“Beautiful property - Brand New!”
Reviewed December 17, 2011

We stayed one night at The Fishing Lodge. Our stay was mostly a positive experience and we will definately be making a return visit next year!
Check in was easy and we were greeted with a tropical welcome drink!
We encountered a problem with my future reservation but the issue was thankfully quickly resolved!
(thanks Andia for your assistance!)

Our room was very luxurious! There were many wonderful details to the room. Everything was so fresh, new and all wonderful! We could not have ordered a better room. I especially appreciated and loved the wifi in the room and at the pool!

The pool is great. There is an outdoor room and a beautiful pool bar by the main pool area.
The grounds are great, lots of flowers, very clean. There is not a beach on the property but you can use the shuttle to get to a beach if you want.

Although it is a very classy place, The resort is still a work in progress. There is construction still going on there and none of the shops are open yet. We did experience some small problems which were minor but frustrating - such as our dinner bill was messed up and we waited a long time for it to be resolved. then they were not able to make change for payment for our meal ($7 due back to us) nor at checkout (only $2 due back to us and we never did get it!) We also got conflicting answers regarding an option to have all-inclusive. we considered our issues were "growing pains" and hopefully these things will be improved on soon.

We were only there for 24 hours but did enjoy our stay and look forward to a return visit!

My wife and I arrived at Fishing Lodge on November 13th, and after a little language barrier and driving directions, we were able to check in to Fishing Lodge to a very beautiful building, nice people and an amazingly fresh fruit drink.
During our check in and arrival, after a few room issues, which the staff was on top of it, we checked in and was completely amazed by the village, our room, and great view of the marina.
Though the Fishing Lodge was not yet completed, save for a great restaurant in the Bistro, the pool bar, and a bunch of rooms, the resort was incredible.
We had the opportunity to walk around the grounds and see the buildings that were not quite finished yet, but could see what they would be and how amazing that it will look like when completed.
During our stay, we had the attention as if we were celebrities. The staff remembered our names, what we liked, and remembered what we had talked about days before. They catered our every whim, regardless of what time it was during the day.
We ended our trip with an amazing breakfast were we had an executive chef make us breakfast as we sat on our terrace.
Beautiful place, amazing staff, and get wait to get back there next year.
Thanks Fishing Lodge!

We visited the Fishing Lodge, arriving as the first guests on opening day. As a prior review mentions, you are greeted by a staff that will do everything to make your stay the most relaxing you have ever experienced. Marsi and Andia at reception are there to assist with any request you may have about dining, excursions, shopping or the property. We had reserved a premier 1-bedroom junior suite and were upgraded to the 2 bedroom villa with a wonderful marina water view. The outdoor terrace was huge with a dining table and two modern lounge chairs offering sun all afternoon. Even if we hadn’t been upgraded the 1 bedroom suite looked to have many of the same outstanding amenities as the room we received but with fewer bedrooms and baths.

The large living space includes a full kitchen and living room sectional area that is both comfortable and has a high quality of furnishings and design accents with a nautical theme. The bathrooms have rain showers with unusual coral limestone. The walk in closet (with a floor-to-ceiling shoe rack and safe) could support a stay of more than a month and is useful to store all of your luggage until that day when you don’t want to leave. Housekeeping was very attentive, so good that we acknowledged it with a tip and thank you note.

We enjoyed talking with the restaurant management (Hodge), hostess, servers, and the excellent executive chef, Pascal most every day. Pascal came to our room the first day and told us many great things up and coming with this property, Sanctuary and the Ocean Club’s (opening 2012) shared facility and dining venues. We know we will be back to see how it all evolves.

The Bistrot Restaurant has a varied menu and we dined there four of our six nights because it was a delightful surprise to experience fine dining in such a relaxing atmosphere again with a décor that inspires. We’ve honeymooned in Spain and went to Valencia earlier this year so we appreciate the thought that went into the designer’s choice of the spanish tiles and other lighting and accessories that show Mediterranean influence throughout the property. The feeling, colors and architecture in the entire property from main street to the swim out pool suites is a “village” with so much charm. Unique railings and the architectural details make each building look different although each building is interconnected.

The pool and its landscaped grounds are impressive and expansive. We first saw the pool grounds lit up at night with a tour from one of the Salamander property management associates (Eliot) who was one of many greeters at reception for the first check-in they had to the property. If you like the beach, Luis or, if he is busy with other guests, the Cap Cana shuttle will drive you any and every day and we heard there will be a water taxi starting soon that will be a very short trip to the Sanctuary grounds with its beautiful white beach and other amenities of the high regarded sister property that you can enjoy.

We wish this property and its many proud, caring associates much success. There are so many thoughtful and kind people that influenced and made our holiday exceptional. The Fishing Lodge is luxurious and a very special place!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a water view of the marina.

I am a Marriott Platinum Premier & Starwood Platinum with 200+ nights per year.

We visited DR for a friend's wedding which was held at the sister property, Sanctuary. My wife couldn't make it so a friend joined from NYC. We arrived on opening day (11/3/11) as guests #3 & #4. We thought the opening was in early October. The hotel reached out to us several days in advance wanting to coordinate complimentary shuttle service. When learning my friend arrived two hours earlier, they requested they pick him up separately rather than have him wait for my arrival. We were warmly greeted by Louis who turned out to be our own personal transportation for the balance of the trip.

The staff numbered over 100 and were extremely friendly and willing to go above and beyond to ensure our stay was very enjoyable. We were warmly greeted by about 8-10 of them upon arrival. Most of the staff was still preparing the resort for a busier end of November. Construction is still in progress, but let me be clear that you will not notice it at all. The reason is because this is a village and the development is on the other side of the resort area.

The rooms are nicely appointed. We purchased a 730 sq. ft. 1-bedroom plus sofabed. We received a 2-bed, 3-bath with a marina view. Kitchen was fully equipped with granite and high-grade appliances. Cabinets were stocked with plenty of dishes and glasses. The furniture is solid-quality. The bathrooms are almost entirely crafted from stone. The showers have high water pressure. The lighting is great. The master bath has a large soaker, jacuzzi-styule tub. Beds are more firm than I'm use to, but I sleep in a softer bed. Wi-Fi is easily accessible. Cleaning service is prompt and respectful.

If you are part of the yachting world, this is your place. I don't own a yacht. However, models, schematics and looking around makes it clear there will be a lot of big boats tied up in the months to come.

If you like pools, they have great pools. There are plenty of chairs. If you like the beach, they will happily drive you four minutes to the same beach that sits outside the Sanctuary. This is a public beach, but very nice with a restaurant near by. The restaurant will accommodate your need to phone the resort when you would like a pick up.

We personally met the executive chef, Pascal, that services both the Fishing Lodge and Sanctuary. We also met his "lieutenant" chef, Ethel, while at dinner at the Sanctuary. All meals were great. The Fishing Lodge only had the Market (breakfast/lunch) and Bistro (lunch/dinner) open. However, there appears to be about 4-5 more restaurants opening.

Finally, this "village" also has crazy amenities like a church, fitness center that looks like a health club, about 20-30 stores that will be populated soon, and countless other surprises.

As great as the Sanctuary is (we were there a few times), the word on the street is this place will dominate in luxury and experience.

As the previous reviewer noted, this property along with Sanctuary are owned by 3 Spanish butchers (probably own 100's of meat processing plants) and is managed by Salamander which by all accounts, only dabbles in high-end ultra-luxury properties.

Room Tip: Request one of the ground floor rooms on the north side that face the marina and offer up a private...

Recently, I was given the opportunity to receive a tour of the property of Fishing Lodge Cap Cana for an upcoming wedding. At the time the property wasn't operating but has since opened. We were pleasantly impressed with the facilities. I wish them success and look forward to visiting again now that they're operational.

Whilst on a recent 21 night multi-resort [Excellence, Zoetry & Sanctuary Cap Cana] trip to Punta Cana between 27th September - 18th October we took the opportunity to check out the Fishing Lodge on two occasions whilst we were at Sanctuary Cap Cana

This was our 28th trip to the Caribbean and our 10th trip to Dominican Republic. We have stayed in the North of the island twice and this was our 8th trip to the South so we like to think that we have a fairly good well calibrated holiday measuring stick

The resort is totally different to anything we have seen in the Dominican Republic before - it feels more like mainland Spain or one of the more upmarket Spanish islands resorts which is hardly surprising as all the owners are Spanish

The Fishing Lodge is one of a collection of properties in Cap Cana owned by CHI, the other two being Sanctuary and the Ocean Club, the latter being a small waterfront boutique hotel which is still under construction. All three properties in the collection will be managed by Salamander who have a tremendous track record with regards to top flight hotels

I must admit that we had never heard of Salamander until we started to look into having a look at the Fishing Lodge at some point during this trip and did some research. Salamander Hotels & Resorts is a privately owned and operated company based in Middleburg, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. Founded by noted entrepreneur and philanthropist Sheila C. Johnson in 2005, the company owns, manages and develops hotels, resorts and inns that reflect the authenticity and character of their surrounding environment

Overlooking a vast marina, which is absolutely stunning, the Fishing Lodge certainly has that WOW factor.

It has just over 300 apartments all of which have been sold and over 200 of the owners have taken the opportunity to put them back into a rental pool. Salamander are going for a soft opening which has been delayed by a few weeks as they want everything to be perfect – a very interesting and different concept, to me, anyway

It will be run on an EP basis with the option to upgrade to a tiered AI package where you will also be able to include water sports, golf, etc should you wish. Guests who prefer to do some self-catering will be able to do so as each apartment has a fully equipped, modern and well-appointed kitchen. There will be an on-site outlet [Salamander Market] for guests to purchase provisions if they wish to

All the restaurants and bars, etc will be open to non-residents and guests will be able to use the facilities at all three properties in the collection when they are fully open

We were lucky enough to be able to see a cross section of the apartments and some of the restaurants and as you will see from the photos they are all very well thought out and beautifully appointed. They have a very modern feel to them and there is just so much attention to detail both inside the apartments and throughout the property itself. Like Sanctuary the resort has so many different styles of building in different colours and you can see little reminders of Sanctuary in the design and layout. As you will see from the photos you have panoramic views of the marina and the property also has its own little chapel where it is hoped that many weddings will take place

We just loved the fact that many of the apartments and main pool complexes are actually built at first floor level and not street level which is the commercial sector– we cannot wait to go back and stay at this wonderful little “village”. Salamander intend to run shuttles and water taxis between the properties for ease of access which will give you tremendous choice and flexibility – you are only limited by your own imagination

Todd Gray of the renowned Equinox Restaurant in Washington DC is acting as a food consultant to Salamander and has been for a number of months working with Pascal, the Executive Chef at Sanctuary who will oversee the collection of properties, on menus, etc which shows they are very serious about where they wish to position these properties

At the initial opening of the resort, the amenities will include two restaurants, two bars, four pools, a chapel, fitness centre, and boutique shops on Main Street and plaza settings

The scoring I have given the review is based on our two extensive tours of the property and knowing that the food and beverage at the Fishing Lodge will be at least the same, if not better than, Sanctuary where we spent 12 nights of our stay
