain i will tell the truth. first BEFORE everything i want to tell you..... we were there for hurrican ISAAC ... the hotel gave ABSOLUTLY no information some rooms not all got a letter the night befor to say it was only a tropical storm alert 2 days prior they stoped posting the daily weather and when asked would say did not get it today or ask the concierge wich just happen not to be there for a few hours... always the runaround.
the waves were getting pretty hi and we got the news from a shop owner that was closing up, everybody was pulling the boats in... that it was now a hurrican warning, we keapt updated because i had my laptop, even the some staff would come and ask because even they had no info from the hotel.
how were they going to help if the had no info was a question i was asking myself. we finally got news on a thomas cook paper taped to the desk about the warning and to stay close to the room and hotel even transat did nothing not even update us the last paper was from 3 pm the day befor wow. i will definitly look into travelling with thomas cook nexttime. we were second from the sea and no one even offered to move us or at least to the second floor has they were expecting a lot of rain, they even drained several feet from the pool but never a word. i can understand not wanting to panic clients but to avoid all info is not weise or safe! especially we were 4 adults (all woman exept the little guy)2 teens and 2 children.
nothing was set up in the lobby to keep kids and parents occupied, no games extra entertainement, munchies....nothing to do but wait around. luckely we were not hit and the hurrican passed with little damage. but if it would have hit we were on our own , i spent the night watching the waves in my sisters room on the second floor what a trip.

now for the complex it has several hotel one next to the other so if you like big and cool has in cold , you will be ok but if you rather friendly like most paying customers beware, check other reviews for all the palladiums. only good was the a la carte (except italien, waiter could not seem to get our plates right ended up just leaving and going to buffet) steakh. was excellent.

we travelled to honor my brothers dying wish that his son would swim with daulphines. upon arrival we had 3 rooms and were not together , 1 room smelt so bad we could not use it and the front desk could do nothing till morning because system was down! ya right... so we had to wait till next morning (we sleapt in 2 rooms) manager was so unfriendly and after coming to the room and smelling for himself around noon said he could smell nothing wrong, the place wreaked water damage and a main pipe was leaking in hall of our building 94. he finally accepted to change the room we were willing to paye for an upgrade to a loft beause my mom and younger sister were sleeping with her dauther and my brothers son (7 and 8) they wanted to charge us
40$ a night extra, almost 3 times the advertised internet price, and this after loosing a half day and 1 night.

the first night i do has always pulled up the bed sheets to make certaine no bed bugs, a few jumpt up but they were sand flees, dont worry i know the difference. but even so it was discusting.
i was astonished to find most emploies spoke very little french or english, i have never in all my travelling ever encountered staff that did not have a minimum at least to communicate!

some staff was very nice compared to most not. even the guy making the eggs seemed no to be able to smile. at the bar it took an eternity to be served especially the pool bar the bartender seemed unable to stay at the bar and rather be at the top talking to the other bartender.

the kids pool was great, kids club , well lets just say the only day we broth the kids, they were listening to a movie in spanish and no alternet activity! and it was raining.

my mother was sick for 2 day we all got stomac pains but had broth medication. i asked the front desk for some tea and a soupe because it was between meals imposible to even get her a piece of bread `` we have none`` was the answer only bugers fries and hotdogs...what !!!!wasent this a 4.5 star hotel hmmmmm.

anyway could keep going, just this for the money 1200$ a pers. x6 plus to kids was terrible.
i was at the bahibe last time and was thousand times better. trust me i know what im talking about if you want a bang for your buck choses elswere. BRIGITTE

Room Tip: if you go anyway pay for a loft if you are travelling with kids beforhand

we stayed here in 2010 and it was great. The kids loved the train/trolley that went around the resorts. If you plan on staying here and have really yound kids then dont forget to bring one of those small strollers to browse around the resorts b/c the kids got tired very soon as resort inluding the other ones is huge. The food was great and so was the service. Definitely worth the money spent.

Family of 8 travelled from July 3-12. We all had a great time.
We were in buildings 82 and 91. 2 rooms were oceanfront and 2 were oceanview. The view of ocean was spectacular. We all had loft suites. The rooms were good but the stairs were difficult especially after a night of partying. I used the in room jacuzzi every night before dinner. The room was basic, nothing fancy. Standard mini bar filled everyday. There were menus in room for aromatherapy and upgraded pillows. We never ordered, felt it was overpriced. The maid left towel art everyday. Never a problem with fresh towels or hot water. Turn down service every night.
We mainly stayed at the Palace pool. Enjoyed the swim up bar. Bartender at the upper swim up bar was great. Look for William, he always made sure we were taken care of. No smoking in the pool at swim up bar, had to go to side or upstairs. The kids tried all pools at the resort and said they were all basically the same. The pools needed some tile repair but don't know how that would be done unless they closed the pool down. Saw man scrubbing pool every morning.
We spent majority of day at the beach and after lunch would go to the pool. No big deal finding available chairs. Towel game is in full force. We would just grab empty chairs and drag them together.
During the weekend there was a flood of Dominican families. Pool was so crowded with kids and not much supervision. Kind of felt like kindergarten recess. On Sunday all was back to normal. Nice to see people enjoying themselves and this is a family resort, so I can't really compalin. Just seemed soo overcrowded at the pool for those few days.
Dinners were good. We tried almost all a la cartes. If wait was too long we would try a different restaurant or head to buffet. The steak house and japanese were definitely the longest waiting time.
After dinner we would head over to the lobby bar for cocktails. Look for Milady, she will definitely make sure your drink is never empty. The staff at the bar were a lot of fun. We would sit at the bar and do rounds of shots.
After getting tipsy at the bar we all would head over to the casino. Nice place to spend the night. The guys all enjoyed the $5 blackjack and roulette. About 50 slot machines. No one came home big winners but we all had a good time. Some managed to come home with the same amount of money they left with. They had slot, blackjack, and poker tournaments. They were fun. I won $100 casino credit. They also had some kind of lottery and my sister won $100 cash. We were usually the last ones in there.
After casino, back to lobby bar for a few more drinks or shots and free wi fi. The kids would go to the disco and sports bar. They said it was average. They would stumble in around 4am.
We went to Hemmingway's piano bar one night. It seved top shelf liquor, specialty coffee, fresh fruit smoothies, and dessert. Nice and air conditioned. Kind of quiet in there but a nice spot to wind down.
They do monitor the underage bracelets but found if the older kids tipped they would get served by the male bartenders. Not too much by the women. The bracelets were all different colors. I couldn't seem to figure out the system. The kids were green, we had yellow- I think that was for Apple, and the rest of Palace had purple. I saw gold for Royal Suites and silver-I think for timeshare guests.
We enjoyed the spa. The prices were average, similar to prices in the USA. You could use the facilities for free. The circuit pool was nice. The gym was basic. Again a nice place to wind down and sober up a bit.
Our schedule for 10 days was breakfast, beach, lunch, pool, jacuzzi in room, dinner, lobby, casino, lobby and back to room and repeat x 10. Biggest decision was where to eat dinner.
We didn't try any of the shows. The shows usually remind me of a high school production and are not air conditioned. Maybe if I had small kids I would go but I tend to find them boring. Not the kids but the shows.
This is about my 8th time to the DR. Not my favorite resort but pretty good. The beach is breathtaking. At this resort you choose how active you want to be. Always someone trying to get you involved in an activity. There is always something going on. The resort is huge, 10 days is not enough to explore this property.
Never had a problem with the language barrier. The staff at the resort were great. No problems. You run across some that appear to hate their jobs and have an attitude but you will find that anywhere.
No one had any intestinal issues. All restaurants have someone standing at door dispensing hand sanitizer.
My sister had problems with constipation. She visited doctor on staff and received free medical advice. My brother in law appeared to have broken his toe but would have been $200 to have him treated. He just taped his two toes together and sucked it up. I'm sure all the alcohol helped too.
We met people from all over the world. Fell in love with Canadian trio of women. They were teachers on holiday and they definitely knew how to unwind and have a good time. Just wanted to give a shout to "Chi Chi" and her crew. Met a few from Texas and Ohio. My nephew seemed to latch on to them- sorry.
Our flight home was delayed 6 hours. We stayed at resort for as long as we could to avoid sitting in airport. Still sat in airport for about 4 hours. United offered food vouchers and free water. Duty free shopping was average. You have to know your prices. Coffee and vanilla were cheaper at resort. Some of the liquor was a good deal and you can't go wrong with cigarettes. We managed to come with max allowed for alcohol and cigarettes.
We all had a great time. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this resort. We met may people who have visited this resort 10+ times. That has to say something. If you are picky or don't like kids upgrade to the Royal Suites. If we didn't bring ours I would have upgraded but I guess it's nice that they still like to travel with us. They are all in college or off to college.
Any how, go and enjoy. I think the people that have had a miserable time here didn't do their research and their expectations were too high. The rating system for the hotels in the DR are not the same for ones in the USA. It like comparing apples to oranges.

Room Tip: buildings 82 and 91 were guaranteed at least oceanview. 8216 and 9114 were oceanfront.
