“First Caribbean Trip”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

Our first Caribbean trip to one of the Islands, Dominican Republic, was a success and the Hotel was very good. On arrival we were greeted well from friendly staff and were given a room upgrade to a Superior Junior Suit with full Sea View. Probably the best view available
We had booked a Superior Suit but the only difference appears to be the location of the suit as opposed to any enhancements, however the rooms are very well appointed with water jet bath, good bathroom and Mini Bar and 4 spirit optics. The later being used very infrequently due to the abundance of alcoholic drinks everywhere.
Food options were good with a choice of 4 bookable theme restaurants and a large Buffet style restaurant. The food choice was exceptional with most tastes catered for with as much as you could eat at all meals.
The grounds were extensive with a complex of 5 hotels on the one location 4 of them available for our use during the day, only evening meals were restricted (shame as this would have added to the experience). The beach as all in this area was fantastic.
The local town/village was not worth a visit and appeared very run down. Excursions farther afield were generally good with a reasonable amount of options available.
The main downside for us was the restriction to having to eat in the same complex for the length of our stay as options outside appeared non existent - shame really. For this reason only, I would not return.

Room Tip: Rooms with sea or partial sea views are much better in terms of location some standard rooms have ru...

We stayed here for a week in October 2012 as a late deal.

The hotel overall is spacious, clean and pleasant. There are plenty of friendly staff in the restaurant and the lobby bar alike but the pool bar was a bit hit and miss, as it got a bit rowdy there at times. Towards the end of the holiday, we tipped one of the bar staff there, who’d been good but the following morning he gave us a sob story, basically asking for more money.

Our room was spacious with a decent view and reasonably comfortable double bed. What I didn’t like however, was the feeling that someone kept looking through our things. I must emphasise at this point that nothing got taken but it’s not a great feeling, wondering if things are safe in the room. I did raise my concerns with the rep here and we got the silent phone call in the early morning. Mmm… thankfully we were going home the next day.

The food was well presented in the restaurant and the staff were great. The food was quite good and plenty of choice.

The pool area got a bit busy at times, and there was limited space on the beach under the trees. The beach-front was busy with lots of people walking past, so we struggled to find somewhere for a few days until we found space to settle properly.

We went on the executive jeep safari and had a great day out with a German couple and a guide who could speak articulately to both couples. There are some beautiful places to see but the advice is that you should go with a guide to keep you away from any problems.

Would we go back? Possibly… There’s nothing essentially wrong with this place but we’ve been there and done it…

just spent a amazing 11 days in this hotel with lots of friends , food was great , hotel lovely and spotlessly clean , all the staff who served us were polite too . I would not hesitate to reccomend this hotel it is well worthy of its 5 star status.

Room Tip: we had room 3118 which was quite but had a lovely outlook

Negatives:

- Muggy room
- Mold on the ceilings
- Broken showerhead
- Squeaky fan
- Jammed door
- Broken phone
- Issues took 2 days and 2 requests to resolve
- King bed = 2 full-sized beds pushed together
- Mediocre food
- Japanese restaurant (Geisha) served undercooked wontons and Fettucine noodles rather than Udon.

Positives: Beautiful beach

Just spent almost £4000 for myself, my parter and child to stay at the riu palace bavaro for 2 weeks. We picked this hotel as it was in the Thomson a la carte brochure and looked to be one of the best in the Dominican Republic. Food is nothing special, buffet repetitive with miserable staff. specialty restaurants are shocking really poor quality food, no ambiance in any of the restaurants. Staff look like they don't want to be there, unless you are tipping the, of course! Nothing to do for my son, he is 4 years old the kids club is full of Spanish kids. Staff struggle to even understand basic english, which given the amount of american and canadian holidays makers at the hotel , is not really good enough. Kids pool is tiny, needless to say my son was extremely bored. Also no special childrens menus etc in any restaurants and the staff don't seem to interact with any children there. Beds and pillows the worst I have ever slept in, and walls are like tracing paper, prepare to be woken up early hours of morning by drunk Americans coming home from their night out. Hotel had no atmosphere whatsoever, evening entertainment is terrible. Wouldn't even waste your money going here if you're English to be honest, I wish we had not wasted so much money going here, when we could have went somewhere a lot closer to home for half the price and had a much better time. Will never stay in another Riu hotel again this was my first and last. Also you cannot use 2 out of the hotels 4 swimming pools, as one is for VIP guests and one is for sensimar German guests. This just isn't good enough, and thomson should not be marketing this hotel to uk holidaymakers in my opinion.

Excellent in all aspects, please don't take any notice of the negative reviews. This hotel is spotlessly clean, restaurants offer enough choices for the fussiest eaters. The staff work extremely hard overall a very pleasant stay.

This resort is very nice, the beach is beautiful and the staff is friendly and helpful. There was a slight language barrier as we only speak english but not bad. We choose an Ocean front jacuzzi suite. Rooms are nice but could be cleaned a little better. Forget watching TV the channels were limited and only found Two in english but we didn't come to stay in the room however a little TV at night is nice. Room service is a joke, if you want more than an egg and toast or nachos you are in trouble. There were only 4 or 5 items on the room service list. Food at the restaurants was OK at best but you could get by. We were happy with the resort for the most part but the food was really an issue for us and we are not picky eaters. Beautiful resort and beach with bad food sums up our experience.
